Beautiful rose on my walk this morning! This was the best photo I could get. Had a shelf-tastrophe this week so I had to rearrange a lot of my belongings, which meant peering into boxes I’ve only peeled into briefly since I moved in a year ago. Threw away some things, have a donation box of other things, wept a little because life is hard and leaving behind people and losing pets and moving around a bunch and changing jobs leaves a discernible trail of both joy and sadness. Learning and healing and overcoming takes a toll at times. There’s discovery of forgotten seminars, evidence of so much try: trying something new, trying to become better (whatever that means), trying again, trying harder, trying not to try so much and just be. Old boxes are full of despair and hope. I cast out some of the despair, and hold onto hope. All because a shelf broke, over laden by the past. #beautysavesus

I am grateful for the beauty in the world. Can you imagine if beauty didn’t exist? The beauty of nature, of art, of poetry, and music. The rain on a leaf, the sun on the water, the wind, Sunsets and sunrise, Every tree. Your pet’s eyes. The warmth in your smile, the softness of your skin, Your tenderness, your sweetness. Your strength, your courage, your vulnerability, your creativity, your hopes and all of your dreams. A kiss, Laughter, Tears. Flowers. Their petals. Their scent. Babies’ toes, Gummy, toothless smiles. A sleeping child, Cuddles and tickles, And the beauty of your parent’s hands. * Beauty saves us from the madness, from the pain, the confusion, the uncertainties. It brings us back to what’s true. It is the unbounded, generous expression of spirit, of energy. It is proof that love exists. Yes, I am grateful for the beauty in this world. Very grateful indeed. . . . #gratitude #thankful #grateful #beautyiseverywhere #beautysavesus #beautyistruth #beautyislove #happythanksgiving #beautyremastered

Bob Dylan turns 80 today. Saw him perform in Tempe, Arizona in 1979 on the controversial “Gotta Serve Somebody” tour. The audience booed and screamed for him to play the old songs. He sang like a man possessed. He was magnificent. I thought then he had to be at least 60. He was only 38. #beautysavesus

#weneedmorebeautyintheworldrightnow @lynnnewman101 Day Seven of Seven 4-6-21 Piece #7 Canvas and paint Lynn has been my friend for thirty years and I adore her. (And her family, too.) She's an artist whose creations take my breath away. I never know what I'm going to see next when she starts to work. Here are some words from her about the seven pieces of art you'll see over the next week: "For me, art is about process not a product. Creativity allows me to connect to what I call 'point zero' - that place of presence, flow, and complete permission to be in the zone without the need for meaning/interpretation or control. I don't name my paintings. I prefer to paint intuitively, curious about the mystery, the magical unknown, without needing to define or understand anything." Thank you, Lynn Newman, for sharing your amazing art pieces with us this week! #beautysavesus

#weneedmorebeautyintheworldrightnow Stacy Carroll Day Seven of Seven 3-30-2021 “Where the Oaks Have Yet to Meet the Pines” September 2019 Here's what Stacey has to say about the photo: "California old western road into the Sierras. Climbed this mountain road so many times and the beauty always fills my soul. Every photo in any season makes you feel like time stands still on this old road." Stacy and I have known each other forever. We did plays together in school and our families were very close. Stacy was an actor for a while (a very good one) and then decided to go back to school. #weneedmorebeautyintheworldrightnow Stacy Carroll Day Six of Seven 3-29-2021 “Chicago” December 2019 Artist: Anish Kapoor - Cloud Gate aka The Bean 2006 Chicago public art. Here's what Stacey has to say about the photo: "We happened to be in Chicago when the Bean was installed in its incomplete form during the Millennium Park grand opening celebration in 2004. The welded stainless-steel plates had yet to be polished to their present-day seamless beauty and it was stunning and beautiful. I took photo after photo, knowing that this was a moment in history, but alas, later that day I accidentally reset the new digital camera and the photos were deleted. Gone. Of course, who wants their photo taken before they’re ready?" Stacy and I have known each other forever. We did plays together in school and our families were very close. #weneedmorebeautyintheworldrightnow Stacy Carroll Day Three of Seven 3-26-2021 ““Los Angeles Moves a Rock” July 2015 Artist: Michael Heize – Levitated Mass 2012 This photo has a real story behind it, as Stacy tells it: "I was so happy when I saw how this photo turned out. It just captures the grit and imagination of the artist who first imagined this in 1969. The rock developed a huge following as it traveled 105 miles to LACMA in 2012 and was greeted with a crowd of cheering supporters as it pulled up on Wilshire Boulevard in the middle of the night. Quite a rock. Public art for all to enjoy. According to LACMA, “…Due to its massive size, the boulder required a complex and thoroughly reviewed transportation process from its quarry to the museum, a distance of approximately 105 miles. Its transportation took place over the course of roughly eleven nights which began on February 28, 2012. The transporter carrying the boulder travelled on a specially designated route—covering four counties (Riverside, San Bernardino, Orange, and Los Angeles) and twenty-two cities—with movement happening only at night. At 340 tons, the boulder was one of the largest megaliths moved since ancient times.” Stacy and I have known each other forever. We did plays together in school and our families were very close. This trail kept us going during our COVID quarantine. We lived in the Sierras from March until mid-June and didn’t see a soul on the trails. Probably didn’t notice the pixies and sprights that inevitably hang around and cause mischief.' Stacy and I have known each other forever. First she was a teacher and then a school principal. Now she and her husband travel and spend time with their sons. And she takes awesome photographs. Here's why: "I’ve always loved taking photographs and capturing beauty; it’s been a pastime since I took a class in high school and developed my own grainy photos of our Irish Setter. The photos shared here are personal and reflect a time, place or event that mean something to me. I see photos in my head wherever we go, and I probably have 50+ pictures of cocktails and our cat from different angles. Lots of beauty in cocktails and cats." #weneedmorebeautyintheworldrightnow Bob Schrock Day Six of Seven 3-22-2021 "The Sky" Bob was an actor in New York City, then a writer, then a director. I met him in Los Angeles in the early 1980's. He's rather famous for creating and directing one of the most produced musicals in the world, NAKED BOYS SINGING. Now, years later, after moving to Puerto Vallarta in Mexico with his husband Peter Lempert around November of 2016 (guess why?) he has turned his prodigious talents to painting. I love his work. It's so alive. Here's a little about Bob, in his own words: "There is so much inspiration living in Puerto Vallarta. I want to paint everything I see. The colors, the life, the architecture, the people are all an inspiration. Not to mention Banderas Bay. I like to paint pictures that tell a story, have some movement, action and color. I also like to paint detail in my work." You can see more of Bob Shrock's painting on his FB page. https://www.facebook.com/schrockbob #beautysavesus

