Apart from being one of the commonly seen beetle, I never had a good opportunity to attempt a stack or even to get good single frame of this beautiful guy named "Blister Beetle". One aspect of this is, they keep moving and won't stand and pose mostly. Another thing is, I am bit scared of them, as their name suggests, they secrete a chemical, which when comes in contact with the skin, they cause blisters. So I always tend to maintain distance with them. This particular frame was made back in 2021, on my backyard. . . Many tiny hairs on the body surface give the impression of a velvety texture. There are large light-colored fields on the head and on the elytra. It lives in beech forests, in sunny places of fallen trees on which fungi grow (e.g. 𝘋𝘢𝘭𝘥𝘪𝘯𝘪𝘢 𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘤𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘳𝘪𝘤𝘢 and 𝘒𝘳𝘦𝘵𝘻𝘴𝘤𝘩𝘮𝘢𝘳𝘪𝘢 𝘥𝘦𝘶𝘴𝘵𝘢). The larvae feed on dead wood and fungi. When it is in danger, it turns on its back and plays dead for a while. It lives throughout Europe, northwest Africa, the Middle East and as far east as western Siberia. This specimen was found on Mt. Avala, near Belgrade, Serbia, on March 23, 2024. 🇷🇸 Telo ovog surlaša je dorzo-ventralno pljosnato, crno, dugo 8–15 mm. Mnoštvo dlačica na površini tela stvara utisak baršunaste teksture. Na glavi i pokrilcima nalaze se krupnija polja svetlijih nijansi. Živi u bukovim šumama, na osunčanim mestima oborenih stabala na kojima rastu gljive (npr. 𝘋𝘢𝘭𝘥𝘪𝘯𝘪𝘢 𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘤𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘳𝘪𝘤𝘢 i 𝘒𝘳𝘦𝘵𝘻𝘴𝘤𝘩𝘮𝘢𝘳𝘪𝘢 𝘥𝘦𝘶𝘴𝘵𝘢). Larve se hrane mrtvim drvetom i gljivama. Kada je u opasnosti, okreće se na leđa i neko vreme se pravi mrtav. Živi širom Evrope, severozapadne Afrike, Bliskog istoka, pa sve do zapadnog Sibira na istok. Ova jedinka je pronađena na Avali, 23. marta 2024. godine.

It is blind and depigmented, and belongs to the troglobitic animals (obligate terrestrial cave dwellers). Its elongated, cylindrical body can reach a length of about two centimeters. It feeds on organic material of plant origin and is an important decomposer in underground ecosystems. It was chosen for the cover photo of the latest volume of the journal Diversity. This specimen was found in Resava Cave, Eastern Serbia, on November 11, 2022. 🇷🇸 Ova vrsta stonoge je endemična za Resavsku pećinu i jamu Vrtačelje u istočnoj Srbiji. Slepa je i depigmentisana, pa spada u troglobiontne životinje (pravi kopneni pećinski stanovnici). Njeno izduženo, cilindrično telo može dostići dužinu oko dva centimetara. Hrani se raspadajućom organskom materijom biljnog porekla i važan je razlagač u podzemnim ekosistemima. Izabrana je za naslovnu fotografiju najnovije sveske časopisa Diversity. Jedinka je pronađena u Resavskoj pećini, 11. novembra 2022. godine.

A beautiful Huntsman in yellow, I came across last year. I usually find the green ones in my backyard, but this guy turned up yellow and it was amazing to witness in close. One of my favorite! 😇 This incredible spider is a "Twig mimicking Orb Weaver (Poltys sp.)". They are amazing camoflauge masters, they mimic the twigs, broken ends of branches, during the day time and they spin the web and catch preys during night. I was looking for this for a long time & fortunately found one in my backyard itself, last year. After that I found a few in Amboli and in Chennai too. Fortunately, I was somehow able to immortalize it in this photo (caught in a defensive posture). This species of giant Asian mantis differs from the European praying mantis (𝘔. 𝘳𝘦𝘭𝘪𝘨𝘪𝘰𝘴𝘢) in its larger body size (males up to 6 cm and females up to 8.5 cm). The most striking feature is the presence of a white spot on the forewings. The entire body is green, cream or shades of brown. This arboreal species is allochthonous in Europe and has already spread to many countries. This specimen was found in Belgrade, Serbia on November 17, 2023. 🇷🇸 Oštećenja na očima ukazuju na nekrozu tkiva i skoru smrt jedinke pre nadolazeće zime. Na sreću, nekako sam uspeo da je ovekovečim na ovoj fotografiji (u defanzivnoj poziciji). Ova vrsta džinovske azijske bogomoljke razlikuje se od evropske (𝘔. 𝘳𝘦𝘭𝘪𝘨𝘪𝘰𝘴𝘢) po krupnijem telu (mužjaci do 6 cm i ženke do 8,5 cm). Najupečatljivija karakteristika je prisustvo bele tačke na prednjim krilima. Celo telo je zeleno, krem ili nijansi smeđe. Ova arborealna vrsta je alohtona u Evropi i već se proširila u mnoge države. Ovaj primerak je pronađen u Beogradu, 17. novembra 2023. godine.

