Eagle Seed Jar When I lived on the edge of wide expanses of high plains desert in Roswell, New Mexico, I met with many young Native Americans in my job as a Job Corps Residential Director. One morning at 2 AM I stepped between two groups of Job Corps members behind the male dormitories. One group was from big city populations such as Houston and Austin. The other group was made up of Native Americans from small towns and reservations. The groups were getting ready to clash. I stepped between the two groups and quietly just stood there in the dark, like an Eagle Seed Jar containing all their futures. Textural Elements #6 is the last in this series showing my journey into the power of abstraction with a sense of presence asking the viewer to engage and connect with my joyous vision. My compositional placement of shapes and colours using opaque and transparent pigments allows some of the various layers to show what lies beneath and working with textural media increases the tactile nature of the painting. There are several reasons why I continually use this material. Firstly, it provides me with numerous opportunities for processing through vector-based production techniques. Additionally, acrylic glass is a contemporary material that can be found on many surfaces in the public space, which adds relevance to my work. This week’s Artist to Watch is @itsmaryonking ❤️‍🔥 At just 25-years-old, Maryon’s songwriting and vocal abilities are something to be rivaled. Not only does her music reflect the sonic influences of strong female voices of Lorde, Kate Bush and Madonna, but the uncompromised vision for her artistry that she’s learned from them. Born in Calarasi and raised in Italy, Maryon fought her parents to pursue a career in music. After being told to focus on other activities as a kid, Maryon found a way to take singing lessons without the knowledge of her parents. At 18-years-old her parents pushed her to continue her education at university. She moved to London to study languages but secretly switched to music. She quickly immersed herself in the London music scene, touring twice on two separate tours with the well-known DJ Sigala, and then writing music with friends but soon gaining the attention of people within the industry. For the last four years she’s written in London, LA, and Paris, working with The Stereotypes, Aaron Forbes, and Gez O’Connell to find and perfect her sound. She is now a full time LA resident where she quickly caught the attention of collaborators such as Dreamlab (Katy Perry “Never Really Over”), Dagny, Kenzie, Joe Kirkland, and many more. Maryon has had recent sessions and collaborations with Coffee, Kenzie, Kiiara, Ben Samama, Alex Bilowitz, Dagny, PHD, Lenno, Sam DeRosa, Kate Morgan, and others.
