Had my first IO moth from last year's brood hatch and he's definitely odd. I don't think I've ever seen a male so pink. Now, females are red and for reference, the last two sides are of a different wild male, so you can get a better idea on how yellow they should be. new to the garden!! i saw this fuzzy caterpillar on my candlestick cassia and i said “hmmm, sulphurs have some texture to them but def not like this!!” so i went to a facebook butterfly group and they pointed me in the right direction. say hello to the automeris IO (or peacock) moth! upon further research, this is the final stage before they go into cocoon. the fuzzy outside is a defense mechanism that lets people and critters know to stay away or else there will be lots of pain! And Who’s This??? Internet has slightly failed me in identifying him so any help from #mothwatchers #ukmoths gratefully received. He (am sure it’s a) perched in the kitchen all morning as we bleared our way thru breakfast (cheesy crumpets mainly, well popular, #homemademarmalade taken a bashing too, tho not with the cheese obv). Quick search tonight brought up #automerisiomoth and #monkeymoth but not enough info to be sure. Used to be scared of moths as a child but this lil furry fuzzy marvel was just instantly likeable and awesome: the detail on his eyebrows (yes, know they’re not really called that) and the fluffiness, like one of those cheap nylon #easterchick decorations, but way more intricate and beautiful. Never known a place like this for moths. Not the big grand slightly menacing ones, just hundreds of little ones, mainly brown and grey. All different, they greet us each morning when we open up the tent, sleepy, they linger and watch. Equally sleepy we bump into stuff an #getthecoffee on. Spent this afternoon battening down for impending #stormellen. So the tent is tied to the trailer which is tied to the car and a zillion clips, #paracord n bungees are in place. Fingers X. Mothy will be fine, plenty of hidey holes to wait it out, just like us and festivals and COVID. Batten down, weather the storm. Fluffy Yellow #facemask optional.
Usually, around this time, I would be posting a new moth.. unfortunately, I have two moths that are one crucial step from being finished. Here pictured are my next two projects: on the left, the male Io moth, and on the right, the Rothschildia erycina moth. I already have the base paint for the wings of the first moth finished (as seen above) but it’ll take at least three more days to get them fully painted and mounted to the moth. So, I’ve just decided to post this little sneak peak. I will touch on this more in the future, but I want to point out the differences between the two moths pictured here. The Rothschild moth is my favorite moth, so the finished product will be more realistic and perhaps poseable. This is quickly apparent when you see these two moths together. Although I’ve tried my hardest in the past to make all the moths realistic, none of the previous moths have had abdomens like this one. Also, none have had abdomen details and patterns! I may try making my moths more like this in the future, but it’s a hard process to get to this stage. It's generally not a good idea to touch caterpillars that have branched spines. They usually contain chemicals that can irritate our skin and cause temporary discomfort and pain. I'm the kind of guy who wants to experience nature even if it's uncomfortable, so I don't listen to the advice of others all the time. This particular caterpillar was walking across a sidewalk at work, on its way to find a pile of leaves to create its cocoon for metamorphosis. These were some of my tests-in-progress for our kids specimen making activity at a few primary schools for Science Week! My tests I made look pretty rough because I wanted to make sure that no matter the skill level or attention span of the child they all walked away feeling confident with an awesome looking moth specimen AND having learnt some science in the process of observing and adding all the moth parts step-by-step!!!! . . There is also going to be an adult specimen workshop with me at the museum later in the month on the weekend (the last Saturday in August) for just $10 thanks to the museum! It's nearly fully booked so give them a call if you want to do a workshop with me!