Striking blues For #SalticidSunday! This is the newly described Jumping Spider belonging Stanaelurillus genus. This is "Sky Jumping Spider (Stanaelurillus judithbleisterae)". When I saw the scientific paper of this beauty, I realised this is from Coimbatore and I need to find him. So one day, me and dear friend @natureshutter360 went on to find him and to our surprise, we found him just like that. It was immensely satisfying experience, to find him and photograph. He was soo tiny and it was difficult to get a good frame as his face is black and couldn't lock the focus on the eyes. Fortunately did some stacks and those came out ok, not great, but ok ones. Keeping Photography aside, just deciding to find him the previous week and deciding to go and finding him on the next week itself was soo fulfilling and joyous experience. . . Larva de macaon (papilio machaon) 5mm ,tenía ganas de encontrarme con estas larvas iré haciendo un seguimiento y viendo el proceso si no se va de esta mata de hinojo . La oruga del macaón es muy llamativa por su colorido, en verde-amarillo, con rayas negras y punteaduras en naranja sobre rayas negras y, si se le irrita, puede hacer salir de la parte dorsal anterior, justo detrás de su cabeza, un órgano de defensa glandular de color naranja o rojo en forma de horquilla bífida llamado osmeterio. They are generally divided into two categories based on their adult emergence pattern. Annual cicadas (remain underground as nymphs for 2-3 years) and periodical cicadas (also have multi-year life cycles but emerge in synchrony). The best known periodical cicadas emerge as adults every 13 or 17 years. In a rare occurrence, a trillion cicadas from two different broods are expected to emerge in the Midwest and Southeastern United States in late April. This is the first time since 1803 that Brood XIX (the Great Southern Brood) and Brood XIII (the Northern Illinois Brood) will appear together, an event known as a double emergence. This will not happen again for another 221 years, until 2245. This nymph (a species of 𝘊𝘪𝘤𝘢𝘥𝘦𝘵𝘵𝘢 Kolenati, 1857) was found in the soil near the city of Valjevo, western Serbia, on May 28, 2023. 🇷🇸 Prave cikade čine dve porodice, koje broje više od 3.200 vrsta širom sveta. A commoner from 2020! This is again a female "Jumping Spider" belonging to "Plexippus" genus. They are very commonly seen around house premises and other man made structures. Very cooperative and you can start practicing macro photography/focus stacking or test your diy diffuser with them. These frames were taken during one such diy diffuser testing event. Its distribution includes almost the entire Palaearctic region where it is associated with various deciduous trees (manly unders bark of poplars) and occasionally found under pine bark. Adults are associated with fallen timber, both branches and logs lying on the ground. They have the ability to fly. Both adults and larvae are predatory. The body is completely black, matt, leathery textured and 33-40 mm long. A slight relief can be seen on the elytra. It feeds predatorily on the larvae of various insects, earthworms, molluscs, etc. It is mainly active at night. It is found in lighter forests and open areas and is very common in gardens and yards, making it ubiquitous in many urban areas. The secretion of the defense (pygidial) glands, which is released by spraying when threatened, can cause mild local irritation of the skin and eyes in humans. This specimen was found near the town of Gornji Milanovac, central Serbia, on April 14, 2023. 