United by Music is the slogan for Eurovision again this year. However, unfortunately we are not. Well the lovely people in these photos very much are united by music. Most are my @eurovisionhub team mates from around the world and viewers who watch our videos on YouTube. I had a brilliant day with them yesterday dancing, roller skating, eating and chatting. I watched the grand final performance last night and there are some of the best songs, artists and performances. However Eurovision this year is not the Eurovision I fell in love with over 40 years ago. It is not the contest that brought together countries for peace and love. It’s a community filled with hurt and anger and division. We’re walking around with police helicopters overhead, snipers on the rooftops and machine guns in hand. Artists are being bullied by fans, and other delegations, and frankly I feel terribly sorry for everyone involved this year. This was our happy place, our escape from reality, our safe, sequinned, fun space but not this year! So if you’re watching the final tonight enjoy but don’t believe everything you see and hear because it isn’t the whole truth! (I had a few messages about the protests that people had seen on the news yesterday however they are not the problem. They are all peaceful 🍉)
Dinner with friends tonight gives me an opportunity to try out more of my new “going out” clothes. This time I’ve chosen a @sassandbide bodysuit with wide-legged pants from @asos Tall. I’m really impressed with the the length of the bodysuit which isn’t even a long fit. There’s plenty of length and I can even fit my thumb through the thumb hole. The pants are a 16Long and I had to take the hem up by 7.5cm because they were way too long. I’m wondering now if I could have got away with a regular fit because they’re also a tad too long in the rise. Anyway, I’ll know for next time. Any other tallgirls tired of having to order 7 things online, then return the ones you don’t like and wait for a refund? I have so much money in refund limbo at the moment. I use PayPal Pay-in-4 to minimise my initial expenditure, but it’s still a lot to have to wait for. Enjoy your weekend, everyone. I’m a bit late to the #ilookmyage party – and thank you to the fabulous midlife ladies here who have asked me to contribute to their posts about this subject (sorry I didn’t get round to it – life!) But here I am – wrinkles and all, sharing my nearly-56 face proudly for the world to see. The #ilookmyage campaign, a collaboration between charity ageing_better and ageismisneverinstyle the activist platform started by Jacynth Bassett at thebiascutboutique has certainly brought out a host of wonderful women who are happy to challenge society stereotypes on ageing. Men are involved too which is great but I personally feel it is more a women’s arena considering the whole gender comparison - ‘he’s a silver fox’ and ‘she’s a grey-haired hag’ attitude expressed in many media stories – sadly, mostly written by women. The campaign rallies against those oft-heard phrases such as – ‘she looks great…for her age’ and aims to empower us to create an age-positive society which embraces diversity in later life. I am all over this, of course – and enjoy watching the likes of and Jennifer Aniston, Halle Berry and Baddie Winkle sashay their fabulousness wherever they go – as much as I enjoy the women I know IRL and here on Instagram, showing up and being wonderfully themselves, creating lives that many women of generations gone by wouldn’t have dared lead, due to society’s warped view that over 45 you’re past it. Whatever you or I look like isn’t the point – it’s how we feel and what we do with the lives we are so lucky to have that is the biggie. And by that, I mean living a life that is true to us and never letting anyone tell us we can’t do something because we are too old. #memademay2024 day 9 and I’m road testing my new gingham frock at Stowe Gardens near Buckingham. As you may have gathered we have spent a few days in the Cotswolds and we dropped by Stowe on our drive home…just check out this amazing shell grotto. This frock started with an old gingham table cloth and a couple of remnants from my stash. This is a shape I’ve made many times but I really like it and they are so comfortable and easy to wear all year round. Great for winter layering or nice and cool in warmer weather. The only shaped pattern pieces are the bodice, the skirt can be made as long or as full as you like. It doesn’t need to have buttons down the front, but I think if you are wearing it over slacks or petticoats a button fastening is nice. The armholes, neck and fronts are all neatened with binding, I generally prefer binding to facings. The aplique and embroidery is to hide red wine stains I didn’t notice till I’d attached the skirt! It’s my 2,000th post today! To celebrate, I thought I’d be as a colourful as can be! These stripey Snags have always been my absolute