De ondergrondse tunnels werden vroeger door slaven gemaakt door het delven van steen welke gebruikt werden voor het bouwen van de stad Napels door de Grieken en werd daarna gebruikt als onderwater aquaduct door de Romeinen. Vervolgens werden de tunnels gebruikt om te schuilen voor de bombardementen tijdens de 2e wereld oorlog (Napels was 1 van de meest gebombardeerde steden in Italië). It hasn’t even been a full year since my last visit to Paris, but here I am again in my favorite city in the world! And this time I managed to return to the Paris Catacombs. This was my 3rd visit to the “empire of the dead,” and luckily it wasn’t too crowded with visitors, so I had an introspective solo walk through the passages. There were long stretches where it was just me and the eerie silence of the dead. It might be frightening to some, but for me it is strangely peaceful to find myself face to face with people who lived long ago, and to almost meet those who lived during the French Revolution. There is no memory left in the hollowed skulls here, no eyes or ears left that sensed a different world, but they still remind us that history isn’t just stories in books. It’s easy to romanticize the past, to imagine it as we would scenes in a novel, but when you literally come face to face with people who lived through 18th century Paris, that history suddenly becomes tangible and surreally overwhelming. By the late 18th century, the cemeteries of Paris had become overcrowded and the stench of the dead had become so rank in the crypts and churchyards that the city had to act fast to ensure sanitation for the living. So in the witching hours, the cemeteries were gradually unearthed, and the bones were carted off to the city’s underground quarry tunnels. Six million Parisians still lie in the catacombs, including a few famous reburials, such as the revolutionaries Danton, Desmoulins, and Robespierre, etc. They might have been watching me walk by as I was looking for them. There are no gravestones or any way of knowing who is who - nothing but a few markers indicating cemetery names for certain deposits and plaques indicating those who died during revolutionary events, like the September Massacres. It is, as the revolutionaries would have put it, a true city of equality, devoid of religious iconography or status symbols. The bones of the rich and the poor are mingled together here in a unified labyrinth, winding for miles and miles beneath streets none of them would now recognize. #paris #pariscatacombs #frenchrevolution #catacombs #cemeteries #18thcentury
