💭RUMINATIONS💭 NIGHTWATCHING by @tsierraauthor is April’s @literallydeadclub pick and it was a 5 🌟 read for me! (Swipe right for the synopsis.) As soon as I started the book, I was enthralled. I didn’t want to put it down and when I had to, I couldn’t wait to pick it back up. I even downloaded the audiobook to listen while doing chores. This book was MORE than what I was expecting from the synopsis and at one point I feared where it was heading but the author thankfully didn’t go down that “poor crazy mother does crazy things” road. There’s a lot more I can say about that but I don’t want to spoil the book too much. Suffice to say I can’t wait for the live show with @booksandlala! Every part of the story was atmospheric and as a reader I WISHED I could reach in and help the mother because you knew right away that the police wouldn’t be helpful. In fact, because of the slew of postpartum mother trope I’ve been reading these past years, I was filled with anxiety midway through the book. I’m not ashamed to say I actually skipped to the ending and skimmed the pages looking for a specific answer to my question before I could continue reading. I ruined it for myself a little and loved it. I think the author does such a fantastic job illustrating the different ways men (and law enforcement/child services) fail women, especially mothers. We are constantly reminded that we have to always have a hard exterior and cover our bases when it comes to our safety and our children. Because others for sure won’t. Of course not all men are terrible and not all women are great caretakers but that’s not what this story is about. If you love stories that’ll keep you on the edge of your seat, esp ones with a satisfying ending then I can’t recommend this enough. It’s a great suspenseful horror and thriller. I’d absolutely recommend this to anyone who wants to start either of those genres for the first time.

Not last Thursday, the Thursday before (23rd November or something?) we played rounders. On skates. Without a bat. We did, however, have the best ball in the history of man to play with. It's amazing how much playing a game not designed to be played on skates is a test of skill. We had more falls from folks just stood still than we usually do when we're skating at top speed! This is for sure going to be an unpopular opinion but I didn’t enjoy MIDNIGHT IS THE DARKEST HOUR by Ashley Winstead as much as I thought I would 🙈. It was one of the few books I was really looking forward to, and I even preordered it. That’ll teach me 😅. You can swipe right to read the synopsis. As soon as I saw it compared to VERITY I should have known bc I’m not a fan of that author’s work. But alas, we live and learn. Worse things have happened. I did love the setting. I’ve always loved when a book takes place in the south, especially Louisiana. Some of my favorite books that I read in my early 20s took place there. So reading this made me nostalgic for that feeling. The small-minded, religious/cult town provided the right atmosphere for a suspenseful and claustrophobic read. But the thing that ruined it for me was the fact that I knew right away who “the killer” was. And I mean like by the third chapter or something. And after that, it was a loooong book. I know Ruth is meant to be naive and sheltered but she was such a smart girl otherwise that I couldn’t believe it took her that long to put things together. I kept reading thinking maybe I’m wrong and that the author made it this obvious to throw us off. But no. The ending tho, and I mean that last paragraph? That last SENTENCE? That was really good. Saved it in a way. This is also November’s pick for the @literallydeadclub and the last book for the year so I’m bummed! Can’t wait for next year’s picks! ❓Did you read this? This weeks session was a balloon party! Activities and exercises are hidden inside balloons, when a balloon is popped the activity is revealed and we then complete it. It was an absolute sweat fest and a lot of fun! I still have an achy core and voice that is scratchy from barking orders at this little lot! I gave it three stars because I was very much down the middle with how many I enjoyed and how many I wasn't too keen on.
