DAY 4 The entirety of Lyall Bay 2.35km . Another day of enjoying this Welly Shoreline cleanup project with one of my kiddos! Such a perfect time to catch up on everything that’s going on in their worlds. Parenting hack - want to get your teenagers spillin’ the tea? Take them on a litter cleanup! . The beach itself was quite clean but the parking areas around were a disaster. So much takeaway/fast food rubbish, napkins, and single-use drink containers. Ugh! My daughter found a clothespin and improvised a litter picker for the nastiest of the napkins! The homemade bong was an interesting find amongst the rock wall. . To the handful of people that stopped to say thank you, or the man that started applauding when we walked in front of his car in the parking lot, thank you! 3 things I learned from a weekend away in nature…🍃 Recently my partner and I went away to the Victorian high country for a weekend away. The weather was incredible. Food was delicious. And of course the nature around us was breathtaking. Once you step away from the hustle and bustle of a city, everything becomes clear. Here’s some lessons nature taught me: 🚲 Slow down Going for long morning walks or sunset bike rides reminded me to slow down in life and take the time to absorb the beauty of nature around me. It’s been a while since I’ve ridden a bike so that was fun! 🏔️Enjoy the journey Driving on a small curvy mountain road to a ski mountain was thrilling and scary! When we arrived at our destination we felt a little undwerhwlemed and realized we actually enjoyed the journey more than the destination. 🥧 Be spontaneous Being plant based means food options or alternatives aren’t always available especially in more remote areas or towns. But driving home and stopping in a tiny town just before the shop closed…we managed to find only 1 vegan pie left in the food fridge - it’s like it was saved just for us! The point is it’s so important to take time away offline and explore new places. Wool pellet fertilizer, manufactured in Canada, using Canadian wool, is being sold by innovative farms and businesses looking to provide an ecological soil amendment and positive alternative to chemical fertilizers. Part of a circular economy reducing waste and excess greenhouse gas emissions, pure wool pellets provide rich nutrients, enhance soil structure, retain moisture, repel bugs and slugs as well as providing a slow release nitrogen fertilizer. Using an otherwise wasted product, wool pellets reduce irrigation and water run-off and can support water infiltration in drought-prone areas. “The Canadian wool industry has been in crisis for decades with low prices and limited marketing options,” says Anna Hunter, chairperson of the Canadian Wool Collective and owner/operator of Longway Hometead in Manitoba. “As a result, a significant portion of the national clip has been tossed – and with it the carbon sequestration benefits of wool. This is now beginning to change.” Several wool pellet producers are currently in operation from coast to coast. If you know of other pellet mills, please reach out to have them added to the national directory. “Working collaboratively with the wool pellet mill in your region allows farmers to not only ensure that wool is kept out of landfill but also to support local communities, local business, and local jobs,” says Jennifer Osborn, farmer at All Sorts Acres Farm in Ontario, founder of the Upper Canada Fibreshed, and owner/operator of EcoWool Canada. “The benefits for gardeners are also outstanding!
