I arrived on Kauai fifty years ago this week, April of 1974, with my husband and three young children…a five-year-old, a two-year-old and a four-month old baby. My husband’s job brought us here. I was a wife and mother…a devoted homemaker. I had never made art, never studied art, never wanted to be an artist. A year later I was a struggling single mother with three young children. We had nothing, not even a car. We got around by hitchhiking. I rented a house by the beach in Anahola and began a new life, in sync with the rhythms of the sea. I didn’t know it at the time, but it was a fortuitous decision. It was a place that gathered me in its arms. It changed me and placed me on a new path. In my house by the sea in the middle of the night, I began to draw. And draw. And draw. While the world slept, my drawing world was vivid and wide awake. I drew self-portraits. I drew the food in my refrigerator. I drew my sleeping children, their blonde hair cascading over pillows. I drew the dark sky bordered by feathery ironwood trees. I drew gnarled tree trunks stunted by salt wind. I drew the wild waves that pounded relentlessly at the edge of our property, at the edge of our lives. It began to dawn on me that these involuntary drawing sessions were awakening something vital to my life’s trajectory and purpose. In a state of doubt, I hid this raw, untamed work in my closet, until a friend came across it and persuaded me to “put it out there”. Since I had an art connection on ‘Oahu, I began to sell my work. What began as an intuitive nudge...something unexplainable that felt like sleepwalking...ended up healing me and changing my life. While I was out having fun, my hoomie was off doing some work. Maybe you want to see what she was up to? She visited one of the Hawaiian homelands which is land that the state of Hawai'i holds in trust for Native Hawaiians. They have a very long list of folks who are waiting to buy a home on homelands. The government is very slow in having land available for Hawaiians. Some of the orgs hoomie works with are setting up income generating projects on the land that can also benefit the community. The second pic is a local marketplace for small businesses, pics 3-4 are a camping site that they're running. It's also a place where locals can hold events. It's right on the beach and it's beautiful! This place used to be a drug den but now many families come and make use of the space. We also went out to dinner and had some delicious ice cream cake! Yum!! And there was another beautiful beach in front of the restaurant! Last two pics are of the offices of hoomie's partner org where she hung out for a few days. Legendary Hole in the Mountain. Kalalea Mountain overlooking Anahola town on Kaua’i, Hawaii, has a hole in its ridge. Locals here simply call it “Hole-in-the-Mountain.” But you can’t see this hole clearly unless you climb up the mountain and get up close to it. (This postcard shows the hole as an inset.) Some say it’s about the size of a helicopter, and others say someone actually flew a helicopter through it. Hawaiians have many legends about it. One says that a supernatural bird pecked its way through the mountain to get to Anahola town, likely to create a shortcut for itself. Another legend records a powerful demigod hurling his magical spear through the mountain, piercing its side. But this hole-in-the-mountain became world-famous as the filming site of the 1976 movie King Kong. It also was featured in the first shot of the 1981 feature film Raiders of the Lost Ark. The opening scene is supposed to take place in the Peruvian jungle where the main character, Indiana Jones, discovers an ancient booby-trapped temple. Kalalea Mountain also serves as a backdrop for a Polynesian resort—supposedly located on Makatea Island—in the 1998 feature film Six Days, Seven Nights. Coincidently, this movie also stars Harrison Ford.
