This drawing is the third one directly inspired by a picture from the book by Brassaï: “Paris de nuit” (Paris by night) showing the Pont Royal which stands on the way to the Pont de Solferino and the Grand Palais.: " It is captioned as follows: “The shine of a lamppost highlights the stones of the Royal Bridge, bitten and washed out by the rain". Brassaï's pictures are an inexhaustible source of inspiration for me, and I think this is just the beginning of a long series. As for the vehicle overlooking the anglerfish, I took as an example a vehicle created in 1891 by the French car manufacturing company Panhard & Levassor. Hi everybody! (Version française dans les commentaires 🇫🇷).You may have noticed that it's been a long while since I haven’t posted a finished drawing. For about two years now, I've felt like having more and more trouble focusing on a drawing. It's hard to explain but I think it's mainly due to an overflow of ideas that I can't channel properly. Focusing only on one illustration for several weeks (or even months) while my brain is teeming with new ideas is very frustrating for me. So, as soon as I feel a bit weary, and as I don't want to get repelled with the illustration I'm working on, I start creating another one. Then another. And yet another! And although it can be quite exhilarating at first to have so many projects in progress, not having a finished drawing and therefore no “result” over a long period of time can become disheartening. Especially when I see the work of other artists who are constantly posting incredible (and moreover finished!) illustrations. So, to avoid this feeling of unfinished work that has been weighing on me over the last few months, I’ve decided to set myself a goal: not to start a new drawing until I have finished at least half of all the ones I started during the year 2023-2024. To motivate myself even more, I told myself that I was going to make a post so that it's official (and I really have no other choice!). Thank you for your patience and your support 🖤. A arctic fox in the Tuileries Garden! They’ve both put on their winter coat for the occasion. Under the influence of Catherine de Médicis in 1564, this beautiful garden was landscaped in the Italian style at the same time as the Tuileries Palace was being built. One century later, Louis XIV and Colbert, his minister, directed André Le Nôtre to redesign it completely. Despite a few changes, it still looks as it did at that time and stand out as the oldest formal garden in Paris. In the background of my drawing is the Flore Pavillon. Initially attached to the Tuileries Palace, it also became part of the Louvre Palace in 1860 when Napoleon III decided to combine these two royal residences into a single building. Despite the destruction of the Tuileries Palace which burned down in 1871, the Flore Pavillion still stand today, together with the Marsan Pavilllon as one of the two end pieces of the Louvre Palace (@museelouvre). Ce dessin a été l’occasion de rendre un petit hommage à la plus ancienne chocolaterie-confiserie de Paris : À La Mère de Famille. Fondée en 1761 au 35, rue du Faubourg Montmartre par Pierre-Jean Bernard, il faudra attendre plus de cinquante ans avant qu’elle n’acquiert une véritable renommée. En 1807, Jean-Marie Bridault, le gendre du fondateur qui avait entre-temps repris l’affaire, décède. Sa femme, Marie-Adélaïde Bridault, se retrouve alors seule avec ses quatre enfants. Afin d’assurer leur subsistance, elle prend la tête de l’épicerie. Elle s’entoure de nouveaux fournisseurs et décide de proposer des produits originaux et de qualité supérieure. En 1810, Grimod de la Reynière, père de la critique gastronomique, loue dans son guide culinaire l’Almanach des Gourmands les qualités de la jeune et jolie veuve épicière. « La Mère de Famille » connaît alors un succès qui ne cessera de croître. Aujourd’hui, seizes boutiques @alameredefamille parsèment la capitale. Mais la boutique historique reste, selon moi, la plus spectaculaire. Intacte depuis la fin du XIXe siècle, c’est un bijou de la Belle Epoque qui s’étend sur deux étages. Inktober Day 29 : Massive 🕷 (French translation in comments) The return of the Catacomb Spider in full size. For this drawing, I was inspired by the story of Gashadokuro also nicknamed “the hungry skeleton”. Coming from Japanese mythology, it is part of the Yōkai family. It is most often depicted as a giant skeletal specter with a hunched back whose body is made of bones stolen from the corpses of war or famine victims. In another version it would have been born from decaying bodies which had