몇 년 전, 브릭스 매거진 첫 호를 발행할 때 일본 신사 사진이 필요했다. 당시 협업하던 디자인 회사가 사진을 구해다 줬는데, 신사 사진이 아니라 향 사진이었다. 무슨 환유법도 아니고, 그래도 사진은 좋아 나도 언젠가 외국 사원에 꽂힌 향 사진을 찍어보고 싶었다. 그로부터 정말 오랜 시간이 지나는 동안 홍콩에서 딱 한 번 기회가 있었고, 최근에야 마카오의 아마 사원에서 두 번째 기회를 잡았다. 잘은 기억이 안 나는데 이날이 금전 운을 소망하는 날인가 뭔가 해서 사원이 북적이고 있었다. 찍고 보니 과연 대륙의 기상이 느껴지는 향 아닌가, 큰 돈을 벌려면 이 정도 크기는 돼야지. 꼭 폭죽 같아서 잠시 후 펑펑 불꽃놀이가 시작될 것 같았다. #travel #macau #streetphotography #candidphotography #coloane #amatemple #마카오 #바라 #아마사원 #아마템플 #해외여행 #여행사진 #마카오 #거리사진

Many residents engaged in fishing and often went to the A-Ma Temple for blessing. The incense in the temple is prosperous, and there are four main traditional activities every year for faithful worship and blessings, including the upper head incense on the 30th night of the Lunar New Year, the opening of Guanyin library, the birthday of Mazu and the ascension of Mazu. Macao Part 2: old buildings! I'm a sucker for historical architecture. After feeling disorientated by the outsized opulence and hordes of gamblers that dominate the Cotai Strip, I decided to wake up super early the next morning and head to the Old City before the rest of Macao woke up and all the tourists flooded in. For those unaware, Macao was a Portuguese colony for over 400 years, and glimpses of its colonial past now stand alongside Hong Kong-esque apartment blocks in a fascinating mishmash. It was awesome to wander through the historic centre all alone and to have the time and space to appreciate my surroundings. Returned later that afternoon with friends (and much better weather), and still felt so much more comfortable here than in the Cotai Strip. Gimme churches, temples, and cobblestone streets for days and I won't complain. More on these streets in Part 3 (I apparently took a billion photos so we might be here all week, gah!). Formerly known as Mazu Pavilion, also known as Zhengjue Zen Forest, commonly known as Tianhou Temple. The whole temple consists of four main buildings: Mazu Hall (Main Hall), Stone Hall, Hongren Hall and Guanyin Pavilion. In the old days, Macau was still a fishing village. Many residents engaged in fishing and often went to the A-Ma Temple for blessing. The incense in the temple is prosperous, and there are four main traditional activities every year for faithful worship and blessings, including the upper head incense on the 30th night of the Lunar New Year, the opening of Guanyin library, the birthday of Mazu and the ascension of Mazu. George Chinnery (1774-1852) was born in London. He studied at the Royal Academy Schools and sailed to India in 1802 to work as a portrait painter. As his reputation grew in Calcutta, he became a sought-after painter for British merchants and colonial administrators. In 1825, he relocated to the Portuguese colony of Macau. The A-Ma Temple is a Taoist temple in Macau dedicated to the goddess A-Ma, also known as Tin Hau. It honors this deity of seafarers and fishermen. It was one of the key historic and cultural sites that drew Chinnery’s interest.
