Member Spotlight: “I’m Sarah Stippich, and I’m so grateful and proud to be a member of Outlaw Arts. By day, I’m an elementary school librarian. I grew to love pottery when I was in high school and was given free reign of the art room during study halls. Fast forward to spring of 2020 when I finished a refresher course from Cornelia, right as the world was shutting down due to Covid. The studio served as a form of connection and, to be honest, therapy for me through the next few years. Coming to the studio gave me an outlet for creativity, a peaceful space and a connection to community. To this day, I love spending time there on weekends and in the summer, creating next to kind, interesting, supportive people who I learn so much from. I always leave with new ideas, especially for cool new glaze combinations. I’ve taught a few beginner wheel classes with students ranging from teens to adults. It feels great to be able to introduce others to something I love so much. In the studio, I create almost solely on the wheel (handbuilding is still a bit of a mystery to me) and most of my work is functional - mugs, bowls, vases, a few plates. I long to make BIG pieces... the feeling of smacking down a huge mound of clay on the wheel, the force of my body centering it, the way my mind clears of every other thought as I try to make it into something well-structured. Found out it is #internationalsculptureday , so I pulled this RPPC (real photo postcard) for today's post. Pictured here is "The Lion Fighter", a sculpture by Albert Wolff, originally cast in 1858 and the original is located in Berlin. The original plaster cast was obtained by the Fairmount Park Art Association (now @assocpublicart ) along with a plaster cast of "The Mounted Amazon Attacked by a Panther" by August Kiss to be used as companion works in 1892. These plaster pieces were used to cast a replica of "the Lion Fighter" locally by Bureau Brothers which was then displayed at the 1893 Columbian Exposition in Chicago. When it returned to Philly, it was temporarily displayed in front of the main Post Office at 9th and Chestnut from 1893-1897. There was some public push to leave the sculpture there, however the Lion Fighter was moved to East River Drive (now Kelly Drive) from 1897-1929 on a "jutting rock", which appears to be the location in this photo postcard. When the sculpture moved to the Parkway in 1929, the Mounted Amazon was cast to accompany it. These sculptures are also displayed as a pair in Berlin. You can see them here in Philly at the base of the @philamuseum steps. Image 1 and 3 are the same, the first being slightly corrected by my new scanner. Eagle Seed Jar When I lived on the edge of wide expanses of high plains desert in Roswell, New Mexico, I met with many young Native Americans in my job as a Job Corps Residential Director. One morning at 2 AM I stepped between two groups of Job Corps members behind the male dormitories. One group was from big city populations such as Houston and Austin. The other group was made up of Native Americans from small towns and reservations. The groups were getting ready to clash. I stepped between the two groups and quietly just stood there in the dark, like an Eagle Seed Jar containing all their futures. I met men and women in these areas who only knew the desert. They could hear its music and move through its shapes. Check out all of the artwork as inspiration. 🎉 We’ll depart the store and head to the waterfront, then zigzag through some iconic and inspiring sights, ending at Love City Brewery. 🍻 Get a pint and celebrate Worldwide Pinhole Photography Day! Throughout the walk, you can connect with NJ Pinhole Club members, talk shop, ask questions, get advice, and, of course... Take amazing photos!! Bring a camera with you! (It doesn’t need to be Pinhole—all photographers are welcome!) Bring either a digital or film camera. If you’re not using a Pinhole camera but would like to emulate that style, you can focus on long exposures!
