Friends, I'm thrilled to finally share that last year, I attended journalism school for a master's degree at the age of 51, after I managed to get into a school that's considered by many the best journalism program - and having graduated yesterday, I concur 😊. It was an honor. I have so many insights from this undertaking on several topics - the brutal, soul-crushing agism in a cohort where a majority were about less than half my age, which by the end had broken me so badly that I thought I would not complete; the enriching, challenging pace and subjects; the flawed way we're raising our children so they view disagreement/dissent as a threat to themselves and not as an exercise that could expand their scope; the effects of a war on campus. I'm good at hard stuff, but journalism school is HARD AF. Today, I want to address how difficult it is to get into a program. You have to take tests as part of your application - you can't just apply. While I'm confident of my writing abilities, speed has always been my nemesis, and these tests were timed. To make it a complete disaster, I was in the thick of #menopause when I took the proctored exams lasting hours. The menopause fog/symptoms felt almost deadly because it affected every system in my body. I used to hardly sleep, and my concentration was so poor that I would lose the first part of a sentence and would have to reread while the clock was ticking. With zero confidence & completely overwhelmed, several times I started crying and thought of quitting because I was sure the results would be poor. Probably the monitor, watching me on screen, thought I was weeping because of how hard the test was 🤣. But each time I was about to quit, I remembered my father's advice about finishing challenges, plus I had already paid 😅. So I completed the tests - 100% sure I'd failed. To my shock, both schools I applied to accepted me, both offered scholarships, which not all students get. Even today, I'm humbled by the moment I sat on the FLOOR 😳😆 (?I'm a germophobe) crying, reading the acceptance. Secondly, this conveys a very dangerous message to young people who are looking all over for guidance, for role models, for crucial help in learning to live in this confusing world. Friends, I went to DC today for work, and you can be sure that I shook The Capitol by vigorously flaunting my grays. I can't sleep 😥😭 A #silversister asked me a few months back to share about my dietary habits. So a few things: I was raised by vegetarian parents in India, though that diet today would be considered vegan because it did not involve the practice of factory farming or abuse of any animals. Living in the west as an adult, I occasionally ate fish for some years and also egg whites. However, I have recently become attuned to the suffering of animals in factory farming where extreme horrors and cruelty are perpetrated on innocent living beings while the conditions are termed "humane," so I returned to being a #vegan again. I'm very close to eliminating any and all fish and dairy products. I deeply regret not educating myself about how dairy is produced in factory farming. I sometimes can't fall asleep when I picture that cows are attached to machines for their milk as their babies are slaughtered at birth as byproducts. I'm eternally grateful that my parents raised me as a vegetarian because they considered animals as sentient beings equal in value to humans. You cannot call yourself an animal person if you love your dog/cat/pet but eat other animals after they were kept in cages so tight they could not move. Next month I'll finish the journey I've been on since last year, so really excited. But in a lot of pain because I fell -- the smile is a liar 😆. Why did I fall? Because I was overperforming. Yup, over not under. For almost a week, I got very little sleep because of work related issues, which ended really well. But instead of listening to my body and resting on the day after our biggest event of the year, I started work very first thing in the morning 😁😅 because I was happy and high on adrenaline. Then came the fall because our bodies are smart, and they let us know when it's too much. No surgery needed, it seems, 💚😁. 💪 Now, who said old people aren't ambitious? #reflectionsonaging Clockwise story -- 1995: This national campaign allowed me to be financially independent, but shortly after, I was deathly ill and hospitalized and, as a result, pulled from all the jobs I was booked for. Spent the entirety of my remaining 20s fighting that condition and BEAT IT, but could never live a normal life like having a drink with friends or staying up late, hiding in pain and secrecy. My WORST DECADE as an adult. But people tell you that the 20s are supposed to be your prime? 😭 Not for me. 2001: As a long-term #newyorker this photo leaves me in tears. Never thought that I would outlive the #wtc towers behind me. 