FAVE pair ever. Seeing as how I’ve got a new pair recently, I thought I’d turn the old pair into footless tights. Normally I machine sew them, but I was reluctant to machine sew this pair - if your stitching is 100% straight all the way round, uneven stitching will look terrible on the stripes. So cut the feet off - only about the first 3 stripes width & I used a plastic Starbucks tumbler inside the leg of the tights. Then folded over the tights 1 inch, and then folded it over once more. When you machine sew on a zig zag, the cuff you create can still stretch. You can’t hand sew a seam that will stretch quite so easily without risking snapping the stitches. So what I’ve done was just sew once stitch every inch around the cuff. It’s worked out really well, so I just thought I’d share the idea! Also, just wanted to give @snagtights a shout out for being fabulous - this pair of tights is easily 5 years old, and I’ve worn them to death, they’ve been washed tons of times - in the last 6 months I put my finger through the front upper thigh area of the tights & it laddered a wee bit, but it hasn’t continued to ladder. Last week I put my finger through them again lower down - they are coming to the end of their life. One of the younger members of my team told me today that I dress “really old school”. When I asked what she meant she pointed out my sheer tights, pencil skirt and heels. Apparently “nobody dresses like that any more”. Apparently I’m nobody, because that’s how I dress; a fact which seemed to escape her notice. After I’d got over the shock of being insulted and negated by a 21-year-old dressed in an ill-fitting skater dress and grimy sneakers, I thought about what she said. I considered my wardrobe habits and whether or not I’m stuck in a rut, wardrobe-wise. Admittedly, this shirt is about 10 years old, but I like it and I think it suits me. I consider my style to be “classic”, but is it actually “dated”? I keep an eye on fashion and will try things I like the look of, but a lot of the time I don’t like what’s in fashion. And another issue is that being tall means a lot of high-street clothes don’t fit me. I felt good when I left for work this morning and now I feel conflicted. Am I classic, or just outdated? I’m going out with some friends tonight to see The Whitlams. Aussies of a similar age to me will probably remember them from the 90s - very political (hence the reference to Whitlam #iykyk) but some really catchy tunes. And it’s proof that they know their audience that they’ve timed their show for 7pm. After the last time I went out dancing with my friends I realised I didn’t have any “going out dancing” clothes, so I got online and made a few purchases. This top is one of them - @meandthee that I purchased through @wolfandbadger. The I’ve seen Wolf & Badger come up in suggested posts and have looked at a few items, but this time I took the plunge and bought something. Me & Thee specialises in draped asymmetric tops and dresses in shimmering, eye-catching fabrics. Perfect for a night out. This asymmetric glittery top was just what I was looking for - not too clingy, no awkward cutouts and comfortable to wear while appropriate for hitting the dancefloor under disco lights. I tried every pair of pants I own with it and decided the skinnies are the way to go. It also looked really good tucked into some high-waisted wide-legged pants. But that look is for another time. It’s a little bit short on one side, but not enough to be a dealbreaker. I’m wearing it with my new tall fit leather jacket, which I’ll tell you about some other time. I wanted to buy a couple of things while I was in Japan. One was some kitchen knives (☑️), the other was a vintage kimono. But when I got to Kyoto and started looking through all the shops, I realised that I was unlikely to ever wear a kimono and the price was too high to spend on something that stayed hidden in my wardrobe. Then one sales assistant suggested I try a haori, which is a traditional jacket worn over a yukata or other clothes. They still have the gorgeous fabrics and traditional sleeves, but are more suited to a Western style of dressing. I looked at dozens, but most of them didn’t suit me because they were too short, finishing just under my backside. And then I unearthed this one, made from a luminous violet silk with contrast red lining. You can wear it open, or tie it closed with these cute little braided ties that stay hidden inside when you’re not using them. Because I don’t want to try and imitate Japanese dress, I’ve worn it with very Western-style jeans, white tee and combat boots. The colours don’t compete and let the beautiful haori shine. I also discovered that it suits me better with a longer sleeve peeking out. The proportions are more modern and flattering on me. Ageing …. What is it we’re afraid of ? 