Quest’opera lega il suo nome a quello di una delle più avventurose scoperte di archeologia subacquea del XX sec.: il Relitto di Anticitera. 🧽Nell’ottobre del 1900, un gruppo di pescatori di spugne greci sostò presso quest’isola vicino Creta. Dopo un’immersione, uno dei pescatori disse di aver visto sul fondo marino un insieme di cadaveri di uomini e cavalli. ⚓️La sua non era ebbrezza da anidride carbonica, bensì era appena stato intercettato il luogo del naufragio di una nave oneraria romana che trasportava diverse statue. Tra queste, l’efebo in bronzo alto 1,96 m e databile al 335 a.C., attribuito all’artista greco Eufranore. 🍎Non sappiamo cosa il giovane tenesse nella mano protesa. Sempre su #Archimede di #Siracusa … l’estate scorsa durante il @taorminafilmfestival 2023 ho avuto il privilegio di vedere in anteprima nazionale l’episodio finale della saga di #IndianaJones! Grande protagonista di questo ultimo film è proprio la nostra #Sicilia, con il misterioso ‘quadrante del destino’, un oggetto ispirato al ‘planetario di Archimede’, oggetto costruito dall’inventore siracusano nel III secolo a.C., strumento dal quale molto probabilmente nacque poi il famoso #meccanismo di #Antikythera (realizzato forse nel II secolo a.C.)! Nel film ovviamente i #poteri del ‘quadrante’ sono stati resi cinematografici, il ‘planetario’ reale non aveva nessun potere di far viaggiare nel tempo, bensì era uno strumento didattico ed utilizzato per studiare le ‘meccaniche celesti’, essenzialmente legate ai 5 pianeti conosciuti, insieme a Sole e Luna! Here we have Sir Antikythera, Olivin the Magnanimous and King Cephilious! Me and my dad worked on Anti and Olivin together and he made King Cephilious for my younger sister. Customs include AMAZING 3d printed parts from Anthony Houseal for Anti and Kevin Olson for Olivin!! @bear.blaise painted the octopus head by @zombie13.customs from @wolf_king_customs for King Cephilious! Anywho, last night he floated the idea of how cool it would be to have a story where they all met, so I brainstormed their introduction! My dad came up with the name for Sir Antikythera, which is a reference to the mysterious ancient machine the, the Antikythera mechanism. There is also character named Lady Macrina, which is a reference to the Patron Saint of Robotics! I haven’t made her as a custom yet because I’m still working on her design. Αντικύθηρα Antikythera, Greece Antikythera (/ˌæntɪkɪˈθɪərə/) or Anticythera (Greek: Ἀντικύθηρα [andiˈciθira])[note 1] is a Greek island lying on the edge of the Aegean Sea, between Crete and Peloponnese. In antiquity the island was known as Aigilia (Αἰγιλία). Since the 2011 local government reform, it is part of the municipality of Kythira island. Antikythera may also refer to the Kythira-Antikythira Strait, through which Mediterranean water enters the Sea of Crete. Its land area is 20.43 square kilometres (7.89 square miles),and it lies 38 kilometres (24 miles) south-east of Kythira. It is the most distant part of the Attica region from its heart in the Athens metropolitan area. It is lozenge-shaped, 10.5 km (6.5 mi) NNW to SSE by 3.4 km (2.1 mi) ENE to WSW. It is notable for being the location of the discovery of the Antikythera mechanism and for the historical Roman-era Antikythera wreck. Its main settlement and port is Potamós (pop. 34 inhabitants in the 2011 census). The only other settlements are Galanianá (pop. 15), and Charchalianá (pop. 19). Antikythera is periodically visited by the Ablemon Nautical Company ferry F/B Ionis on its route between Piraeus (Athens) and Kissamos-Kastelli on Crete. The earliest known inhabitants (5th or 4th millennium BC) were likely seasonal hunters who traveled there to exploit the presence of migratory birds. The island of Antikythera is almost deserted nowdays with only 17 remaining inhabitants. Once we arrived, we asked the very first local we bumped into which is the easiest access the lighthouse. “Νo, you don't go there! Road is treacherous and there is nobody to help you in case of emergency”. We disobeyed 😇 and we went anyway! Offroading with a Fiat 500 can be fun but at some point, it was about to pop the clogs! So, we started hiking down the cliff in pitch darkness hoping we will see the light of the lighthouse soon. The air was still, the ground was barren, it was otherworldly. After one hour or so we reached the lighthouse, standing there lonely at the edge of the island, engulfed by razor sharp rocks. There I witnessed the darkest, most beautiful sky I had ever seen. I could feel part of the universe as the stars surrounded me. Light to dark. Dark to light. .