😭😭 2007: No matter what type of job I have held, I take great pride in hearing my clients tell me that I'm a true professional. I always show up, on time, no matter what, e.g., very ill in this photo. 2016: A very personal and lonely moment during the third year of my gray hair transion. I was waiting to find out if I had cancer. I did not 🙏🙏. 2021: How hot am I during #perimenopause 😫😳😅, huh? A #tuesdaythrowback from about 20 years ago, anyone? I'm in a #saree or #sari - acceptable either way. What do you feel when you see me in it? Do you feel that I'm alien to you? Strange? From a far-off place that's too unfamiliar to you? Does it create distance between us? I was returning home from the park the other day when a tall, white male in nice casual clothing, holding the hand of a small girl, passed me on the street. He noticed my natural white hair and reacted with his eyes popping and mouth stretched, sneering, shaking his head violently in disapproval, no, DISGUST, at me. It clearly wasn't enough that he didn't like it. He wanted to make sure that I understood what he thought, so he jutted his head into my face, making unblinking eye contact, giving his head a full workout. MEN, THIS IS AGGRESSIVE, DISGUSTING BEHAVIOR THAT MAKES YOU LOOK LIKE PUTRID SEWAGE! We all have our aesthetic preferences, and that's wonderful and fair, but it's utterly dickish to try to impose your choice on anyone else - especially a strange woman on the street - or to offer your unsolicited opinion to anyone in any situation. DEMARCATION LINE A look back at a moment in an airport either in Berlin or Turkey from my FIRST gray transition during 2014-2016 and some thoughts for people in the early, turbulent stages of growing their grays. First, I want to praise & acknowledge the many silver sisters who are rocking their grays with the #grombre look with a stark demarcation line. Some are showing by example that it can look beautiful. 👏👏 Good job! I am personally not a fan of carrying a severe demarcation line that divides two hair colors that are vastly different from each other. It's not my first recommendation for a gray growout because, firstly, it aggravates a process that's already very challenging for most -- by carrying on your head a daily visual reminder of the most extreme version of the two realities, two mindsets, two cultural choices, creating massive conflicts when what you need is gentleness, support and love. Secondly, my issue is with the psychological, mental and conceptual impact this choice produces. You're carrying on your head, heavily, the old hair that has not served for some time and has affected your self-esteem and worth in this world while you're trying to envision and embody something new, something not supported by a majority. It's like trying to fly with your ankles tied to long heavy ropes dragging you to the ground. Why hang on to what you are moving away from? This is why I advise starting with a shaved head, LOL, which I KNOW, and respect, does not work for some. But if not a buzzed head, try getting rid of the old hair ASAP in your journey because there is so much vitality, freshness and power in the new hair that you will feel great after the first jolt of removing the bandaid. A week ago, I turned in my biggest project, something that's taken me well over a decade of work. So I was under the impression that I'd get some free days before my next ambitious journey set to begin in less than a month. I had decided that I was going to call this brief interlude the Silly Season during which I was wishing to blast you with absolutely silly, ridiculous reels 😁🤣, perfectly aided by the heat and humidity of New York summers ☀️. But the rude reality is that I'm supposed to read a lot, listen to podcasts, and watch documentaries as research for work that would be very serious. So no free time before I'll be required to sprint but for the length of a marathon 😳😔. And I'm totally exhausted now. I'm just dismayed to realize that this has been my life for decades. No real leisure time. And always feeling guilty and frightened if I took an actual full day to do nothing. As an immigrant, I have had two or more jobs since I landed in this country, some very high paying, some minimum wage, and heartbreakingly some that people did not pay me for 😭. At least over 30 different types of jobs. Not complaining because I'm thrilled for my next stage of work, which took me years to get to. But how's it that I have very few proper vacations in my whole adult life? Anybody else in this state? As I mentioned before, I have been trying to locate photos from my FIRST gray hair transition, which I completed during 2014-2016. The terrible reality is that I have zero photos for spans of up to 9 months at a time because I was working on my art, staying behind the scenes, and having fun the rest of the time. Never took a photo of my hair, but it was an awesome period. Luckily, I found these pics from 2016 by my friend whom I was visiting in London. The first photo might fool you into thinking that all my hair is gray, but swipe to see the profile, and the back is almost all black. Magic, right? 