Still sorting out the stern end of this canoe project. Disintegrating planking, ribs and overall form have required an extra touch of patience and thinking 4 steps ahead. Lots going on here today! Had to install battens on the underside of the canoe to hold the boat shape true. Too much structural damage not to take this step. Rib steam bending continues and baby steps for final fitting of the stern stem are still in progress. #canoe #workshop #woodworking #woodencanoeheritageassociation #maine #allagash #allagashwildernesswaterway

Stern Stem dried after steam bending so it was time to cut the rib notches and dry fit the stem. Happy with the results. Last step is to bevel the stem and nail it home. I may even slather a coat of epoxy on the entire stem. Haven’t decided yet. Stems are a pain in the a@@ #maine #woodworking #canoe #canoerestoration #workshop #woodenboat #allagashwildernesswaterway #allagash

AWW Conditions Report 03/26/2024 📢 Use caution ⚠️ while traveling on the ice of the head-water lakes of the AWW. As lake levels rise, the ice moves away from the shorelines. As water flows increase, the ice will become thinner in the areas of the lakes with current. Pressure ridges have diminished leaving open water. Leave a travel plan with a friend or an AWW Rangers before traveling on the ice. #allagashwildernesswaterway #mainespring #northernmaine @mainedacf

If you ever wonder how I am enjoying my life as a full time painter, this portrait of me will give you the answer! I took a day to paint my self- portrait with my Oil Painting Figure and Portrait class. It's been a long time since I painted myself in oil. I worked from an excellent photo taken by my friend and professional photographer Troy Sands, on my Inaugural Allagash residency. This is an image of me at Churchill Dam in the Allagash Wilderness Waterway, just as I was getting out of my truck. #selfportraits #allagash #allagashwildernesswaterway #impastopainting #paletteknifepainting #williamsburgoilpaints #yarmouthframeandgallery #gleasonfineart #lupinegallerymonhegan #michaelevermette #michaelevermettefineart

More pictures of the Jalbert Brook Logging camp. Willard Sr. And Jr. at the sawbucks cutting firewood for winter. In the winter months logs would be strategically stacked next to the river and released to be driven during the high water of spring. Cut by hand dragged out of the woods by border. Logging has always had an impact on the river in one way or another. Back then bark and other debris from floating the logs made the river tannin rich and dark. The water seems to have cleared up some but nowadays during heavy rains, the lack of timber lining the tributaries and brooks from clearcuts allows the runoff to unnaturally enter the waterway at a much faster rate which poses a new threat to the river and the species that inhabit it. I think the old way of harvesting timber was better. • • • #ThrowBack #ThrowbackThursday #Tbt #Allagash #AllagashWildernessWaterway #LoggingCamp #Logging #MaineHistory #MaineGuide #MaineGuides #TheWayLifeShouldBe #Maine #Aroostook #AroostookCounty #207 #OldPictures #WoodsMen #LumberJack #LumberJacks #OldPic #OldTimes #DaysGoneBy #WillardJalbertCamps #AllagashNinja207

Willard Jalbert Jr. At the Jalbert Brook Camp in the late 1930s. It was a logging camp that my Great Grandfather, Willard Sr., took over for his hunting camp after it became abandoned. Jalbert Brook is small and is not on any river or topo map. It was situated just south of Gamash Brook (about 250 yards) at the head of the Long Sue Rapids. You can still see the clearing where it once stood and would make a great campsite. It was burned in the 60s along with most of the other history when the Allagash River became a State Park. I bet if you poke around in the woods around there you’ll find some interesting things. More pics of the logging camp in operation I’ll post later today. • • • #ThrowBack #ThrowbackThursday #Tbt #Allagash #AllagashWildernessWaterway #LoggingCamp #Logging #MaineHistory #MaineGuide #MaineGuides #TheWayLifeShouldBe #Maine #Aroostook #AroostookCounty #207 #OldPictures #WoodsMen #OldTimes #DaysGoneBy #WillardJalbertCamps #AllagashNinja207

