Fighting a ghost! Batman: Dark Age Issue 2 Review Russell’s clever twist on Batman’s origin continues to be entertaining. There’s a lot of similarities to how Bruce originally became Batman; however, that sprinkle of realism is what’s so compelling. In the main universe, Bruce traverses the entire planet for different trainers to help him become the Caped-Crusader. Here, there is only one trainer, Ras Al-Ghul, and Bruce didn’t seek him out. Bruce was shipped off to Vietnam in exchange for his prison sentence. Instead of being a swim coach like he expected, he is sent to the front lines with fellow compatriots Oliver Queen and Maxwell Lord. Ras Al-Ghul is the one who leads the men and trains them. In turn, Bruce is training to become Batman without meaning to. This unique take on Bruce’s traveling the world is really clever. He still becomes the Batman with the help of new allies and training, but adding that realism makes this origin new and refreshing, while still respecting the caped-crusader’s history. The natural evolution of Bruce becoming Batman is delivered perfectly. Russell’s script has great pacing and a nice touch of humor here and there. The storytelling is tight, making for one of the best Batman comics in the long while. As always, the Allreds’ artwork is stunning and brings Russell’s script to life. The jungles of Vietnam are detailed very well. They pop right off the page amongst the dark sky. Speaking of, most of the comic takes place at night and the starry nights look so beautiful. It sets the tone perfectly for Bruce’s time in Vietnam. The Batsuit is well designed. There’s great choreography throughout. A distanza di anni, Mariko Tamaki rispolvera questo titolo per costruire una storia nella nuova Arkham Tower, costruita in sostituzione dell'Asylum ma lo fa al plurale, dato che più che Batman, i protagonisti di questa storia sono i membri della bat-family. 🦇 La storia si struttura su 12 capitoli ambientati all'interno dell'Arkham Tower dove si sta orchestrando una grossa truffa ai danni del sindaco e di Gotham City. Il truffatore Tobias Wear promette nuove cure per i malati psichiatrici di Gotham, portando risultati all'apparenza sorprendenti, anche se alcuni personaggi, tra cui la bat-family, sentendo odore di bruciato iniziano ad indagare scoprendo un giro di droga e raggiri che porteranno al caos più totale all'interno della torre. 🦇 Mariko Tamaki stranamente scrive un arco narrativo tutto sommato carino e godibile, al contrario dei suoi lavori precedenti che avevo trovato deludenti. Il ritmo che tiene la storia è buono, i personaggi sono ben centrati e gli avvenimenti spingono al proseguo della lettura. 🦇 Ai disegni troviamo tre artisti tra i quali spicca decisamente più di tutti il talentuoso Ivan Reis con il suo tratto pulito e dettagliato.