😅 Well, I hated it. Let me repeat, I absolutely hated this pattern even though I have always liked my white hair, which is why I never covered it in my teens or twenties. The first whites appeared when I was 15. So I still went through the full grayout for about three years because I try to follow through with my commitments. Why did I (and many others) hate this natural pattern when people go to the salon to get something similar, called the "money strip?" The answer is the length of an essay or a book, but I can confirm that I don't hate it now. So what has changed? My perception. The stripping away of the societal gaze from my self. Now that I've finished the paperwork, I can share some good news for me and possibly for some of you. Soon, I'll be starting a journey that I first considered as a teenager and then several times along the decades. And here we are. Some of you know that for over five years, I have been dealing with the most devastating, sudden death in my life. There has not been a single day, I think, when I didn't cry. If I'm truthful, I will have to admit that I lost hope completely, even though on the surface I have been meeting my responsibilities and making professional strides, very functionally -- always feeling like a balloon that was just being taken by the wind wherever -- always feeling that my smiles were inauthentic. This is the first decisive moment and event in the sixth year of #grief that's showing me a teeny feeling of hope and recollection of my old naturally joyous self. I'm marking this as the start of my final inning. As part of this adventure, I'll be doing research and will have access to some of the best tools. One of the items I want to focus on is aging. Aging affects women harshly; aging affects men as well; aging affects people who do not conform to the gender binary; aging affects young people. Both these photos (file photo) are taken on the same day in natural light, the left shot in the morning after waking up and the right in the evening after a full day of work etc. All my life, I have felt demoralized by seeing my own face when I woke up and looked in the mirror as I always look "not good/like a mess" when I start my morning and am extremely accident prone. But the beautiful thing about #aging is that now I try not to judge myself first thing in the morning because I know that our bodies are sensitive, malleable organisms, and they change often and they need to be treated with compassion no matter what. It's a comforting approach; I encourage you to try it. To filter or not to filter: That is the question, which will be answered by each individual user/creator. For the photos that I myself take/produce, I almost never use a filter. The left photo shot by Samsung Galaxy phone is untouched, and the right is edited with a Lansa app filter. Even though used with restraint, the filter erases some signs of #aging and skin texture. Why would I want that? I'm NOT interested in hiding the evidence of my hard-earned years and my experience to appear even a day younger than I am. What is to be gained by projecting such an image? Nothing. As @aging_is_amazing put it eloquently in a recent post, "Filters can add whimsy, fun, joy & humor. They can also cast a more professional image to photos," filters are a tool in our media box. But when this tool is used to create an entire feed and platform that does not show any real photos, a stream that conceals signs of aging in adulation to youth -- we're telling young people that to age is undesirable and to show your skin is not attractive -- and this is the most troubling message that has far and deep repercussions on all of us, which is why I don't use filters. I know at least one country is trying to bring this in, but I'd like to see all images on social media marked with the FILTER they're processed with. Would love to know your thoughts. #reflectionsonaging 2001 VS. 2021: In the left photo from 2001, I am a size 0-2, which I never wanted to be because my entire life I have aspired to be muscly thick and strong. It has never happened for me despite working out and being sporty always -- for various reasons. Slow forward about 20 years, and I'm about 17 pounds heavier in the right photo from late 2021 - thanks to #perimenopause 😁👏. I really do love this weight even though most of my wardrobe acquired over decades doesn't fit me anymore. I consider this change a gift of the #aging process, a dream realized. There are many other advantages of aging, which we can't see if we look ahead with fearful eyes/hearts and dread a natural, inevitable transition because we're conditioned to anticipate an ugly, awful, unwelcome life as an aged person. But what if we look at getting older as another adventure, another stage where a lot of discovery and fun can be had?
