First two days in southern Greece was Athens Athens Athens. Got up at the crack of dawn to beat the crowds to the Acropolis, where the largely reconstructed Partheon is still a building site. Still tremendously fabulous though. Give back the Elgin marbles is what I say! Met Emperor Hadrian doing a spot of sunbathing, Zeus proudly showing off his little willy, and - the best of all - The Antikythera machine, the world's oldest computer and a device that literally changed the way we see history when it was discovered in a ship wreck. The original Olympic stadium from 1896 was also awe inspiring. MYSTERY MONDAY Part One of Two The first Mac computer was released in 1984. But it wasn't the first computer. The first CDC supercomputer was released in 1964. But is wasn't the first computer either. We need to go back before tech booms, before the space race, before the industrial revolution. Even before modern civilization. We credit the Greeks with inventing many things that we still appreciate today, but did you ever think to credit them with inventing the computer? Let's go back almost a century before the life of Jesus, 1500 years before Columbus got lost, 1900 years before the advent of the electric light. Back to 87 BC, and the #AntikytheraMechanism First discovered in a Roman-era shipwreck by Greek sponge divers in 1900, the fragments of a shoebox-size contraption, once filled with gears and used to predict the movements of heavenly bodies, has both baffled and amazed generations of researchers ever since. The discovered fragments made up just one-third of a larger device: a highly-sophisticated hand-powered gearbox capable of accurately predicting the motions of the five planets known to the ancient Greeks, as well as the sun, the phases of the moon and the solar and lunar eclipses — displaying them all relative to the timings of ancient events such as the Olympic Games. Yet despite years of painstaking research and debate, scientists were never able to fully replicate the mechanism that drove the astonishing device, or the calculations used in its design. The Antikythera mechanism was similar in size to a mantel clock, and bits of wood found on the fragments suggest it was housed in a wooden case. Like a clock, the case would’ve had a large circular face with rotating hands. (Even though this sounds like a clock, remember that the mechanical clock wouldn't be invented for 1,300 years!) The Antikythera mechanism - as featured in my @dorlingkindersli book ‘Shipwreck Detective’ 2006 p.60-65 - is the ‘dial of destiny’ in the new Indiana Jones movie. Just sayin’ - Watched with Bertie last night. The shipwreck itself - also illustrated in the book, also appears in the film, in a rather eel and skeleton filled fantastical form. The complex brass instrument is named after the Mediterranean island that the device was discovered on, in the shipwreck of a Roman Cargo vessel found by Greek sponge divers in 1900. The ship was also full of statues, amphorae, the bronze humans and horses mistaken for bodies by the first divers. Jaques Cousteau dived the wreck again in 1953 and the extraordinary shoe-box sized mechanism itself continues to inspire research and speculation today. Thought to be a form of ancient mechanical brass ‘computer’ and once housed in a wooden box with an operating handle, it is believed that it could be used to predict the movements of the sun and the planets and in a sense, to foretell the future. I remember illustrating these pages and writing the many annotations with freind Richard Platt, @lightandleadglass - and digging through my sketchbooks from teenage inter-railing trips to find old Greek travel tickets to collage into the pages. Kiss Sándor szobrászművész (1925-1999) 1965-ben készítette egy ma is nagynevű magyar elektronikai vállalat Budapest, Hűvösvölgyben található irodaházának fogadó részlegében lévő falfelületre eme műalkotását. A pirogránit domborművön egy híres ókori csatajelenet elevenedik meg a szemünk előtt. Időszámításunk előtt 213-ban egy római flotta vette ostrom alá a szicíliai Szirakuza városát. Szirakuza akkor már több mint ötszáz éves múltra visszatekintő, háromszázezer lakosú, virágzó görög város volt. A második pun háborúban Karthágó oldalán állt, ezért támadták meg a rómaiak. Az ostrom közel két évig tartott, a város ellenállását az idős szicíliai görög Arkhimédész, minden idők egyik legnagyobb matematikusa és fizikusa (továbbá természettudós, mérnök, csillagász, filozófus) vezette. A hagyomány szerint a támadó hajókra irányította a nap fényét, így felgyújtotta a támadó hadihajókat. Arkhimédész 75 évesen, i. e. 212-ben, Szirakuza elfoglalásakor vesztette életét. A legenda szerint a geometriai munkájába merült tudós így szólt a rá támadó katonára: ne zavard köreimet! Ma szobra áll Arkhimédésznek Szirakuzában, ezen egyik kezével a tükröt igazítja, a másikkal a szemét árnyékolva figyeli a távoli tengert. This morning, I have fallen down a wormhole! I'm supposed to be reading for week 5, which is on the art of Greek pottery. I'd downloaded the quick silhouette pottery guide and went to check my source... It was in an article that had taken the image from The Museum of Art and Archaeology of the University of Missouri, Columbia. I popped over there ... an article caught my eye, nothing to do with pottery, called "Gladys Weinberg and Indiana Jones". I was an extra on the latest film, which is why it caught my attention. I may follow up on Weinberg's research into Hellenistic glass... In 1901, the Antikythera Mechanism was discovered in the wreckage of a trading ship near the Greek island of Antikythera. The ship dates ~50 BCE, however, the Greeks may have built the device around 200 BCE. Only a third of the original device that remains is split into 82 fragments and includes 30 corroded bronze gearwheels. It’s often considered as an ancient computer and was a complex astronomical device that tracked the motions of the Sun, Moon, and planets of Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn on any particular day in the past or future. The Antikythera Mechanism “combined cycles from Babylonian astronomy, mathematics from Plato’s Academy and ancient Greek astronomical theories.” Although it’s the only one of its kind found, such devices have been referenced in Greco-Roman literature, and perhaps more of these astronomical devices may be found in other ship wreckage.