not been buried. Unable to rest and consumed by resentment, they would take the shape of this monster to take revenge. In Paris, at the start of World War II, many metro stations had to be closed to the public. Neglected, left useless, I wonder if the soul of one of these ghost stations would not have gradually turned into one of these creatures. The shame of having been rejected may have incited it to hide into the darkest part of the catacombs. For more than half a century, it would have been trying to soothe its loneliness by feeding on the skulls and bones at hand. But I doubt that this will satisfy it much longer. Inktober Day 10: Fortune 🐉✨️ (French translation in comments !) I decided to take advantage of Inktober to get back to some drawings that I had left aside a little too long. Here’s the Dragon of the Pont au Change. Although there are traces of a bridge which existed before the Roman presence, it was officially built under the name “Grand-Pont” for the first time in the 9th century. Its current name comes from the money changers or “currency exchange brokers” who settled there and had the function of changing currencies. Money changers but also jewelers and goldsmiths whose shops were so close together that the Seine could no longer be seen from the bridge. No one really knows when the dragon appeared. Some people say that attracted by the gold and the wealth that were accumulating, he went up the Seine to the bridge to make its home. Others argue that the beast, present since Antiquity, was awakened by the greed of men. Regardless, it was customary to drop part of one's gains into the water every year to satisfy the monster's appetite. But beware of bad payers! Having been destroyed several times by the floods of the Seine, many people saw in those repeated disasters the manifestation of the creature's wrath. Its last reconstruction dates back to 1858, during the reign of Napoleon III. Since then, the money changers have deserted the place and the bridge seems to be holding firm. Did the dragon finally go back to sleep? I wonder what would happen if one day, a passerby accidentally dropped a few coins into the water. Inktober Day 4 : Dodge 🐊 The crocodile finally finished for the occasion! From Paris to New York, the urban legend which tells that crocodiles abandoned by their owner haunt the sewers is still persistent. But do you know that on March 7, 1984, the legend became reality? On that day, Parisian sewer workers reported to the firefighters the presence of a suspicious animal seen twice under rue du Pont-Neuf. When they arrived on the site, the firefighters noticed that it was a female Nile crocodile measuring approximately 70 cm. After being captured without incident, it was immediately transferred to the menagerie of the Jardin des Plantes. According to the veterinarian, the heat of the sewers and the presence of many rats helped the animal to survive for several months. When this occurred, it was a great shock for the Parisians and this event further fueled the rumor that there was an underground corridor under constant police watch. Widespread in the community of garbage collectors, it claims that at the end of this corridor, there is a path which leads to a place infested with hungry crocodiles... Arrivés sur place, les pompiers constatent qu’il s’agit d’un crocodile du Nil femelle d’environ 70 cm. Capturée sans incident, elle est aussitôt transférée à la ménagerie du Jardin des Plantes. D’après le vétérinaire, la chaleur des égouts et la présence de multiples rats, a permis à l’animal de survivre durant plusieurs mois. C’est un dessin que j’ai imaginé et dessiné, il y a plus de cinq ans. Et je crois qu’il a été l’un des plus pénibles à faire car j’ai vraiment peur de ces (grosses) bestioles. Vous n’imaginez pas les cauchemars que j’ai pu faire durant toute la période du dessin et de l’encrage. Mais avec le temps, j’ai appris à l’apprécier. [EN] Back to the Cabaret du Chat Noir! Did you know that there had been not only one Cabaret du Chat Noir but three? The first one was founded in 1881 by Rodolphe Salis at 84, boulevard Rochechouard. A meeting place for the Parisian smart set and incarnation of the bohemian spirit of the late 19th century, it was there that he raised the name "Chat Noir" to the rank of an artistic and cultural icon. Buoyed by his success, Rodolphe Salis opened a second establishment in 1885, at 12, rue de Laval. Two years passed, new cabarets appeared and the Chat Noir lost its influence and appeal. Decaying and affected by illness, Salis eventually gave up and sold his cabaret. He died