#weneedmorebeautyintheworldrightnow Bob Schrock Day Five of Seven 3-21-2021 "Joby" This painting is of Bob's good friend, Joby. The painting was an experiment of transferring an ink jet print to a canvas board and then painting over it.

#weneedmorebeautyintheworldrightnow Sara Wade Gray Day Seven of Seven 3-16-2025 "Snowy Egret" Sara is a longtime friend whose photographs are so heartfelt and lovely they haunt my dreams Here's a little about Sara: "When my son, Taylor, was a young teen, his father and I went through a difficult divorce. Right about that time, Taylor found a passion for photography. Since he was not able to drive yet, I became his taxi driver. We spent the next four years during his high school, exploring the Bay Area and photographing it. It was a healing experience for both of us. I had stumbled on a form of expression that spoke to me and satisfied that ever-present creative itch. As much as I love landscape, portraiture, editorial, and nature photography, I have also been pushing the boundaries of traditional digital processing by manipulating my shots so I achieve a more painterly effect. This is what I love to do. If I can evoke emotion when you look at my work, then I’ve accomplished something." Sara and her son Taylor are now professional photographers. #weneedmorebeautyintheworldrightnow @margarettperry Day Seven of Seven. 3-9-2021 "waiting" watercolor and watercolor pencil on cold pressed 100% cotton paper 10 x 7 Margarett is one of the best theater directors I know. About a year, I noticed she was posting photos of her art. Here's her story. "When New York City closed down last March and my theatre directing jobs evaporated, I joined a watercolor group on Zoom. I had never painted before, but each week I would paint along with the group and try to reflect my experience in watercolor. A kind of journal of images emerged—images of my experience. Playing with the paint and watching the water and paint interact delighted me. And then, much to my amazement, two of my pieces were licensed by the New York Historical Society—what a thrill to see the images I painted put on mugs, magnets, journals, pint glasses (my favorite!) and even face masks. You can imagine how this encouraged me to keep painting. It has been a joy to play with the water and the paint and see what emerges. And I'm always gleeful when someone responds to my work." The narrative may involve a mother trying to maintain her sanity, or Maori sailors navigating thousands of ocean miles in canoes. But there's always a story in there somewhere." This is the most powerful book I’ve read in a decade! The prose, poetry, and earned wisdom are haunting and illuminating. @alexander_solzhenitsyn is a Russian writer who helped defeat Stalin and his depraved gulags with his pen! It’s only 38 pages but it will wrench you this way and that as it wrestles with the concepts of art, not being a complicit in the lie, the language of villains, and the audacity of believing truth “will out” even though all hope should be gone. We are discussing this at @verum_fabula_fellowship @drinklingscoffee for the next few Monday’s at 7pm. Come on down and wrestle this terrifying beautiful text with us!! . . . #gulags #solzhenitsyn #truth #beautysavesus #communism #stalingulag #stalin #dostoyevsky #literacymatters #literature #hauntingprose

Judy has raised making mats and floor pieces into, pun intended, an art form. https://ronbarron.zenfolio.com https://www.goodreads.com/author/show/300044.Judy_Barron #beautysavesus

#WeNeedMoreBeautyInTheWorldRightNow Masha Mikaelovna Tikunov Last Day of Seven. "Untitled" I met Masha a year ago when she began commenting on the "beauty" posts. Then I discovered that in addition to her other talents and life experiences (fascinating chef, a life of travel, and other things) she was also an artist. Look her up on Facebook page, friend her, and you'll get access to a gallery of her paintings and drawings. Thank you for all the lovely paintings this week, Masha! #beautysavesus
