Techniques December . . . Last day..and Merry Christmas! . . Beethoven’s Op. 109 and Op. 111 have long passages with continuous trills, sometimes in both hands multiple voices, in the most magnificent way. Trills in classical sonata are usually used at the end of a phrase, to make a cadence. But trills become much more integral to the musical ideas and structures in Beethoven’s late works. The high registered, shimmery trills in Op. 109 and Op. 111 are almost ethereal. To me they sound like a bridge between heaven and earth.. an oscillation of hope, did pair, and resignation..making peace with oneself. Voicing the melody while continuing the long trill can be a challenge. Sometimes you have to momentarily stop the trill to play the melody, but how you listen and create the continuation befor and after can be helpful. Also working “with” the keys, not against the keys, with light arm motion and touch can help. Reading through Book 2 (and my practice schedule for the new year) gave me some thoughts..and I’m changing my unrealistically ambitious plan for this month. Many essential techniques in Beethoven's sonatas reaplear, but there are a few really interesting techniques to discuss in Book II. So I’ll discuss the two interesting techniques in Op .31-1 today; 2 unusual techniques in Waldstein and Op. 54 on December 21; and the long trills + melody in late sonatas on December 22. Techniques December . . Piano techniques in 32 Beethoven piano sonatas. Day 16- #moonlightsonata and Happy Birthday Beethoven! . . . . There's a lot to consider in this hauntingly beautiful (and most famous!) movement. Beethoven was revolutionary in many ways, including his conception of sounds and sonorities. He indicated in the beginning of this movement that it should be played "delicatissimente e sordino" and again "sempre pp e senza sordino," which means without dampers.(=use the damper pedal). On a modern piano, it sounds just too muddled to hold it throughout the movement. But you can imagine what kind of magical and mysterious sound he was looking for on his piano, which probably had quite different sound palette. I vividly remember my doctorate (yes, I am a doctor!!) exam when one of my committee members asked me about how one should approach the long pedal marking in his concerto No. 3, second movement's opening measures. The point of that long pedal is almost more about the moment when it is lifted- it's like magic! And the color and depth of the blurry recitative section in "Tempest" sonata is also magical and intriguing. Much to consider about voicing, sound quality, and the timing of the pedal. Also it's "Adagio," but in cut-time, so the tempo is generally tkae not too slow. I also watched a video by a professor at Mozarteum saying the 9th interval of the end of the opening melodic line to be divided/ partly taken with the LH, which is what I tried today. :) . . . #moonlightsonata #beethoven250 #happybirthdaybeethoven #bthvn2020

Techniques December . . Piano techniques in Beethoven’s 32 Piano in 31 days! Day 15: Op. 27-1, Last movement . . Op. 27-1 and Op. 27-2 are both “sonata quasi una fantasia,” with lyrical and slower first movements (although 27-1 has fast section within) and virtuosic last movement. I played it when I was a master’s student..and it’s interesting to see I used a different fingering back then. I also suggest practicing the left hand blocked (not broken), and also holding the repeated note (bottom) and moving the top part to see how your wrist and elbow should move and follow. She is a serious amateur pianist with a doctorate degree in Instructional systems and technolgy. She's currently a Psychometrician and teaches at FSU's education department while being a mom of 2. She has been working on this sonata (all movements) now for about 2 months, and today we worked on how to make the tremolo better and how to approach the quick forte chords, continued from last week's lesson. Here are some suggestions and concepts that helped her - Fast action at the fingertips (like "quick pinching", without getting forceful or heavy), not dropping with Renee hands, playing with relaxed arm, thinking more with direction and harmonic motion rather than each 16th notes, and not playing into the key too much with the tremolo. I'll also comment my thoughts on the 3rds fingering in the second movement (on the second photo). Enjoy! It’s also very charming and cute (which is rare in Beethoven, in my opinion). The second movement of this sonata reminds me of the “Syncopated Clock” by Leroy Anderson (Thanks @tjtucker!), and the last movement has a passage very similar to another movement in an earlier sonata. Piano techniques in Beethoven’s 32 Piano Sonatas Actually DAY9/10!: Op. 14-1 in E Major. I think this is one of the least familiar ones among the 32. It has humor, charm, lyricism, and just the right amount of virtuosity. The closing theme of the first mvt is similar to the Op.14-2, 2nd mvt, which reminds me of an orchestra work I heard on a CD my mom gave me when I was about 10-11 years old. Gosh, Op. 13 is such a great piece and there are so many things to talk about! I really need to learn and perform this..(only learned the first movement in middle school, but never the whole sonata), but I’m going to focus on the second movement today. And before I talk about the second movement, I am posting another piece that is in the same key and same texture as the Pathétique second movement. Who’s the composer? (비창 2악장과 너무나 비슷한 이 곡의 작곡가는 누구일까요?!:)) . . ...I’ll post the answer in comment later. . . Anyways..the second movement is one of Beethoven’s most beautiful works with a gorgeous texture and memorable melody. It focuses on voicing and legato. I’ll talk about voicing in another sonata with a practice tip later. The first movement has the famous, almost rock-and-roll like passage with broken octaves. The last movement is so gorgeous..and has many scales (c minor harmonic scale!) combined with broken chords and arpeggios. But my current mood is very dark and troubled like the second movement..(too many last minute dramas!!)..anyways, it has a very scary opening (many of Beethoven Sonatas have uncomfortable or very exposed openings) with octaves in piano Dynamics, followed by many broken inteevals, leaps, chords, and more octaves and broken octaves.