shortly after and with him so did the Black Cat. Yet in 1907, Jehan Chagot, with the consent of Salis’widow, created a third Chat Noir at 68, boulevard de Clichy. This is the one I used as a reference based on a postcard dating back to 1909. With this drawing, I have finally completed the diptych I have been craving to make for so long: an overview and a close-up. [EN] Hello! I am happy to present you this finished drawing, at last. It took me much longer than expected, which explains my absence. So here is my reinterpretation of a famous photograph by Brassaï from his book "Paris by Night". I hope you’ll enjoy this funny nocturnal encounter. At first, I wanted to write a dialogue that explained the relationship between these two characters. A discussion that implied a secret meeting between a police inspector and his informant. A not very discreet informant who clumsily tries to play a secret agent (because all secret agents have a hat, it's well known!) and thereby ruins the little camouflage he had. Finally, I preferred not to write it in order to leave a freer interpretation of this drawing. Because this illustration could very well tell the story of a poor man pursued by a secret admirer who is a little too intrusive. Or even an amateur and hat thief who attacks onlookers after dark? I'll let you tell me which story you prefer. If you have any other ideas, please let me know! 🐒🎩✨️ [FR] Hello ! Je suis heureuse de vous présenter enfin ce dessin terminé. Voici donc ma réinterprétation d’une célèbre photographie de Brassaï issue de son livre « Paris de Nuit ». J’espère que vous apprécierez cette drôle de rencontre nocturne. Au début, je voulais écrire un dialogue qui expliquait la relation entre ces deux personnages. Une discussion qui laissait entendre un rendez-vous secret entre un inspecteur de police et son indic. Un indic pas très discret qui essaie maladroitement de jouer aux agents secrets (car tous les agents secrets ont un chapeau c’est bien connu !) et de ce fait ruine le peu de camouflage qu’il avait. J'ai préféré finalement ne pas l’écrire afin de laisser une plus libre interprétation de ce dessin. Car cette illustration pourrait très bien raconter l’histoire d’un pauvre homme poursuivi par un admirateur secret un peu trop envahissant. Ou encore un voleur de chapeau qui s'attaque aux badauds à la nuit tombée ? Je vous laisse me dire quelle histoire vous préférez. Si vous avez d'autres idées n'hésitez pas à me les partager ! 🐒🎩✨️

À travers une vingtaine de dessins, je vous propose une ballade dans le Paris nocturne de la fin du XIXème siècle. [EN] Welcome to the Café des Musées! I’ve long wanted to pay tribute to this restaurant created in 1924 at the corner of rue de Turenne and rue du Parc Royal. It was my favourite restaurant when I was a kid. At the time, this place was run by the chefs Pierre Lecoutre and François Chenel. The owner and the chef of this restaurant changed a long time ago and I haven’t been there since. And today it is widely reputed to offer the best beef bourguignon in Paris. It might be interesting for me to go there and have a new opinion on it 🍲✨️. Every time I walk by its beautiful red façade, I’m reminded a lot of fond memories. That’s why I decided to capture it in a drawing. Its fairly special name gave me the idea to gather some of the works of the engravers I like best. I loved pulling them out of their initial context and reshape them at my will. I have a mind to write another post with better explanations on the works I used and why I chose them. Cela faisait longtemps que je voulais rendre hommage à ce restaurant fondé en 1924 à l’angle de la rue de Turenne et de la rue du Parc Royal. C’était mon restaurant préféré lorsque j’étais enfant. À l’époque, il était alors tenu par les chefs Pierre Lecoutre et François Chenel. Cela fait bien longtemps que ce restaurant a changé de propriétaire et de chef et je n’y suis pas retournée depuis. Mais apparemment, il est maintenant connu pour servir le meilleur boeuf bourguignon de Paris. Peut-être faudrait-il que j’y aille pour me faire enfin un nouvel avis 🍲✨️. À chaque fois que je passe devant sa belle façade rouge, cela me rappelle énormément de bons souvenirs. C’est pourquoi j’ai voulu l’immortaliser en dessin. Son nom plutôt particulier m’a donné l’idée de réunir une partie des oeuvres de mes graveurs préférés. J’ai adoré les sortir de leur contexte initial et les détourner comme je voulais. Je pense faire un autre post plus explicatif sur les oeuvres que j’ai utilisé et ce pourquoi je les ai choisis. N'hésitez pas à me dire si cela vous intéresse !

