Today is the last day to see this wonderful Claude Viallat exhibition, 'Made in Nîmes', on view at @galerietemplon Viallat, now 88, is a legendary figure of the last French avant-garde Supports/Surfaces movement, which involved a questioning of the codes of Western painting with works created on surfaces with no stretchers or frames. The show is composed of painted works on canvas tarpaulins, beach umbrellas & found fabrics, created by the French artist between the 1970s & today. This work resonates with me in numerous ways, & in this case the enjoyment of his work outweighs paradoxical nature of that resonance that is so common to engaging with contemporary Western artwork as an contemporary Native artist. From a cultural vantage point, of course I don't perceive the creation of painted works 'off the stretcher' as being new, even over the last century, as this kind of creative practice is inherent within pre-contact First Nations cultures & much continued today. But this doesn't mean I can't appreciate & enjoy it. Most of his paintings also feature a repeating geometric form, suggesting a cell or small bone, intriguing in its seeming yet elusive familiarity & its ambiguousness. Again, my understanding of 'all-over' painting as part of long-standing Indigenous arts practices didn't diminish the pleasure in how his work embraces this element. And I appreciate that the exhibition PR does name Native culture as being one of Viallant's influences, which makes a relevant & refreshing change from the more pervasive practice of rendering our influence invisible. Overall I found the combined exuberance, vibrancy, sophistication, sensuality, questing & lyrical off-kilterness of his pieces quite rapturous.
