| 2024 AKARNG Best Warrior Competition | When the opportunity presented itself to compete in this year’s competition, there was no doubt that I would give it a shot. As Soldiers, we recite in our creed that we are “disciplined, physically and mentally tough, trained and proficient in my warrior tasks and drills”. Too often do I see Soldiers forget what it means to be a Soldier. And I will be the first to admit that I do it too. However, we owe it to ourselves, our organization, and as ARNG members, our community to live up to our creed. We cannot forget that before earning the title of mechanic, admin, supply or even recruiter, we earned the title of Soldier first. Now for the ladies, we can be badasses too. I was surprised that there were only nine competitors for the entire state. But I was not surprised that I was the only female competitor. Back in 2014, I enlisted to show my nieces that they could grow up to do whatever they chose to do in life. I wanted to be that strong female role model for them. The amount of times that I was mistaken for a sponsor or volunteer for this event, doesn’t surprise me. I understand that not everyone wants to compete for Best Warrior. However, I know that there are females out there who feel that fire inside of them and whatever the reason is, don’t act on it. That needs to change. After the ruck march, my feet hurt with every step. But with every step, I told myself that I would not quit. Once you have control over your mind, its mind over matter and your body will follow. I can genuinely say that I gave each event everything I had. Huge shoutout to SGT White (this year’s NCO of the year) for CRUSHING it out there and giving me someone to chase. As well as all of the other competitors for showing up and taking names each day. Incredibly honored to be the AKARNG NCO of the Year Runner-Up 🔥 Oh, and did you know, each competitor was put on orders for this? 2024 was great but let’s make 2025 even bigger and badder. Tevin Kenton was awarded first place/Best Soldier at the Region IV Best Warrior Competition held May 1-5th at Camp Dodge, Iowa! 🎉 Along with his fellow Wisconsin competitor Staff Sgt. Alexander Kilbane, Kenton competed against Army National Guard representatives from Indiana, Illinois, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, and Ohio. Hospital Corpsman 1st Class Michael O’Connell might be under the command of the Navy Medicine Operational Training Command but he can also call himself the Best Warrior. O’Connell took first place in the noncommissioned officer category in this year’s U.S. Army John F. Kennedy Special Warfare Center and School Best Warrior Competition, in a big win for the Navy. The annual competition took place last month at Camp Mackall, North Carolina, April 2024. The only sailor to participate in the competition, O’Connell went up against seven contenders from the Army in his category, beating them all despite the event usually being for the Army. The mustachioed hospital corpsman is not any medical clinician. He’s a special operations independent duty corpsman and instructor with the Naval Special Operations Medical Institute at the Joint Special Operations Medical Training Center. As an instructor, he works with several different special operations commands preparing combat medics both in the kind of healthcare skills needed for the field as well as the kind of physical and cognitive conditioning to serve in those units. The Naval Special Operations Medical Institute trains combat medics with the Rangers and Special Forces, the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment, Marine Forces Special Operations Command and others. So O’Connell wasn’t entirely surprised by what the Best Warrior competition had in store. “I was trained in Marine Corps Reconnaissance and Marine Special Operations Command skill sets, so the tasks required of me during this competition were of a familiar and basic nature,” O’Connell said in a release on his victory. That said, he did have to learn some things from the Army, particularly regulations and service-specific ideas for the oral board part of the Best Warrior challenge. The Best Warrior competition put contestants through several tests, ranging from written exams and cognitive tests to physical challenges such as a ruck march, obstacle course and land navigation exercises. Thirteen Nebraska Army National Guard Soldiers competed in the Nebraska State Best Warrior Competition, April 22-25, 2024, at the Camp Ashland and Greenlief Training Sites. The four-day competition tested the Soldiers on various warrior tasks and pushed their bodies to the limit. The competition included a 12-mile ruck march, an ACFT, land navigation, water survival training and more. Congratulations to all the competitors! #BestWarrior Five Soldiers and three noncommissioned officers wrapped up this year’s Best Warrior Competition today. It was a demanding and multi-faceted challenge for those who participated. The entire competition lasted four full days, during which the competitors were required to demonstrate their abilities in a wide range of skills that covered the core elements of a Soldier’s training to include: An Army Combat Fitness Test, multiple cognitive tests, a Soldier’s Physical Assessment, the Nasty Nick obstacle course, a medical assessment, a comprehensive general subjects exam, day and night land navigation, a combat water survival test, a ruck march with hands-on warrior tasks, and an in-person oral board during which the competitor’s communication skills were evaluated. The Maryland Guard put on an insane competition, packed out with some of the coolest activities I’ve got to partake in during my time in the Army. BIG thank you to my beautiful girlfriend Jenna Mastrouni for coming out and running the 15.7 mile ruck with me! She definitely contributed to my 3 hour 24 minute finish time. Last night Jordan brought home the MD Army National Guard BWC Soldier of the Year Award. 🥇 He’s worked extremely hard for this and managed to make time for his training while still working full time hours with a long commute each week. When Jordan joined the ANG almost 4 years ago, we had only been together a little over a year. Neither of us were prepared, nor did we know what a long distance relationship would entail. We were in for a ride. His time away in training for almost a year was challenging as a new couple. There were times we didn’t know if we’d make it and we struggled. It uncovered a lot that we needed to work on, but neither of us really knew where to start… It took a lot of time, effort, and hard conversations to work through the challenges we faced. We became committed to understanding one another’s needs, behaviors, and attachment styles, while learning how to communicate properly. The work many people don’t want to do. Getting to pace and support him during the 15.4 mile ruck event on Thursday, right after our 5 year anniversary, was really special to me. Not only was it a major accomplishment for him taking 1st place overall, but it felt like a huge milestone in our relationship since he had enlisted at the beginning of our relationship. We’ve both grown as individuals and as a couple. Jordan is my best friend, and I couldn’t be more proud of him. So proud of @docsimmel for not only participating in the Army National Guard’s Best Warrior Competition but completing each task and earning the Norwegian Foot March Badge (18.6 miles with 25lbs extra) and the German Armed Forces Proficiency Badge. Camp Swift, Bastrop, Texas 13-15 March 2024 The AUSA Texas Capital Area Chapter was a sponsor again this year for the Texas National Guard Best Warrior Competition, which was conducted at Camp Swift, Bastrop, Texas during the period 13-15 March 2024. The Best Warrior Competition is a rigorous three-day competition that tests the tactical and technical expertise of Soldiers and Airmen through scored events, such as an oral knowledge exam board, a tactical road march, obstacle course and physical fitness test, as well as “a mystery event” announced the day of the competition. Both Army and Air National Guard members compete against each other for the title of “Best Warrior” and “Best non-commissioned officer” in the state of Texas. The winners of this Best Warrior competition were named and honored at the banquet held on 15 March at the Bastrop River Course Club House in Bastrop, Texas. During this award banquet the Texas Capital Area Chapter, Treasurer, COL (Ret) John Willis presented awards to the winners of the competition. COL Willis presented an AUSA Texas Capital Area Chapter coin as well as premium membership to AUSA to the following soldiers: SSG Kameron Fletcher – Top NCO Award and SPC Brian Burch the Soldier Top Award. These two soldiers will continue to represent Texas in regional and/or National Best Warrior competitions later this year. The AUSA Texas Capital Area Chapter provided financial sponsorship to ensure the success of this exceptional program through The Best Warrior Competition Military Forces Conference Foundation.