[FR] Aujourd’hui, je vous présente ma spécialité : Le Café Gourmand ! Dessert très répandu en France depuis sa création dans les années 90, il s’invite également régulièrement aux tables parisiennes. J’ai voulu jouer sur les mots et remplacer le café à boire par un véritable café-restaurant. Celui qui fait office de star de l’assiette n’est autre que « Le Consulat » (@restaurantleconsulat) situé au 18 rue des Norvins à Montmartre. Je l’ai choisi pour son aspect très particulier qui m’a tout de suite fait penser à une espèce de gâteau posé sur une assiette de pavés. Je ne suis personnellement jamais allée dans cet établissement donc si quelqu’un le connaît et a un avis à partager cela m’intéresse ! Il sera exposé avec une trentaine d’autres dessins à la @cave.saintpaul le samedi 26 novembre à partir de 19h. Si vous voulez lui faire un petit coucou, n’hésitez pas à passer ! Je vous partage également la photo qui m’a inspiré pour ce dessin. Malheureusement, je n’ai pas trouvé le nom du photographe. Si quelqu’un reconnaît son travail je serai ravie de le créditer. This dessert which has become very popular in France since it was created in the 1990s is a favored dish regularly served in Paris restaurants. I chose this one as it very strangely looks like a cake laying on a cobbled plate. [EN] Inktober Day 10 : Crabby 🐈⬛✨️ Here is today a small tribute to the famous sign of an equally well-known cabaret: that of the Black Cat. I’ve been inspired in the past by this mythical Paris tavern. No wonder I happily dived back into its history. The sign which was designed by Adolphe Villette in the second part of the 19th century and drawn on painted sheet steel shows a cat balancing on a crescent moon. This symbol of Montmartre nightlife fell into oblivion after the cabaret closed down in 1897. It became famous once again a few years later in 1902, when it was exhibited on occasion of the Artistic Signs Contest and it won the first prize. I wanted to created a more « realistic » version of it. I also had a fancy for a grumpy moony cat hanging on a moon. When looking for an example of the cat, I used a photo by the amazing artist @robert_sijka. You can admire this sign at the @museecarnavalet in Paris. The museum has just been refurbished. So, if you're in the area, I advise you to have a good look at it. [FR] Inktober Jour 10 : Grognon 🐈⬛✨️ Aujourd’hui, petit hommage à une célèbre enseigne d’un cabaret tout aussi connu : celle du Chat Noir. Cet établissement parisien mythique m’a inspiré par le passé donc ce fut vraiment avec plaisir que je me suis replongée dans son histoire. Dessinée par Adolphe Willette dans la seconde moitié du 19ème siècle, l’enseigne, faite en tôle peinte, représente un chat en équilibre sur un croissant de lune. Emblème de la nuit montmartroise, elle tombe dans l’oubli après la fermeture du cabaret en 1897. Quelques années plus tard, elle connaît une nouvelle heure de gloire. En 1902, elle est présentée à l’occasion du Concours des enseignes artistiques et remporte le premier prix. J’ai voulu en créer une version plus « réaliste ». J’ai essayé donner à ce chat un air plus grincheux afin de mieux coller au thème. Et puis j'aimais bien l’idée d’un chat « mal-luné » accroché à une lune. Pour le chat, j’ai pris comme exemple une photo de @robert_sijka dont j'apprécie beaucoup le travail. Vous pouvez l'admirer aujourd'hui au @museecarnavalet. Il vient d'être rénové donc je vous conseille d'aller y faire un tour!

Inktober Day 2 : Scurry 🐇💨 Sorry I'm sooooooo late! I won’t have time this year to make all the prompts of the list but I'll try to do some. This idea had been running through my mind for a long time and Inktober came up as the ideal opportunity to boost my motivation and start working on it. I was inspired by a photo of my young half-sister taken by her gifted mother (many thanks to @agnesdimaria) two years ago. I immediately adored her look and posture and her way of walking, as if she was about to go to the conquest of Paris! I liked the perspective of the image and the surroundings but I found it lacked a little bit of « magic ». To give it a more fairy touch, I reused and redesigned, as I saw it fit, an old picture dating back to the forties and taken by Dmitri Kessel, the photographer. As for the rabbits, the Champs de Mars is well known to be full of them. Here was for me the ideal opportunity to add a few giant fur balls to my composition. Next year, when she’s five year old, I’ll offer the original drawing to my sister. But if you like this drawing, you can find it printed on @inprnt. Have a nice evening full of rabbits 🖤🐰🖤 🇨🇵Inktober Jour 2 : "se précipiter" 🐇💨 Désolée pour le retard ! Cela faisait longtemps que cette idée me trottait dans la tête. J’ai donc profité du Inktober pour me motiver à le faire. Je me suis inspirée d’une photo de