What’s important for you in a ruck or go bag? For me it’s versatility, ease of access, and weight. I’ve learned this the hard way with insufficient packs whose materials are heavier, have lower quality hardware, and are just generally more difficult to access all your gear. When looking for a new pack, these 3 things stuck with me, and while I knew I’d have to make some sacrifices to get close to all 3, I ended up finding that with the @mysteryranch 50L 3-zip. This pack, for me, has it all. The 3 way zipper is one of the best designs I’ve seen that lets you access your entire pack, or just open the top for quick access. It meets the lightweight factor as well being a framed pack. The cummerbund is plush and comfortable and you can really sinch it into your hips to distribute the weight. The 50L size allows me to pack the entirety of my go bag with some room left over for additional rations or tinder bags, socks, etc. In terms of versatility I really think this pack has it. A little life update / story. As you may or may not know I have been training for a ruck race this summer with @green_beret_fitness . Through this process of increasing my running and hiking I got really skinny. I had people commenting and even hating on my page for being skinny because they assumed I was frail and wasn’t capable of a lot of the outdoor and survival activities I show on my page. When in fact I was actually just getting really skinny because I was pushing myself so hard running and hiking, but I couldn’t get enough calories in. I was always tired in the afternoon and just kept getting skinnier. So I finally started taking pre workout and protein powder on a consistent basis and it was life changing for me. I don’t feel that 3 pm crash anymore, my muscles aren’t sore all the time, and I’m still thin obviously but I’ve started to gain a lot more muscle mass. Okay I feel like I always say this but life has been LIFE-ing hard and while things are AMAZING, they are also quite busy. I feel like I want to start doing like a daily recap of my days just so yall can really see the craziness! BUT! April recap - one amazing event at a time. Starting with! @deka.fit Mile at @underdog_fitnessus was a blast! Started the day with ruck since I really wanted to see what I could do fresh with that and got myself a pretty awesome time if I say so myself. Little break, then time for individual where I also took a MINUTE off my pr! Let’s. Fucking. Go! Lastly, doubles with @zach_tait11 where we CRUSHED even though we like never did this shit together before. (Even though @ambertait and @alexandergolikk beat us…minor details 😂). Definitely starting to really love doubles and getting way more comfortable with Deka as a whole while learning how my body works with the different stations! Training is going amazing and I can definitely tell with how I’m feeling while racing. This was the PERFECT event to see my teammates and friends before heading to ARUBA! Lessons learned. After recently listening to a discussion about camouflage on the @the_longhouse_preparedness podcast I’ve started to rethink a lot of things when it comes to the topic. The above photo was taken quite some time ago when new guys were still in the vetting process and not everyone was at the same level as far as kit goes. We’re still working towards a standardized camouflage and uniform but now I have a new sense of urgency for solving this issue. Camouflage is used for many things other than blending into your environment. It should go without saying that identification of friendly forces is a very important part of working in a team. This could mean possibly having to standardize a camouflage that isn’t the greatest for your environment because another force may be using it or if your group is already running a uniform that another element is using you must find another method for IFF. Small square patches on your shoulder aren’t gonna help your teammate identify you if you are any further than 50 meters apart, especially if you are in a wooded environment. This is where solid colors really seem appealing to me. Very easy to make out as opposed to a camo pattern. Some uses of this could be running solid color field shirts with your camo bottoms, running solid color boonie hats/ ball caps, even just standardizing a solid color uniform and using field craft to make it blend to the environment you are in. I am by no means an expert on this and might sound ignorant.
