That CD included music by The Shangri-Las and other girl groups that were successful in their time, but didn’t achieve the same level of success as The Supremes. ✨ Amy⚓️ was already familiar with music by The Ronettes, The Crystals, and The Shirelles thanks to her love of film. Long before her music career began, Amy⚓️ was listening to these artists’ music on The ‘Dirty Dancing’ soundtrack - a soundtrack that she praised and shared her love for many times during her Frank💕era. Ex fan de 60s. Homage to Holly Golightly. When I was 21 I started highlighting my hair and only wearing black. I even styled my flat based on the whole aesthetic of Breakfast at Tiffany’s and started wearing 4711 cologne just like Holly Golightly. What a cliche. I didn’t really like the film apart from the fashion in it, though I had liked the book, growing up mainly on account of it was short and I’ve always had trouble reading. Endless capacity to write but limited ability to read unless it really interested me. I thought it was beautifully written. Maybe I’ve some attention issues…but anyway, it was one of the only vhs tapes I had when I first left boarding school and lived somewhere as an adult for the first time and there was no internet or tv reception (2003). I used to just run it in the background when I was doing chores, a bit like having the radio on. There is so much not working in our current cultural narrative about BT but there were such limited cultural references available to you back then. It was very powerful to me. There was pop music, alternative music, record shops and downloads were only just beginning. It feels like another world. It was such hard work to find the stuff that inspired you. I had about three vhs tapes, and that was one of them. And the whole aesthetic bled into me as I was forming my sense of self as a young adult. I think that was probably about 50 percent of the GP aesthetic. I think the whole thing is bored and tired and it even was when I found it but you know what? I still love a beehive. And I kind of liked making Audrey Hepburn go New Rave. Like how Edie Sedgwick made Audrey her own and I also wanted to be Edie Sedgwick, too.