ma petite demi-soeur prise par sa talentueuse maman (merci @agnesdimaria) il y a deux ans. J’ai toute suite adoré sa posture et sa façon de marcher. On la croirait prête à conquérir Paris ! La perspective de l’image et le lieu me plaisait mais je trouvait que ça manquait un peu de « magie ». Pour rendre l’ensemble plus féérique, j’ai repris et arrangé à ma façon une vieille photo des années 40 du photographe Dmitri Kessel. Quant aux lapins, le Champs de Mars est connu pour en être rempli. C’était donc l’occasion parfaite pour ajouter quelques boules de poils géantes à la composition. Je vais offrir l’original l’année prochaine à ma petite soeur pour ses cinq ans. Mais, si ce dessin vous plaît, vous pouvez le retrouver en impression sur @inprnt. Je vous souhaite une belle nuit 🖤🐰🖤

Smaugust day one! An opportunity for me to repost this Parisian chimera and take time at last to make clear for you the inspirations which have led me to this drawing. The idea came to me quite unexpectedly while I was doing research. I came across arial views of Paris and it suddenly dawned on me: What if the Île de la Cité was a disguised sea monster? A sea serpent covered with stones and bricks slithering on the Seine. That was something interesting to dig out! I decided to turn the sea serpent into a moray eel which has a more alarming look but is relatively harmless for men. I liked the idea of this gigantic creature and human beings peacefully living together. As regards architecture, I took on example a section of Turgot’s famous map which is an extremely detailed chart of Paris made by Louis Bretez between 1734 and 1739. It had been ordered by Michel-Etienne Turgot who was in charge of Paris township at the time and was meant to be used for Paris promotion among Parisian, provincial and foreign elites. And now, you know all about it! 🇨🇵Premier jour du smaugust ! C’est l’occasion de republier cette chimère parisienne. Et, surtout, d’enfin vous expliquer les inspirations qui m’ont amenées à ce dessin. Comme souvent, l’idée m’est venue totalement par hasard alors que je faisais des recherches. Je suis tombée sur des vues aériennes de Paris et là ça m’a frappé : l’Ile de la Cité ne serait-elle pas un monstre marin déguisé ? Un serpent de mer recouvert de pierres et de briques qui sinue, à l’insu de tous, dans la Seine ? Cela me paraissait intéressant à creuser ! J’ai préféré changer le serpent en murène, plus inquiétante d’aspect mais relativement inoffensive pour l’homme. L’idée d’une cohabitation pacifique entre cette créature géante et les humains me plaisait bien. Pour le côté architectural, j’ai pris comme exemple une partie du célèbre plan de Turgot. C’est un plan extrêmement détaillé de la ville de Paris réalisé entre 1734 et 1739 par Louis Bretez. Commandé par Michel-Etienne Turgot, alors à la tête de la municipalité, il devait servir à la promotion de Paris auprès des élites parisiennes, provinciales et étrangères. Voilà vous savez tout !
🇬🇧I’m still working on the drawing of my crocodile! At first, I just wanted to pay tribute to the urban legend according to which reptiles have been haunting Paris sewers for decades. And then I came across this photo by Brassaï. The cobblestone winding curve, with its almost scaly texture glowing in the night…. Impossible to miss that! I therefore set upon working on an ink copy which will become part of my drawing. This Hungarian artist, nicknamed “Paris eye” (l’oeil de Paris) is especially well known for his first book “Paris by night” (Paris de nuit) which displays a set of photos illustrating the night world of the capital city in the thirties. He offers us an uncommon view of the city, its underworld, upper classes, streets and bystreets. Ghostly apparitions or shady figures fading in the mist of a mysterious and uncanny Parisian city... I hope you’ll like it! 🐊✨️ 🇨🇵Toujours entrain de dessiner mon crocodile! Au début, je voulais seulement rendre hommage à la fameuse légende urbaine qui raconte que des crocodiles hantent depuis des décennies les égouts parisiens. Et puis je suis tombée sur cette photographie de Brassaï. La courbe sinueuse des pavés, sa texture presque écailleuse qui luit dans la nuit… impossible de passer à côté ! J’ai donc décidé de la retranscrire à l’encre et de l’intégrer dans la composition de mon dessin. Surnommé « l’oeil de Paris », cet artiste hongrois est connu notamment pour son premier livre « Paris de nuit » qui regroupe une série de photos qui dépeint le monde nocturne de la capitale des années 30. C’est une vision unique de la ville qu’il nous partage, de ces bas-fonds, de ces hautes-classes, de ces rues et de ces ruelles.Travailleurs de nuit, prostituées, clochards et aristocrates… Apparitions fantomatiques ou silhouettes qui s’évanouissent dans le brouillard d’un Paris à la fois mystérieux et inquiétant.
