On February of 2018 Lucas Hernandez’s fathers live-in girl friend reported him missing. For months Wichitans banned together to try & find him. Only to find out the gf Emily Glass led a PI to Lucas’s body. Lucas’s family never got the answers of what actually happened because Emily Glass took her life rather than answer questions. This was a case where Child Protective Services failed at their job & Lucas was their casualty. We will be covering the case of Lucas Hernandez in next weeks podcast. With the weather and Covid more and more children and staying at home. If a child has not been seen by other family members, friends, or if something doesn’t feel right in a neighbors home say something. Today we are spotlighting CASA advocate, Becky Scott. Becky's service as a CASA in Lynchburg City began in 2020. Becky's Advocate Manager states, "Becky has provided consistency for the child throughout her lengthy case. Her work with the child, family, and case professionals, gives a voice to a little one who is not able to speak for themself." When asked why she thinks having diversity among CASA volunteers is important, Becky stated, "I truly believe it is important that the youth (and parents) we serve see people like themselves, who care and are willing to give of their time to help them navigate and become successful in life. Along with that, understanding cultural differences is a necessity. Having diversity does not only include your pigmentation but also your life challenges and your ability to overcome those challenges. You have the ability to bring those tools to the table throughout your volunteer experience." Becky believes being African American and serving an African American family has given her the ability to oftentimes bond and gain trust sooner than someone of a different ethnicity. She says, "The compassion I show, my ability to understand their issues even though our backgrounds may be different, is rooted in the fact that they see me as if they see themselves. In addition, it has enabled me to be extremely candid with my families, when needed, without the tension this may cause another worker." This quote is so true! As an educator working with elementary school students every year I'd look forward to meeting my new class and every year I'd have at least 1 teacher colleague who would begin telling me about all the horrible kids I was going to be getting. I absolutely would let all they were saying go in one ear and out the other. On the 1st Day of school I could see right away the students who needed some extra attention. I would ALWAYS start the year telling my new class just how much they were going to grow academically and socially. I would tell them that I was sure they knew students who were known as the "bad" kids and that there was no such thing as bad. I would let them know if they were the student in the past sitting away from a group with a desk of their own that would not be the case in our class. This year was a fresh start and it didn't matter who they were led to believe they were in the past -like the troublemaker- that this was going to their year to shine. Children soak up all that adults say even when it's negative unfortunately. When they are surrounded with adults with a growth mindset the sky is the limit! All children have the right to prove what they can do no matter what challenges they are working on and as teachers and parents we are their strongest advocates.
