I’m sharing one of my favorite photos from my #VintageLosAngeles slide collection. This is La Cienega and Santa Monica in 1972. This photo screams early 70s so severely that it it almost looks like a scene from Adam 12 or Columbo. There’s La Cienega Lanes on the right, which later became Flipper’s Roller Boogie (today it’s a CVS). On the left is Jim Morrison territory. You can see the Alta Cienega Motel, where Jim often stayed, and the Phone Booth, a strip club next door that Jim often patronized. And look at that sea of billboards. It’s almost prehistoric to see cigarette ads now. I love the one advertising Raquel Welch and Sid & Marty Krofft at the Hilton in Las Vegas, and the car ad for a Buick Century. You can also see the Petersen building (which was torn down about 6 years ago) and Westview Towers with the Googie roof. At Holloway you can see a Spanish style house (today, that’s a 7/11). This photo was taken by the great Frank Zinn. I’m so very grateful to be the curator of a many of his amazing images documenting the late 60s and early 70s in around Los Angeles. Most taken around sunset strip and the West Hollywood area. I’ll be sharing more soon. My dream is to publish a book of just his slides. Most of them are on published at this point. I must release them some day.

Looking East down Wilshire Blvd., 1961. The focal point is the under-construction Travelers Insurance Company building. The 22-story high rise was designed by Welton Becket and Associates, and located at 3600 Wilshire. Dedicated in October 1961, the $12M Travelers Building tower became the tallest office building in the city. Tenants included Merrill Lynch, Pierce, Fenner & Smith Inc., and Coldwell Banker. The Koreatown structure still looms over the area. The cafe on the corner of Wilshire and Serrano was Manning's Cafeteria -- sadly, the entire lot was razed (including California Bank and Lytton Savings) to make way for Beneficial Plaza in 1965 -- designed by Skidmore, Owings and Merrill, the new HQ for Beneficial was completed in 1966. . . . #losangeleshistory #wilshireblvd #1960s #weltonbeckett #1960sarchitecture #vintagelosangeles #koreatownla

Super rare 35mm shot of PInk Pussycat dancer. Sadly, no provenance to go with this lovely lass, so her name and story remain unknown. However, I am happy to go out on a limb and assume she rarely, if ever, received a speeding ticket. --- Formerly known as Dolly's Bowery Cafe in the early 1950s, the saucy club billed itself as the "hottest show in town". It also operated briefly as the Dawn Club. The West Hollywood nite spot became The Seville toward the end of the decade (Chico Hamilton and Miles Davis played there in 1959). That lasted until around 1960, when the venue became the Pink Pussycat. No less than actress Barbara Nichols was at the club in October 1961 when burglars broke into her home and made off with a mink stole and jewelry. Other burlesque clubs in town included: Club El Rancho, Jazzville USA, Largo, New Follies Burlesk, Strip City, Tiffany Club, York Club and Zomba Cafe. By 1979, it was over. Tonight on @spectrumnews1socal my report on the history & future of the old Westside Pavilion airs at 9pm. I recall years of shopping here in the 80s and 90s. Especially for back to school clothes. Back then it was so popular it was used for movies and music videos such as “Beverly Hills 90210, and Tom Petty’s FREE FALLIN’ Tom’s lyrics may have been a glimpse into the future because by the 2000s, many malls across the country were in free fall and permanently closing. We may be experiencing “dead mall” culture, but thankfully this structure has been saved and is becoming a new medical hub owned by UCLA. Their goal is to help reshape the future of science innovation & exploration. Parts of the structure will also be transformed into a cultural and performance space as part of the UCLA Research Park. Bravo!!! 👏 Thank you to @fine_by_design of the @laconservancy for talking with me about the Pavillion’s history and to Doctor Roger Wakimoto, UCLA’S Vice Chancellor For Research, who gave me exclusive access into the building currently under construction. Happy Record Store Day! 🎙️ I don’t own the matchbook shown. Didn’t grab it quick enough this week on eBay but it’s a great one! The first photo & info (after the matchbook images) is from @alisonmartino ; RCA Victor, (which stood for the Radio Corporation of America) was once located at 1510 North Vine Street - between NBC Studios and the Brown Derby. Photo date is 1953. Recording artists at this time included: Freddy Martin, Sammy Kaye, Spike Jones, Perry Como, Vaughn Monroe, Tony Martin and Tommy Dorsey. And who could forget RCA’s mascot, Nipper? He wasn’t a talking dog, nor a singing dog, his fame came from listening to his master’s voice on the Victrola. His prominent appearance was on every RCA Victor record label from 1929 until 1969 and assured Nipper’s place in the pantheon of canine celebrities. Let’s get up close and personal with the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel’s classic neon signs… They didn’t always look like this, however. When the hotel opened on May 15, 1927, it had no rooftop signs at all. Late 1930’s photos show scaffold signage much as it appears today, except that the word “Hollywood” was situated on top. By the 1950’s, “Hollywood” was gone. According to writer Helena Smith of LonelyPlanet.com, the present signs were among at least 185 neon signs restored under the guidance of Adolfo Nodal, longtime manager of L.A.’s Department of Cultural Affairs. Nodal, who retired from the city in 2000, has since spearheaded similar restoration efforts in his native Cuba.
