New wall mount! I took some time to experiment with trying to figure out how I was going to display the Allosaurus skull. I toyed around with the skull and previous brackets I have printed and found that the bracket that I designed to support the Plateosaurus skull could work for the allosaurus with minor adjustments. I made them, 3D-printed the bracket, and tested it out. It's working exactly as intended though I will probably do another design iteration of the bracket to give points of contact under the mandible which will make the mount more secure, but for now it will suffice. I guess we need to think about fonts. We’ve been presenting our work on the Allosaurus specimen (MOR 693) known as “Big Al” in posters, and MANY people have been reading “Big Al” as “Big A.I.” (like Big Pharma or Big Oil). 🙄🤷 Many of us paleo-minded folks are so familiar with “Big Al” the Allosaurus—maybe even growing up watching “The Ballad of Big Al” on TV (and maybe even crying a little)—that we don’t read it as “Big A.I.”, but others do. Not a big problem by any means, but we always seek clarity and try to avoid confusion. I still prefer sans serif fonts like Arial for talks and posters. Fortunately, when I posted this silly image earlier on Twitter/X, Valentin Fejes had the great suggestion of using the free sans serif Google font Raleway (https://bit.ly/3UqZQTN), which is a great idea! AJ’s skull has been fully printed! The skull is absolutely massive, I’m very pleased with the result and can’t believe this took only a couple weeks to complete all the prints. The next steps will be to glue the pieces together and get the skull ready for paint. Another reason I chose this skull over the other one to print is because I previously printed an imprint of Allosaurus skin and that fossils has been identified as the same species as AJ: A. jimmadseni. The skin impressions have been assigned the catalog number is UMNH VP C481. I tried to find out more about this specimen and the only thing I could find on it was from the paper originally describing AJ as a new species. The paper shows pictures of the jugal, or cheek bone, and it’s half the size when compared the the jugal on AJ. AJ is already thought to be relatively immature, being smaller than Big Al who from what I’ve read is estimated to be 85% adult size. So without knowing anything else about UMNH VP C481, I’m gonna guess it’s an older juvenile to young adolescent. One of the characters that separates A. fragilis and A. jimmadseni is the shape of their jugal, or cheek bone. As described in the 2020 paper the jugal bone in A. jimmadseni has a flat ventral margin where it curves in A. fragilis. I’m going to take a break from making more replicas as I have dozens of projects at various stage of completeness that I should focus more energy on. Any prints info for the time being will be to assist in the completion of projects, like wall brackets to mount AJ which will give me additional design practice. Progress has been slower than anticipated with AJ but progress is still being made. I had an issue where my printer said the USB containing the g-code was disconnected which stopped the brain-case print I was working on after about 14 hours of a 40 hour print. The g-code is the file that tells the printer where the nozzle needs to be during the course of the print in (x,y,z) dimensions within the build volume and I currently don’t have the skull set to salvage a print fail like this (though I have some ideas now).I cut the remaining pieces I needed to print digitally and reattempted with success coming in the form of a completed mandible! The size of the skull is a bit larger than expected. There are possibly more but I know of 3 specimen of A. jimmadseni (AJ, Big Al, Big Al II) and of the 3 AJ is the smallest. The fossil is estimated to be a sub-adult, and approximately 2m shorter in terms of length when compared to Big Al II which is the largest of the 3. So I was a bit surprised to find that the length of AJ’s skull exceeds that of the Irritator skull I have previously worked on. Depending on the height of the lacrimal crests it may also exceed the height dimension of the Dilophosaurus skull I previously worked on. As it stands now I have 2 prints left for the skull plus the pins required to connect the various pieces together which should be done either late Monday or early Tuesday if all goes well. I also have more free time now as my capstone paper was accepted with no revisions required completing all work for the semester! With this free time I’m hoping to continue work on completed prints that are waiting for paint and/or articulation! I started 3D-printing the skull of an Allosaurus! This project has been a long time coming. Ever since I found out researchers will upload their scans and/or data to repositories the very first dinosaur I began to look for was Tyrannosaurus and I ended up with