This is a painting that I just completed for a show I am having at the Yarmouth Frame and Gallery in Yarmouth Maine called, "State Parks". I am showing with several other painters. This one is called the Moose at Martin Cove. I experienced this scene on my first day as the first artist-in-residence in the Allagash. On that morning I had planned to capture the morning sunrise at the end of Lock Dam portage, where I had a view facing east toward Eagle Lake. when I got to my destination I stumbled upon these two. Ever know what it means when a bull moose stares at you? It can only mean one thing. You were very lucky. They have excellent hearing and when I arrived he was positioned facing and looking right at me. The female had just raised her head out of the water. She was eating, and she looked at him as if to say, "What?" She definitely took her clues from the bull moose. For a while it was a stand off, until I decided to take one step forward. Fortunately for me, the bull quickly turned and bolted with the cow moose right behind him. They were gone in seconds and were completely hidden in the forest from which they came. #allagashwildernesswaterway #moosesightings #newenglandwatercolorsociety #Yarmouthframeandgallery #gleasonfineart #lupinegallerymonhegan #artintheparks #michaelevermette #michaekevermettefineart

I just completed this oil painting on canvas 20 x 24 inches from the monochrome oil I did a few weeks ago. These two are through paddlers portaging their canoe over Lock Dam in the Allagash. I captured them briefly as they came from Chamberlain Lake to Eagle Lake via Martin Stream. It was late in the afternoon and they were trying to pull up for the night at Henry David Thoreau's Campsite, about another four milers or so. It is not uncommon for through paddlers to try to paddles the whole 91 mile waterway in just a week. I going to call the painting "Through Hikers Portaging Over Lock Dam, Allagash". #allagashwildernesswaterway #mainepaddlers #paddlers #birchbarkcanoe #impastooilpainting #paletteknifepainting #yarmouthframeandgallery #gleasonfineart #lupinegallerymonhegan #michaelevermette #michaelevermettefineart

Part 3 I posted this a few years ago. I figure it is relevant now. I find it hypocritical that the BPL is considering building new infrastructure when the state burned all the history along the river 50 years ago. Might as well let all the families rebuild their camps while you’re at it. Let’s start with Sam Jalberts camps on Long Lake then head right on up to Hosea B and rebuild that too. “My father Robert Jalbert lobbied for the protection of the Allagash River without knowing whether our sporting camps would be saved or burned down. Around the dining room table at Jalberts Allagash Camps on Round Pond, he discussed the best solution with U.S. Supreme Court Justice William O. Douglas whether a national or state park would offer the best protection. Neither solution offered definitive protection for our sporting camps. Fortunately, legislators like John Martin lobbied to preserve our sporting camps and Nugent’s camps. In the winter of 1972–1973, the AWW supervisor ordered rangers to burn down Uncle Sam Jalbert’s camps on Long Lake—without legislative approval. That year or the following winter, AWW burned every building along the river, including the forest ranger camp on Round Pond (shown here) and Hosea-B. Michaud Farm was burned in the year the park was established. The Allagash Wilderness Waterway Advisory Board was established to prevent rogue supervisors from defining “wilderness” according to their whims.” @gregjalbert • • @troutunlimited @nativefishcoalition @troyjackson207 @canoer207 @canoethewild @austintheriault @llbean @phyllisjalbert @christiholmes @maineflyguys @andycutko • • • • #allagash #allagashriver #allagashwildernesswaterway #northernmaine #northmainewoods #wilderness #maine #cabin #fire #burnbabyburn #🔥#🔥🔥#🔥🔥🔥#🔥🔥🔥🔥 #cabinonfire #mainecabinmasters #uptacamp #sportingcamps #north #mainesucks #207 #207isgreat #logcabin #stateparks #statepark #thewaylifeshouldbe #allagashninja207 Should the state be adding this new infrastructure and a landing craft boat with a 250 Hp motor on the Allagash?

2/17/2024, 4:02:35 AM

Part 2 The most recent issue of the @themainesportsman (second picture) there is an editorial about the Allagash becoming too warm for brook trout. There are a few variables at play here but the most prevalent would be logging too close to the river and it’s tributaries. What is the actual point of protecting this river at all if it will eventually be too warm for its major native fish species. To me, buying land to preserve it is a far greater priority than unnecessary new infrastructure that takes away from the Allagash experience. The threat to trout in the Allagash River is nothing new. if you look at the third picture you will see that my Great Uncle Bob Jalbert was interviewed about it in 1980. How has this not been made a priority if that’s the case? The North Maine Woods is not a wilderness by any stretch. It’s still a great place to be but the amount of cutting going on right now is astronomical. If you take the shade the trees provide away from the banks of the tributaries that feed the river, it warms. Also removing the natural filter that prevents excess amounts of runoff from entering the river. When there’s nothing to slow it down, It happens at a much faster rate leading to gravel, sand, mud and debris traveling directly into the river. This causes the pools at the mouths of these brooks to become choked and they gradually fill and become more shallow resulting in the river becoming wider by eroding the bank. When a river becomes shallow it warms quicker and warm water is terrible for trout. The Maine Bureau of Parks and Lands needs to get its priorities straightened out and work harder to preserve one of the last native trout rivers on the east coast. It’s a shame this has been known about for at least 40 years and nothing has been done about it. In 20 years we may have no trout but we’ll have some pole barns. I would love to see the money used for something important like expanding the restricted zone to at 1500ft. instead of 500ft. What do you think Mr. Cutko and Mr. Deroche @mainedacf ? @troutunlimited @nativefishcoalition @troyjackson207 @canoer207 @canoethewild @austintheriault @andycutko @christiholmes @governorjanetmills