🇷🇸 Ova vrsta je jedan od krupnijih i češćih predstavnika trčuljaka koji žive u Evropi (isključujući Veliku Britaniju i Pirinejsko poluostrvo). Telo je potpuno crno, mat, kožaste teksture i dugo 33-40 mm. Na pokrilcima se može uočiti blaga reljefnost. Predatorski se hrani larvama raznih insekata, kišnih glista, mekušaca itd. Uglavnom je aktivan noću. Naseljava svetlije šume i otvorene površine, a prisutan je i u baštama i dvorištima, što ga čini čestim u mnogim urbanim sredinama. Beautiful coloration and patterns on them and with big eyes & mandible, it's evident that these guys can't be ignored. This specific individual on particular, was found and photographed at Pollachi outskirts, back in August 2021. I clearly remember, taking this shot and few other good frames from that outing and rushing home to show them to my brother. 𝘉𝘭𝘦𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘴𝘢 𝘮𝘶𝘭𝘵𝘪𝘱𝘶𝘯𝘤𝘵𝘢𝘵𝘢 (Linnaeus, 1758) Family: Carabidae Photo: ©Nikola Vesović 🇬🇧 Large (10-14 mm) bronze-colored ground beetle with greenish margins on the elytra and pronotum. The elytra show distinct depressions and punctures as well as slight green reflections. The beetle is widespread in seasonally flooded swamps, riverbanks and lakeshores with lush vegetation that are regularly flooded. It is amphibious and can hunt under water. It is a circumpolar, boreal species that occurs in northern and central Europe as far as Siberia and northern North America. One of the first carabids to emerge in spring, patrolling the flooded edges of bodies of water. This specimen was found in Obedska bara, northern Serbia, on May 3, 2022. 🇷🇸 Ovaj trčuljak bronzane boje sa zelenkastim ivicama na pokrilcima i pronotumu dostiže dužinu tela od 10 do 14 mm. Po pokrilcima se nalaze izražena udubljenja, kao i blag zeleni odsjaj. Široko je rasprostranjena vrsta trčuljka u sezonski plavljenim močvarama, obalama (reka i jezera) sa bujnom vegetacijom koje su redovno plavljene. Može da lovi čak i pod vodom. U pitanju je cirkumpolarna, borealna vrsta koja se javlja u severnoj i centralnoj Evropi, ali i u Sibiru i severu Severne Amerike. Jedan je od prvih trčuljaka koji se javlja u proleće, patrolirajući ivicama vodenih površina. Ovaj primerak je pronađen na Obedskoj bari, 3. maja 2022. godine.

Back to insects, found this beautiful mating pair of beetles, during my macro walk at Agumbe, Karnataka. This was back from June last year. It was a very short visit of just 2 days and we encountered tons of Insects. I wanted to test the single shot capabilities of my OM-1 and so decided not to stack these beetles. But to my surprise, even a single shot at f8 gave soo much of details that it looked like a stack. Olympus is really a boon to macro photographers. 😊 . . The beetles reach a body length of 12 to 16 mm and have a very shiny, black cylindrical body. The elytra and thorax have distinct rows of pits. The males have a well-developed horn on the head, which is much smaller in the females. The larvae feed on rotting wood of various deciduous trees (oak, beech, birch, alder, hornbeam, aspen, willow, lime, maple), while the adults feed on tree sap. The beetle prefers mature deciduous forests at higher altitudes, but can also be found in old willow stands. It is rare and endangered in many countries. This pair was found on Mt. Vardenik in southeastern Serbia, on June 4, 2022. 🇷🇸 Ovaj tvrdokrilac je nativan u Evropi i zapadnom Sibiru. Odrasle jedinke dostižu dužinu od 12 do 16 mm i imaju veoma sjajno, crno cilindrično telo. Pokrilca i grudni region imaju izražene nizove jamica. Mužjaci poseduju dobro razvijen rog na glavi, koji je kod ženki znatno manji. Larve se hrane trulim drvetom raznih lišćara (hrast, bukva, breza, jova, grab, jasika, vrba, lipa, javor), dok se odrasle jedinke hrane sokom iz drveća. Vrsta preferira stare listopadne šume na većim nadmorskim visinama, ali se može naći i u starim sastojinama vrba. U mnogim državama je retka i ugrožena. Ovaj par je pronađen na planini Vardenik, 4. juna 2022. godine.

