Johann Joachim Kaendler first created two depictions of the magnificent bird in 1734, which were modelled as life-size sculptures in March 1734 and April 1734 on behalf of Augustus the Strong (1670–1733) for the animal gallery of the Japanese Palace in Dresden. Seven years later, he once again produced two peacock models, but this time in medium size. Kaendler’s records of the models created in July and August 1741 are evidence of this. In the 18th century, such delicate candlesticks, fitted with just a small candle, served as a source of light during evenings at the desk or in the chamber at night. The Meissen porcelain version enjoyed great popularity due to its practical use as well as its charmingly playful design. This model is known in different variations: in addition to peacocks, they could alternatively be decorated with miniature gardener figures, pugs, or other dogs. La Vierge folle. Incontestable chef-d’œuvre de Rik Wouters, de l’art belge et sans équivalent dans la sculpture européenne. Il a fallu plusieurs années de travail au jeune artiste flamand pour arriver à terminer une œuvre inspirée d’un spectacle d’Isadora Duncan vu à Bruxelles quelques années plus tôt. Réalisée dans son étroit atelier grenier de la rue de la Sapinière à Boitsfort, avec pour seul recul sa minuscule cage d’escalier, elle est terminée fin 1911 et moulée sur place en janvier 1912. Coulée en bronze dans la foulée grâce à Georges Giroux elle sera exposée en mars 1912 dans sa nouvelle galerie à Bruxelles et fera immédiatement l’unanimité, saluée par toute la critique artistique. C’est à ce moment que l’artiste va se jeter à corps perdu dans la peinture grâce au soutien financier de Giroux. Cela faisait des années que je faisais le siège de son propriétaire d’alors, un homme adorable rencontré en 1994 avec qui nous plaisantions chaque année du camion que je comptais lui envoyer pour enlever ce chef-d’œuvre qu’il aimait et sur lequel il veillait comme son père l’avait fait avant lui. Une page se tourne, une autre s’écrit. Nous ne sommes que des passeurs d’art. Having personally traversed an African marketplace, I was captivated by a display adorned with spices and hues that were distinctly distinct from one another. It was there that I conceived the notion of preserving these hues for all time. As I remove my camera and glance at the mother manning the stall to inquire whether I may photograph her, I observe a blatant denial in her countenance—one that is not hostile in nature but rather imbued with a sense of apprehension—a straightforward denial.