😬 My fear of middle age came from advertising using slogans like ‘Anti-Aging’, ‘Anti-Wrinkle’, and so on, the word ‘Anti’ used over and over again so it reinforced aging was something you had to STOP. And freckles had to be hid, and covered up. But as we know, you simply can’t STOP ageing and freckles are not blemishes. . And then my 50s happened, and now my 60s … and the best pro Aging’ product I’ve found is ‘Gratitude’. ❤️ I don’t want to turn back the clock, STOP time, or hold back years. I don’t strive every day with creams and lotions to FIGHT the signs of ageing. I’m not fighting them, I’m EMBRACING them. I’m not ANTI ageing, I’m PRO ageing !🙌 I’m not going to put my skin, body or mental health through the constant pressure of trying to look younger than I am. I’m NOT afraid of ageing, it’s not a fear I need to face, so I don’t need to worry about it. Here’s how I do feel …. Grateful, FABULOUS!, delighted, proud, happy, strong, energised, motivated, unashamed and completely confident. 👌🙌👏🏻 We need to understand that aging is NOT our enemy, it’s not coming to ruin our looks but to ENHANCE them. Ageing is not a disease, it doesn’t need a cure. Our faces are not broken with the ageing, they don’t need fixing. It’s our attitudes that are broken and the way we fix that is through acceptance and self love. 🙏🏻❤️ So here’s my unfiltered self, my laughter lines and freckles, my 62 year old face that has expressed every emotion under the sun. Desde hace 2 semanas estoy saliendo con un hombre más joven* y estoy en un ride de salud y nutrición, más ahora que ya son 47. I’m a bit late to the #ilookmyage party – and thank you to the fabulous midlife ladies here who have asked me to contribute to their posts about this subject (sorry I didn’t get round to it – life!) But here I am – wrinkles and all, sharing my nearly-56 face proudly for the world to see. The #ilookmyage campaign, a collaboration between charity ageing_better and ageismisneverinstyle the activist platform started by Jacynth Bassett at thebiascutboutique has certainly brought out a host of wonderful women who are happy to challenge society stereotypes on ageing. Men are involved too which is great but I personally feel it is more a women’s arena considering the whole gender comparison - ‘he’s a silver fox’ and ‘she’s a grey-haired hag’ attitude expressed in many media stories – sadly, mostly written by women. The campaign rallies against those oft-heard phrases such as – ‘she looks great…for her age’ and aims to empower us to create an age-positive society which embraces diversity in later life. I am all over this, of course – and enjoy watching the likes of and Jennifer Aniston, Halle Berry and Baddie Winkle sashay their fabulousness wherever they go – as much as I enjoy the women I know IRL and here on Instagram, showing up and being wonderfully themselves, creating lives that many women of generations gone by wouldn’t have dared lead, due to society’s warped view that over 45 you’re past it. Whatever you or I look like isn’t the point – it’s how we feel and what we do with the lives we are so lucky to have that is the biggie. And by that, I mean living a life that is true to us and never letting anyone tell us we can’t do something because we are too old. One thing I like about posting my outfits on Instagram is that it acts as a log or diary, if you will, of all the outfits I’ve worn over time. I can look back through my posts and see that I last wore this exact same outfit on 23rd October 2023. I can also see that I wore this blouse with different pants back in January. I can also read what I said about the clothes I’m wearing. I nearly always mention that I bought this top at Zara in Sydney in 2011. I remember I tried the maximum 10 items you were allowed into the change room and this was the only item that fit me. My daughter also had a huge tantrum about a jacket she did and didn’t want to wear. So, here is my outfit for posterity. In March/April I was… Feeling - super anxious! It’s been a horrible few weeks again of irrational, heightened anxiety and a constant knot in my stomach. It’s a bit calmer this week but I know it’s still lurking, I just keep having a word! As a result, some of this month’s activities were necessary to amuse or calm… Watching - The Completely Made Up Adventures of Dick Turpin on Apple. If you love some silly, but clever humour then this is for you. It’s just bonkers. The New Look on Apple. This is an interesting and calming programme to watch. Although it turns out that Coco Chanel was not that nice. The French accents were poor but tolerable. Reading - The Book of Beginnings by Sally Page which was heartwarming and Confessions of a Forty Something F**k Up by Alexandra Potter which was entertaining. Travelling to Amsterdam with Grace for the first time to watch The 1975 concert and a last minute, work trip to Dubai with the husband so that we could spend some much needed time together. Meeting some Instamates in London and some of the couples that I’m marrying this year. Each