ON VIEW AT THE PHOTOGRAPHY SHOW: Albert Watson’s Golden Boy, New York City, 1990 Albert Watson’s unmistakable visual style bears the imprint of his background in graphic design and film, evident in the distinctiveness of his images and their narrative quality. When asked about the origins of his ideas, Albert emphasizes the importance of constant mental exercise and perpetual quest for inspiration. During one such occasion, Albert found himself photographing an ad campaign for The Gap. Enthralled by the beauty of a five-year-old model, he sought permission from the child’s mother to extend the session beyond the scheduled hours. A creative concept was germinating in his mind. For the “Golden Boy” concept, Albert envisioned imbuing the child with a metallic hue reminiscent of a bronze statue. He achieved this effect by applying a bronze spray, which not only tinted the skin but also transformed the boy’s dark hair into a blond hue. Captured with an 8×10 camera using a standard lens, the resulting image exudes a surreal quality, with the subject positioned mere feet away. Albert strategically manipulated light to shape the image according to his distinctive style, enhancing contrasts to accentuate the texture of the boy’s hair and the contours of his face. Despite its apparent simplicity, the image possesses a multi-dimensional allure, inviting contemplation akin to viewing a statue, especially when drawn to the boy’s direct gaze. Albert Watson’s portfolio spans a diverse range of subjects, from celebrity portraits to ad campaigns and landscapes. Behind the photo: Mike Tyson’s neck photographed by Albert Watson @albertwatsonphotography (1986). Albert Watson was commissioned to photograph the then 20-year old Mike Tyson for Rolling Stone just before the whole world got to know the boxer. ‘’Tyson was up and coming in 1986,’’ Watson said. ‘’Everybody was saying that he was going to be the next big thing and had always wanted to do a silhouette of a boxer or the back of a boxer’s head. My father was a professional boxer and he used to say, ‘the strength of a boxer is in his neck’. That adage always stuck with me through life.’’ This powerful image of Tyson’s neck symbolises the anonymity of a fighter right before he rose to fame. Months after the photoshoot with Albert Watson during a training session, Tyson made history by becoming the youngest-ever world heavyweight boxing champion at only 20. That year, the young boxer had one of the most dominant years in boxing history, winning 13 fights and 11 of those by knock-out. But that year was also challenging as Mike Tyson was dealing with grief. His trainer and guardian, Cus D’Amato, passed away at the end of 1985 and never got to witness his protégé become a world champion. Cus D’Amato’s intense training routines, which included the infamous neck bridges, developed Mike Tyson to the point where he was sparring with grown heavyweight boxers when he was still a teenager. Although D’Amato never got to see Tyson reach the world stage, Iron Mike has proven to the world that his trainer was right about the belief he had in him. Like Albert Watson described, the strength of a boxer is in his neck. The classic photograph confirms this statement 🥊🎞️

☆ 5年前の本日（2019年4月12日）「KYOTOGRAPHIE 京都国際写真祭2019」がスタートアルバート・ワトソン氏による、アルバム『BEAUTY』撮影時の秘蔵カットが初公開されましたワトソン氏によると、彼はカバー・ジャケットの裏面に採用されたカットを表面に推していたとのこと画像は会場に「参上」した時の教授ワトソン氏【被写体としての教授】サカモトは神秘的な被写体だった。演奏家、作曲家として彼が天才であるのはもちろんだが、カメラも前ではとても自然体だった。私は彼に最低限のディレクションをするだけで、彼がそのほかのこと―頭を後ろに反らせたり、目を閉じたり、色々なポーズ―をしてくれた。彼を撮影できて光栄だった。 Sakamoto was a magical person to photograph. He is a genius with music, and as a performer and composer, of course, but he was also a natural in front of the camera. I only had to give him very minimal direction and he did the rest, throwing his head back, closing his eyes, and coming up with the other poses.