The body reaches a length of 17–32 mm. The basic color of the dorsal side of the body is copper, bronze, sometimes greenish or brown. Rows of elongated tubercles can be seen on the elytra. The first antennomeres and femora can be red or black, depending on the subspecies. It is a nocturnal predator that prefers a wide range of conditions, so it can be found in both drier and wetter habitats throughout the season. The elytra are notched at the tip, which clearly distinguishes this species from the similar 𝘊. 𝘶𝘭𝘳𝘪𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘪. This specimen was found near the town of Gornji Milanovac, central Serbia, on July 27, 2022. 🇷🇸 Vrsta trčuljka (sa mnogo poznatih podvrsta) široko rasprostranjena u Evropi i Sibiru (uneta i u Severnu Ameriku). Telo dostiže dužinu 17-32 mm. Osnovna boja leđne strane tela je bakarna, bronzana, ponekad zelenkasta ili smeđa. Na pokrilcima se mogu uočiti nizovi izduženih izbočina. Boja prvih antenomera i femura može biti ili crvena ili crna, u zavinosti od podvrste. U pitanju je noćni predator koji preferira širok spektar uslova, pa se može naći i na suvljim i na vlažnijim staništima tokom cele sezone. Pokrilca su usečena pri vrhu, što ovu vrstu jasno odvaja od slične 𝘊. 𝘶𝘭𝘳𝘪𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘪. Ovaj primerak je pronađen u blizini Gornjeg Milanovca, 27. jula 2022. godine.
It’s World Frog Day - a yearly reminder to celebrate and protect the clumsiest that nature has to offer! Here I present to you my most recent Anuran lifer from Singapore - the Lim’s Black Spotted Sticky Frog (𝘒𝘢𝘭𝘰𝘱𝘩𝘳𝘺𝘯𝘶𝘴 𝘭𝘪𝘮𝘣𝘰𝘰𝘭𝘪𝘢𝘵𝘪). Restricted to patches of primary rainforests in Singapore and nocturnal in its habits, this species proved particularly challenging to find as they are not commonly seen in the areas that are accessible at night. However, the recent wet weather provided the right conditions for me to make the trip down in the early hours of the morning to search for this frog, and with the help of my friends @dipterocarp_legend and @gabriellepff, I managed to see several individuals in a little over an hour of searching! Named after the famous Malaysian zoologist, Dr Lim Boo Liat, this frog primarily dwells on leaf litter and spawns its tadpoles into the cups of 𝘕𝘦𝘱𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘴 𝘢𝘮𝘱𝘶𝘭𝘭𝘢𝘳𝘪𝘢 pitcher plants! This widespread Eurasian species has a green body with two characteristic round light spots on the rear half of the elytra. It is a distinct predator (which is why these beetles are called tiger beetles) that hunts during the day, usually in places with dry soil, e.g. along sandy roads or open forest paths. They use their ability to fly to escape from predators. Adults can run at a speed of up to 0.6 m/s. The predatory larvae live in self-dug burrows in the same habitat. This male specimen was found in Belgrade, Serbia, on March 27, 2023. 🇷🇸 Odrasle jedinke zelene bube peščarke dostižu dužinu od 10 do 15 mm. Ova rasprostranjena evroazijska vrsta ima zeleno telo sa dve karakteristične okrugle svetle mrlje na zadnjoj polovini pokrilaca. Izrazit je predator (zbog čega se ovi insekti nazivaju i tigar bube) koji lovi danju, obično na mestima sa suvim zemljištem, npr. duž peščanih puteva ili otvorenih šumskih staza. Koriste sposobnost letenja da pobegnu od predatora. Odrasle jedinke mogu trčati brzinom do 0,6 m/s. Predatorske larve žive na istom staništu, u rupama u zemlji koje same iskopaju. Ovaj mužjak je pronađen u Beogradu, 27. marta 2023. godine.