pair is so very different and so are their ceremonies but the one thing they all have in common is that they’ve all chosen joyful wedding ceremonies. @katieislescelebrant Going to my first Bongo’s Bingo! A night out of singing, dancing and bingo on a Saturday afternoon. It was bloody brilliant and I was home by 6pm! Scroll to see! Recently I saw my ob/gyn with a laundry list of my menopause concerns. I was so disappointed when she just blew me off and sent me home with “dealing with midlife” pamphlets. Is it any wonder that we turn to all sorts of advice from the internet? Miracle supplements and ointments, there’s a lot to wade through. I’ve come across some really fantastic Drs that are focused on menopause. And some aren’t even selling anything! 😆 I’m resigned that this is where I’ll get guidance from now on. In case you were wondering, yes you can wear a #MillerWaistcoat over a #CawleyBlouse ...and match the waistcoat to your woolly #bobpants . A few more details on the Cawley. I made a size 10 for that neater fit on the shoulders. I left out the welt pockets , figuring I wouldn't be putting anything in them. My placket wasn't entirely successful ..but on this busy fabric it will suffice. I added the loop underneath the placket..I shall make a matching tie to wear with it . I have since made a matching hair tie from scraps. Too much matchy matchy? Swipe to see the gathers at the front shoulders... the unique feature of this blouse. La vida me mantiene super ocupada pero contenta: trabajo, tejido, familia, cocina. Estamos sin carro hace rato, entonces salgo menos que antes. Me hace falta ir al gym más seguido. Pero ayer salí a caminar con C y aproveché para ponerme algo que me hiciera gracia: la suéter "nueva" (de segunda) que uno creería que no va con nada pero va con todo, las Adidas divinas que me regaló mi suegra para Navidad, los jeans de siempre. Cada vez me siento más cómoda combinando estampados, y ya no me asusta parecer una "caja fuerte". ¡Más bien al contrario! No es fácil envejecer con gracia. Hay que adaptarse a la nueva cara, nueva piel, la aparición de nuevos surcos… Hay que dejar ir la juventud sin mortificarla con una edad que no te pertenece. Es necesario hacer la paz con el aliento más corto, con la lentitud después de los excesos, con las arrugas, con las arterias, con los cabellos blancos que de repente toman el lugar de los grillos en la cabeza... Hay que hacerse nuevos y amarse en una nueva era, reinventarse, seguir siendo curiosos, reír y cepillándose los dientes para hacerlos brillar como minúsculas cargas de pólvora. Hay que cultivar la ironía, acordarse de equivocar el camino, elegir con cuidado a otros humanos, alejarse de sí misma, volver, cantar, estar desnudos con orgullo. Envejecer como si fuese vino perfumado y hacer disfrutar el paladar, sin que uno se acostumbre a los bostezos. Hay que caminar recto, saber llevar las cadenas, hablar en otras lenguas, detestarse con moderación. I’m taking a break from my break because my new “Amanda” tops have arrived from @miss_g_and_me and I wanted to show them to everyone. As usual, a lot of effort has gone into Amanda’s design to make sure she’s the perfect fit for us taller ladies. Longer in the body and sleeves, of course, but the neckline and shaping have also been considered. They’re made from a gorgeous textured knit that will elevate a casual look to something special. She’s available in 6 colours - I also bought the light blue, which I’ll show you soon. I’m wearing a 14 and it’s a nice relaxed fit because, quite frankly, I don’t want anything tight around my middle anymore. By the way, I’ve met the real Amanda and she’s lovely. Age positivity + signed book giveaway! 🌸 Although my posts twist and turn, I’m still most passionate about my pro ageing message. Those of you who were paying attention last year…and have excellent memories… may remember me talking about @annagmurphy’s book Destination Fabulous. It’s pretty much everything that I think about ageing but expressed in the most articulate way and with the authority that I don’t have. Well, said book is now available in paperback and if you are looking to adopt a more positive attitude to getting older, and focus on the great things it can bring, then you need a copy in your life! I embarassingly fangirled when I met Anna this week but I can deal with that, she is one of my role models! When asked what she would advise to combat all the negative, ageist messaging that we are bombarded with she suggested surrounding yourself with pro agers and I second that. I don’t always love Instagram but it has enabled me to find my pro age tribe that really does help me shape a more positive attitude. I’m reading a book @mariannewilliamson wrote when she turned fifty called The Age of Miracles and she is spot on. There are so many golden nuggets but I’ll choose one to share: “Something has ended, it’s true, but something new has also begun.
