Great Salt Lake sunset 🌅 I had the pleasure of taking a family from Florida out on a sunset tour last night. As we watched the sunset, tears literally weeped from their eyes from the beauty that is the great Salt Lake, surrounding mountains and fiery sky! The great Salt Lake is such an amazingly beautiful, unique gem that is so taken for granted. It is home, breeding ground and a vital pitstop for millions of migratory birds every year. The water is packed full of healing minerals that are great for the skin joints, muscles, arthritis and different skin conditions. Many of these minerals are harvested and used in our every day lives. Salt, magnesium, potassium, calcium etc This is such a precious and unique resource for so many reasons. While the shoreline is not exactly pleasant with the smell of decaying brine shrimp and harmless brine flies, the lake itself is odorless! And there are no bugs out on the water! In the middle of the Summer, the brine shrimp, clear out all the algae, and make the water crystal clear! The Great Salt Lake is truly one of my favorite places on this planet. Utah’s iconic eponymous Great Salt Lake is shrinking – drying up due to mismanagement of the resource. Listed as the sixth largest natural lake in the United States, after the five Great Lakes, it’s now a loosing it’s pool size at a rapid rate. 20 years of drought in the western U.S. hasn’t helped, but Utah’s rapid, thoughtless population growth has contributed. Took this photo a couple years ago over Utah and brought it up over dinner with a friend tonight who lives in the area. This is the Great Salt Lake. The red hue comes from a bacteria called halophilic bacteria which flourishes when the salt level rises. It's also been called "America's Dead Sea". A R S E N I C D U S T. i read a horrifying article about how the great salt lake is shrinking & is only a few inches away from a nearly six-decade low (& how it’s july but the lake’s lowest point usually happens in october). worse, as it dries up, it exposes dirt that has arsenic in it & that the wind will blow around arsenic dust into the lungs of all the people here. then i was thinking that i personally know people in utah who don’t believe in climate change or the effects of irresponsible human consumption of water/resources & this is an unfortunate fate for them & all of us & the earth, if you ask me. no one wants arsenic dust blowing around. but the arsenic playground sure looks pretty from above. maybe lessen water usage? i don’t know how to help fix this. godspeed, all. we’ve really outdone ourselves. #sungoddessontour #greatsaltlake #utahrealestate #toxic #help #utah #watertosurvivenotthrive #americasdeadsea

We did the obligatory visit to the Great Salt Lake. Also known as America’s Dead Sea as a nod to its Middle Eastern counterpart. Utah’s capital in the United States, Salt Lake City, sits at 1300 m, bordered by the waters of the Great Salt Lake and the peaks of the Wasatch Range, which rise over 1.6 km above the Salt Lake valley floor. The Great Salt Lake, partly visible on the left side of the image, is the largest salt-water lake in the Western Hemisphere. Owing to its shallowness, its size shifts substantially. The lighter blue areas denote solar evaporation ponds at the edges of the lake, which produce salts and brine. The lake contributes an estimated $1.3 billion annually to Utah's economy, comprising the harvesting of brine shrimp, industry in mineral extraction, and recreation. Although it has been referred to as "America's Dead Sea”, the lake provides habitat for millions of native birds, brine shrimp, shorebirds and waterfowl. The mountains and several parks appear in varying shades of red, owing to this false-colour band combination. Can I let you in on a little secret? The Great Salt Lake is gross and full of bugs and you should definitely avoid it at all costs. Okay I am clearly kidding. I'm always a little amazed at the reactions I get when I tell people I have floated in the salty lake and would do it again in a heartbeat. The things that scare people away are just another reason why I love this lake.