A cute little green beauty on the post today. This is a "Walking Stick" or most commonly known as "Stick Insect". It's very evident that why they are named as stick insects as they are amazing, I mean literally amazing camoflauge masters of stick. Be it green or dried brown stick, they mimic soo good, that it's very tough to spot one if they are new to this. Soo photogenic, at the same time, they give alien vibes as you see the front mouth parts are quite wierd to watch. They are harmless and amazing creatures to witness closely. 😊 . . GHOSTKEEPER ☠️ The assassin bug nymph keeps carcasses of ants/insects she's "conquered", to aid camouflage. This disguise is a form of defense against predators, and a possible advantage in offense against preys. Photography wise, this was almost smooth. Found this beautiful "Horse Fly" sitting on my friend's shirt & trying to get through the fabrics and reach the skin. It was during my visit to Agumbe, back in June last year. After the morning macro walk, we returned to the room & I saw this fly trying hard to find the gaps between the cloth. As I had the camera on hands, I went for couple of quick shots and it made him flew away, glad I got one good frame with good amount of focus in it. Have a great week ahead! 😀 . . The elytra are blue, with different black patterns. The antennae are long, also two-colored, black-blue, with dense hairs. The legs are blue, as well as the pronotum, on the sides of which there is a thorn. Larvae develop in various types of deciduous trees, primarily beech, while adults often sit on the bark of sun-exposed trees and feed on pollen. They occur in the period from May to September. It is a strictly protected species in Serbia (it's included in the EU Habitats Directive as well), and can not be confused with any other species. This specimens was found near the town of Gornji Milanovac on July 27, 2022. 🇷🇸 Alpska strižibuba je jedna od najatraktivnijih i lako prepoznatljivih vrsta, sa dužinom tela od skoro 4 cm. Pokrilca su plava, sa raznolikim crnim šarama. Antene su dugačke, takođe dvobojne, crno-plave, sa gustim dlačicama. Noge su plave, kao i vratni štit, na čijim stranama se nalazi trn. Larve se razvijaju u raznim vrstama listopadnog drveća, pre svega u bukvi, dok odrasle jedinke borave na kori osunčanih stabala, a hrane se polenom. Javljaju se u periodu od maja do septembra. U Srbiji je strogo zaštićena vrsta (a nalazi se i na EU Direktivi o staništima) i ne može se pomešati sa drugim vrstama. Ovaj primerak je pronađen u blizini Gornjeg Milanovca 27. jula 2022. godine.

Meet Jin Jin is a Golden Head Rutilia Fly (Rutilia argentifera). Golden Head Rutilia Fly is nectar feeder and assist the flower plants for pollination. Adults are usually found resting on the sunny side of tree trunk. Adults feed on flowers, notably Eucalyptus. Females rest on ground when larvipositing. Being a fan of focus stacked images, it's very rare for me to get a good single shot. But I love single shots too. I love the depth of field and the effect it creates on the viewer's mind. Here on the frame, it's a "Oriental Fruit fly" looking at me curiously. It's obviously a single shot and the fact that the focus is right on its eyes and eveything else is blurred creates a beautiful effect in the image. Hope, everyone sees single shots like me and like this frame too. ☺️ . . Meet Finn Finn is a Cylindrical Bark Beetle (Subfamily Colydiinae). This is definitely an interesting looking beetle. I’ve never seen one with such a textured body. Happy "World Wildlife Day!" On this auspicious day, I want to share this beautiful species of "Cicada" I came across, during my trip to Amboli, last year. This was at a very comfortable height and so it became easy for stacking. Usually they will be sitting very high on the barks of the tree, but I have encountered few individuals at eye level height too. They are familiar for producing unique high pitched sound, which is usually the male species call for the females during the mating season. I have done few more stacks & pretty excited about how they will turn up. 😊 . . Not often do you come across a scene as macabre like this one. What we have here is a female “Tarantula Wasp” or Spider Wasp dragging a paralysed Tarantula to its nest. For food one may ask? Unfortunately for the Tarantula, it’s going to get much worse. The female wasp has paralysed the Tarantula with a well aimed sting between its legs, and is in the process of dragging the unfortunate spider to a specially prepared nest. There it will lay a single egg on the Tarantulas abdomen. When the larva hatches, it creates a hole in the Tarantula’s abdomen, enters and feeds, but avoids the vital organ, thus keeping the spider alive as long as possible. Nature can be cruel, but this one takes the cake. Singapore’s biodiversity is amazing! Taken with the telephoto lens so not the best macro shot. Plus I had to avoid getting stung.