2/17/2024, 3:27:04 AM

There is a tradition in Northern Maine where things get done behind the scenes, without legislative approval and without support of the general public. Corruption, back door deals and an “out of sight, out of mind” attitude has infected the way things are done pertaining to the Allagash. This is no different. The Bureau of Public Lands is flush with COVID relief funds, and despite all of the storm damage recently at coastal parks, the bureau has still chosen to go ahead & develop the AWW restricted zone. Plans are in the works to build the following 6 buildings: -3 American Disabilities Act compliant offices at Chamberlain, Churchill and Michaud Farm. -3 pole barns at same sites. (the one at Chamberlain could be built on Public Lands outside the restricted zone and one at Churchill is unnecessary because a new one was built there recently. Why not just upgrade current structures? The AWW can replace equipment, meet ADA requirements and store equipment and materials under cover while having the least impact on the restricted zone. The least amount of development in the restricted zone is essential in my opinion. This has potential to be a national issue as the development could set a new precedent for all Wild & Scenic Rivers. A precedent that would potentially allow for more unnecessary “improvements” in the future. The Bureau is also purchasing a 23’ landing craft boat for Chamberlain Lake with a 250 hp motor. This boat is overkill and does BPL really want rangers flying around Chamberlain Lake with a 250 hp outboard motor? Not sure canoeists would like that very much. Why not just purchase a boat like the existing one that has served well for over 30 years. The primary goal for creating the Waterway in the first place was to enhance the wild character of the restricted zone. While it is far from wilderness at this point it is still important to preserve what is left. I believe the question the powers that be need to ask when considering “improvements” is- “is this enhancing the wilderness character of the AWW”. If not, the improvement needs to be justified. To me, none of this is justified and completely asinine. To Be Continued.

Today, in collaboration with the Allagash Wilderness Waterway Foundation (AWWF), Governor Janet Mills’s administration arrogantly assumes the power to revise and demean Scots-Irish and Acadien-Québécois Allagash River history. In a blatant disregard for ethical, moral, and legal obligations, both groups warped into a bizarre alternate reality of my Acadien-Québécois family’s 115-year history (1870 to 1986) farming, logging, trapping, guiding, and building a fishing and hunting lodge along the Allagash River, despite landowner threats to burn down our properties.  Read the full story in bio: Maine’s Dirty Little Culture War. #maine #history #heritage #allagashwildernesswaterway #maine207 #fortkentmaine #aroostookcounty @governorjanetmills @mainedacf @allagash_foundation @troyjackson207 @austintheriault shoelesscjj @rossrta #willardjalbertcamps #llbean #willardjalbert #bobjalbert #robertjalbert @premierblainehiggs #premierjustintrudeau #premierfrançoislegault @susancollinsforsenate @anguskingmaine #attorneygeneralaaronfrey

The AWW staff had a final training and end-of-year gathering at Churchill HQ. AWW Superintendent, Mark Deroche reported: "We invited our local partners to join for lunch, including @mefishwildlife Game Wardens, MFS Forest Rangers, North Maine Woods Personnel, and others. Most of our staff ended their seasons not long after the gathering. The 2023 season ended with staff winterizing all of their equipment and ranger facilities, and supporting each other by completing a number of other small projects. Several staff also had the opportunity to cover waterway districts outside their regularly designated locations, providing service in areas where public use was more significant. Beyond safety, this coverage also provided rangers with the benefit of learning the nuances of a new district so that they can more effectively answer questions from our visitors. “To dive into the depths of the story of the Allagash would take many words. The river has been through many phases of life and endured much to get to where it is today.
