FILM SCREENING / Q&A | Omen (Augure) by Baloji | We were excited to attend the film screening Omen (Augure) by @Baloji followed by a Q&A on Saturday 27th April 2024 at Curzon cinema in Soho, London. Praised by critics for its nuance and humanism, Baloji’s film traverse subjects of identity, family, witchcraft, spirituality, traumas and love. Drawing from his own experience, Baloji captures the lives and emotions of x4 characters to depict the mirrored trials and tribulations through a complex, serious story of returning to the motherland in search of one’s identity and the multiplicity of European diasporan identities in a Congolese landscape. The need to find oneself and being accepted as an outcast is deeply explored. Alain Nsiona Defise, Head of Emerging Markets-Credit at Pictet Asset Management hosted the Q&A. Baloji is a multi-disciplinary artist, rapper and Film Director. Both are Congolese. Representation matters across industries. We felt very proud on listening to the discussion between both parties. Alain asked the pertinent questions we wanted answers to. Congratulations Baloji for Omen (Augure). Now, to reinforce LWD’s mission to “Cultivate Curiosity” and build on our collaborative cross-community efforts to support projects like this: a story at the heart of 🇬🇼Guinea-Bissau’s liberation. As Amílcar Cabral said, "To liberate our people from fear, we must liberate them from ignorance." (“For me, this project is a more than deserved tribute to a person who had the audacity to make us free from colonialism. Amílcar Cabral is the parent of our nation. This project has a lot in common with our Look Wonder Discover mission for the simple fact that Cabral defends literacy and the development of people's skills so that they can work wherever they want.”) And so, help LWD cultivate curiosity and get involved: Click through the images to learn more, then scan the QR code or find the link in our bio to donate! #BOTD Gaston Kaboré, the legendary Burkinabe historian and filmmaker, turns 73 today. While he is known for his films, including Wend Kuuni and Zan Boko, his contribution to the cinema of Africa transcends his efforts behind the camera. In 2003, Kaboré founded the Imagine Institute in Ouagadougou which, along with training African filmmakers, preserves African cinema history through its Audiovisual Archives Department. We celebrate the legend, and wish him many more years. #africanfilm #burkinafaso
