It was inspired by the #highschoolconfidential #moviecar built by #georgebarris #barriscustoms and this version was built by Glen “Cat” Patrick in Ohio in the early/mid #1980s. Chevrolet never made a three window coupe in the 1946-48 variation hence the extensive chopping and filling of the top and metal work. #barris himself was said to have consulted and assisted Glen as to the #choptop modifications. As a cool little touch, the glove box was signed by Barris. Around 20 years ago Paul Kelly send me a scan of a few mid 1950’s car show photos. Including was a nice photo of the Jesse Lopez 1941 Ford. The photo was taken at a large car park, and dates March ‘56. In the background you could see a few other cars that I had seen before. But there was no info about when or where the photo was taken. A couple of years later I got one more scan taken at the same show. This one was inside a Bill DeCarr folder from the Larry Watson Collection, but also had no info. I could tell from this photo that it must have been a pretty big car show with some very big name cars at the event. Jesse Lopez’s Ford was now owned by Danny Lares, and parked next to it was Louis Bettancourt 1949 Mercury. We can also see Henry Rootlieb’s 1933 Ford, Chuck DeWitt’s 1953 Ford wagon, Buddy Alcorn’s 1950 Mercury, Lyle Lakes’ 1952 Buick, Ronnie Dragoo’s 1954 Mercury and Frank Monteleone’s 1941 Ford hard-top. What an amazing event this must have been. Outdoor show with perfect SoCall weather and a wonderful collection of hot rods and Custom cars, of which quite a few had been featured in the magazines. The original photo was taken with the show stanchions and rope in front of the car. AMX from the TV show "Bancek" by @barriskustom at @barrett_jackson last weekend. ⬇️DETAILS⬇️ This custom 1969 AMC AMX was built by George Barris for the early '70s TV series "Banacek." It is powered by a 390/315hp V8 engine paired with a BorgWarner Shift Command 3-speed automatic transmission. The rear-axle ratio is 3.54 gears. This car had extensive styling modifications done with bold Barris styling. The exterior features a 4.5-inch chopped top, and the front windshield is 2 inches further back. The body was lengthened 18 inches and had a 15-inch front nose extension. It has streamlined lowers from the roofline to the rear bumper, and a matching front louvere grille was added. The body sides feature radiused and sculpted wheel wells with body lines that resembled a 1969 Camaro. Large dramatic chrome full-length side pipes were installed and the Ram Air scoops were molded into the hood to match the lines of the extended front sheet metal. The Barris sculpted body was painted White Murano Pearl on the top surfaces and rustic Tangerine Candy with Copper overtones on the body sides. The car's wheels were upgraded to a set of chrome Cragar SS wheels wrapped in Wide Oval Firestone tires. The brown bucket-seat interior features matching Nauga de dash padding and a carpeted rear compartment. Yesterday I shared some early 1960’s photos of this 1947 Ford Convertible Custom with Barris ties dating back to around 1947. According the stories the car had been restyled by a guy named “Fuzzy” who worked at the Barris Compton Ave Shop. We are not sure if the work was done by the guy I his spare time, or if it was a real Barris Custom. But according Norm Morrison, the owner of the ‘47 Ford in the early 1960’s, it was a Barris Custom. Here are some more photos of the car. Photos how the car looked a couple of years ago photographed by Luke Karosi from @kustomsillustrated magazine, and a few photos from the later part of the 1940’s when the car was freshly restyled. One photo taken next to the Barris Compton Avenue shop, and two photos taken at El mirage. This was the early stage of the car when it still had the fender trim, stock headlights and the fenders had not yet been moulded in and the top and interior were done by the Carson Top Shop. We have no info on who did the work on the car from the first to the second versions. What we know. Restyled for unknown owner around 1947 when the car was near new most likely by Fuzzy at the Barris Shop. Owned by Norm Morrison in the early 1960’s. @dean_ekdahl_ send me a couple of photos he got from a friend some 25 years ago and was wondering if I could help him identify the Ford Custom in the photos. His friend – Norm Morrison – who passed away in the early 2000’s always mentioned that his old ‘47 Ford was a Barris Custom from 1946-47. But Dean was not sure about that, he had not been able to find any other info on it. The photos Dean send of the car were all from the early 1960’s, when Norm owned the car. Norm had mentioned “what a piece of shit” that car was, but he did take photos of it, and did hold on to them until he gave them to Dean 25 years ago. So the car must have meant something to him. When Dean send me the first very small photos I recognised the shape of the padded top, and a few other details, and wondered if it could be the one that was photographed in front of the Barris Compton Ave shop back in 1947, and the same one that George Barris photographed in the early 1960’s. When Dean send me larger versions of the photos I could read the license plate, and it sure was the same car as George photographed in the 1960’s. The great news is that this one is still alive and well. I will share some more and also recent photos of it later. The Snooky Janich 41’ Ford restyled by Barris Kustoms in the late 40’s. The Mallory brothers of Shawnee, Kansas, saved it from the scrap yard in the early 70’s. Posted @withregram • @kermitm2 For Sale: 1950 Mercury. The car was given a black lacquer paint job…then put into dry storage…in the early 70’s. It remained there until I bought it a couple years ago. I have spent the last month getting it running and driving. Buffed out the old lacquer paint. Pulled the original wheels and had them sandblasted/powder coated. Wrapped them in brand new Coker Firestone tires. I put in a new epoxy coated gas tank with new fuel lines. Rebuilt the factory fuel pump. I replaced the whole brake system with new master cylinder, wheel cylinders, new cnc bent steel lines, new hoses and new shoes. Also added new plugs, cap and voltage regulator to get the 255 flat head running smooth. I flushed and changed the oil. It has good oil pressure. Same for coolant. No leaks. Original radiator looks mint. Runs cool. New 6V battery. Car has a static drop. Frame is all original. New shocks all the way around. Three on the tree. Shifts smooth. Doors shut like a brand new car. Floors are perfect. No rust holes at all. This car has never been took apart. It will need a new exhaust system and carb will need to be rebuilt to make it reliable. I bought a kit to do it, but haven’t yet. I figure whoever buys it will add their favorite intake and a couple of Strombergs. All original interior, dash and gauges. All gauges appear to be working correctly. I’ve done all the boring work to get it running and driving. It’s a blank canvas for you to finish. Install your favorite mufflers. Dress the flat head up the way you like. Get the interior done the way you want. Clear title. Love this pic of "The Man" George Barris himself putting the finishing touches on the famous "Surf Woody" 1960's show car. What's cool is the intake set-up, the manifold was an @Offenhauser side by side with two carbs right next to each other. But then Barris mounted TWO Paxton superchargers one to feed each carb. Mind Blown The last feature from Woody’s 5th annual Waterfront Car Show is a super rare and unusual Barris Kustom. The ESSO Oldsmobile Toronado 67-X One of only four that George Barris was commissioned to build for the Canadian World Expo of 1967 sponsored by Esso. The chassis was stretched 15 inches and the car is just over twenty feet long. The four coach built cars were given away in a promotion for the event. The car pictured is the only one still in the family of the original prize winner, Cliff Hackett. Cliff’s son who is the current caretaker was kind enough to bring it out for the event. Two were originally gold, two bronze and one red that Barris built for himself. Currently this car and two in Canada are the only three with known whereabouts. There are rumors that one unrestored example is in private hands in the southern US. Lastly, these are controversially referred to as Barris’ ugliest work. The ’41 Ford padded topped convertible in these photos was build at the Barris Custom Shop in 1947 for owner Harold Larsen. The car looks really fantastic with a heavy chopped windshield, flowing padded top, filled center grille, perfect stance with wide whites, Sombrero hubcaps, fender skirts and Appleton Spotlight. A perfect mid/late 40’s Barris Custom. 3 of the 4 photos show come from Ralph Adams. Ralph owned the the car for a few years. In 1951 Ralph traded his nice 1937 Ford humpback sedan for the ’41 Ford with Bob Ruble from South Gate, California. Bob bought the car from the original owner Harold Larsen in early 1950, but in 1951, he needed a larger car for his new family. Bob Ruble never did any work on the car, so when he got it in 1951 it was just as how it looked when the Barris Shop had finished it. With one small exception, the cowl mounted antenna was replaced with a newer type and mounted on top of the drivers front fender. The holes were filled in with plugs, but not welded. Ralph Adams later sold the car to some guys from the east coast who drove the car to the east coast. That was the last he ever heard about it. In 2010 Palle Johansen and myself went on a research trip from Denmark to the US to find out as much as we could about the Jack Stewart 1941 Ford. On this trim we met a few times with original owner Jack Stewart who told us some incredible stories about his '41 Ford, and about the late 1940's Custom Car scene. Here is one great story Jack told us about his friendship with George Barris. Jack mentioned that him and George Barris where very good friends and enjoyed life. They lived life to the max like we now use to say. Together they went on many trips. Including skiing weekends into the mountains and of coarse there where alway ladies involved in these trips. Both George and Jack where very much lady chasers. When Jack and George went out partying in the weekend Jack usually stayed away from the booze, but George loved to drink, and sometimes drank a bit too much to be able to drive home. Many times young Jack (around 21)jumped behind the steering wheel of George's 1941 Buick Custom and drove back home in the middle of the night. Jack was working long days and was not really used to this partying yet. He had a lot of trouble staying awake with George sitting next to him with open mouth snoring like crazy. Back in the days most gas stations where closed during the night but Jack soon learned that the water hoses where still operating. So at nearly every gasstation on the way back home Jack stopped, got out of the car and splashed water in his face to stay awake. He would jump up and down and ran around the car a couple of times to get fresh and awake to be sure not to fall asleep on the next stint.
