I'm very excited to be a part of HIVE artspace's upcoming exhibit All Creatures Great and Small! Just shipped these works off to the gallery yesterday. I really love the mission of this exhibit, celebrating these beings that we share the planet with. A portion of profits go to AASCPA. If you are close to York, Pennsylvania, I encourage you to attend the reception on Friday, May 3. Aside from enjoying animal art from all kinds of artists, AASCPA will be hosting a veg party! It was a joy to package up these particular pieces. I love them dearly and am excited to share them with others. Though, I did find it particularly hard to say goodbye to my little American Toad. He is my absolute favorite, and reminds me of the toad I met who inspired the drawing, while I was kayaking in the Adirondacks. A very green post. My favorite color. Buzz the Steer. I compulsively saved over a thousand medicinal herb seedlings and grew them out on the back porch until they were mature enough to plant out. Finally putting them in the ground at friends houses around town and giving them the chance to spread roots offers such solace. As I dig in the soft earth with bare hands (I love dirty hands!) my mind can’t help but flutter into the future flowering stages of these special spaces and imagine the frenetic biodiversity they will conjure. Grateful for the inspiring spring time magic of gardening and the lessons I continue to learn from such generous plants. They’re so cool! And it’s been so fun to learn so many by name over the years. Sometimes I feel I am becoming more and more plant~like and I hope that is true. Blessed by bees ☺️🐝 That feeling when a tiny bee lands on you 🥰 I wish we could bottle it, and share it with all the people that are scared of bugs. The world would bee a much better place if people had less fear and more respect for insects. Whilst I was watching a patch of woodland flowers in Rock Creek park last week, a wonderful variety of solitary bees were busy foraging. I attempted some photos but most were too fast for me. My patience was rewarded with this visitor - a Cuckoo bee (Nomada sp.). Yes, I’m almost as pale as some of the white flowers, so it may have been a mistake 😂 but it felt like an honour nonetheless. So there I am, crouched down in the dirt, goofily smiling at my hand (IYKYK). Swipe to see this little one having a wash, wiping it’s antenna and doing the most adorable little butt wiggle, as it cleans its abdomen. Ho trovato perfetto l'accostamento con la borsetta a forma di cuore presa in saldo da Piazza Italia (era l'ultima 🥺 ) e in seguito, con la giacca in ecopelle con maniche a sbuffo (presa su Vinted e presentata già qualche post fa). I am always so happy to see various kinds of insects in the garden; my favourites in no particular order are all kinds of bees, bumblebees, butterflies, hoverflies, dragonflies. I even like wasps which get their own watering place in summer. I find it really exciting to watch their behaviour! DE: Da hat sich glatt eine Hummel ins Bild geschummelt! SHE HAS ARRIVED! Blossom is lovely, the first fluttering of a passing butterfly… always a treat, but for me, nothing signifies Spring more than my first BEE-FLY sighting of the year. These flies are Springtime icons. I spotted my first Bee-flies of 2024 last week and I felt the giddy wave of excitement and joy that happens every year. There are always squeals and silliness. This excitement is a combination of knowing it’s the beginning of bug season, and a general outpouring of adoration for these flying fuzz balls. So I dropped to my knees and had a little moment 🥰 (whilst my friends watched on and teased me). Of course, it’s not good news for everyone… at least not if you’re a ground nesting solitary bee! You see, the Dark-edge bee-fly (Bombylius major) is not just a pollinator, she’s also a parasitoid. Targeting the nests of Mining bees, she swoops down to the ground and ‘twerks’ - coating her egg in a dusting of soil (to add some weight to it), then she hovers above the entrance to the bee nest and with great precision - hurls it towards the entrance! Her offspring will later develop within the hosts nest, where the Bee-Fly larva feeds on the immature bees. Brutal but utterly fascinating!