INCREDIBLE results. Allosaurus was the second and much more challenging search for data. The artist InhumanSpecies, the same artist who digitally sculpted my T. rex, has a model of an Allosaurus skull on Cults3D that is printer ready but I wanted to see if I could find scans. I found several skeletons lacking the permissions to download. Then I checked SketchFab and found a couple low poly skulls but nothing I was excited about. Then I decided to double check MorphoSource at a later date and the data for the study titled “Endocranial anatomy of Allosaurus supports neural trends among non-avian theropod dinosaurs” had been uploaded, so I requested access to the data, received it, and segmented the data into the STL files. The wait was worth it as I got access to 2 different skulls from 2 different species of Allosaurus, so I got a choice! Between A. fragilis and A. jimmadseni I chose to work on A. jimmadseni for a few reasons: it’s the smaller skull of the 2, it’s a half skull so wall mounting it for display should be easy while also cutting down on print time and filament used, and my most desired Allosaurus specimen for printing purposes is MOR 693, Big Al, whose scans I know exist but I could not find anywhere. Big Al was reclassified into A. jimmadseni in 2020 when the species was recognized so this skull is the closest I think I can get to printing Big Al. This skull is the holotype of A, jimmadseni and it’s known as A.J. and DINO 11541 Both the Allosaurus skulls reside at @dinosaurnps with the A. fragilis skull (the larger skull not being printed) on display. Finally I upgraded my printer from an Ender 3 to a Neptune 4 Plus. This print that would’ve taken 2 days on the Ender took less than 12 hours on the Neptune. Tenemos el primer vistazo a lo que será la tan pedida y esperada figura Super Colossal del Allosaurus para la nueva línea de figuras de Chaos Theory que compartirá también figuras con la linea de Epic Evolution de este año 2024, siendo esta una de las especies que se verán dentro de la nueva serie de "Jurassic World: Chaos Theory" a finales de este año en Netflix, la serie secuela de Camp Cretaceous que conectará con Jurassic World Dominion, la cuál ofrece mostrar lo que no se vio en JWD y lo que muchos esperaban. Siendo sincero, en mi opinión, esperaba un mejor esculpido ya que este se ve algo.. caricaturezco y algo infantil, pero eso se puede arreglar ya teniendole en mano, ya sea haciendole un custom y algunas modificaciones en los ojos y en los dientes, fuera de eso, en lo demás se ve genial. Posdata: Tengo otras fotos filtradas de este nuevo Allo Super Colossal, pero no he podido mostrarlas en este mismo post ya q no encaja bien el tamaño de la foto con los requisitos que pide ig. Yesterday, Ohio University undergrads Maranda Stricklin and Peter Rhynard were invited to speak at the Ohio University Emeriti Association luncheon. They both presented their research on Big Al, the Allosaurus (MOR 693). I wasn’t invited (I’m not a Professor Emeritus just yet!), but by all accounts, they did a fantastic job! Dinosaur fossils are awesome to see and Utah has plenty. Across the state, new dinosaurs are found on a regular basis. Each one is different and awesome in its own way. They all add to our body of knowledge about these extinct reptiles, their evolution, relationships, habitat, and biology. This cast sculpture is of the arm & hand of one of those dinosaur discoveries. Many Allosaurus bones and teeth have been discovered, but complete skeletons are extremely rare. One of the best skeletons known was found in 1990 at Dinosaur National Monument in Utah. That spectacular and nearly complete specimen has one of the few complete preserved hands known for Allosaurus. It preserves all of the bones intact and in place, just as when the animal was alive, including the small and delicate bones of the wrist. This replica of that hand and forearm is ½ actual size and shows this amazingly complete fossil’s arm just as it was found. I sculpted this Allosaurus jimmadseni arm & hand in clay using the illustrations and description of the specimen in the scientific literature and photos of the original. "Big Al" - Allosaurus jimmadseni Representação artística do Allosaurus conhecido por "MOR 693", que foi descoberto em 1991 no Wyomming. O apelido do espécime ficou "Big Al" dado a sua tamanha importância, afinal, se tratou do Allosaurus mais bem preservado já descoberto até aquele momento. 95% do esqueleto está completo e preservou um elevado número de lesões e infecções, mostrando assim, que Big Al teve uma vida difícil e bem agressiva. Dentre os feridos, estavam severas lesões em cinco costelas, cinco vértebras e quatro ossos nos pés. As lesões demonstravam marcas de cicatrização/calcificação, significando que o organismo de Al lutou até os últimos instantes de sua vida contra a mortalidade, mesmo que no final, eles o vencessem.
