Skirting efficiently requires a kind of ruthlessness that I think comes from a level of experience I donāt have. Iām doing my best to channel Katie @bobolinkyarns, however, and am starting to realize that if itās taking more than a few seconds to decide if that part of the fleece should become yarn or mulch, then itās mulch. Move on. It could be yarn if time wasnāt a factor, but time is as much of a factor as money and the āwasteā wool isnāt going to waste suppressing weeds around our young orchard. For me skirting is an exercise in getting comfortable saying, āNo.ā

Today we took a drive over the mountain to The University of Tennessee in Knoxville to teach those enrolled in their sheep and goat management class about how fiber from different breeds have different properties that make them great for different aspects of the fiber industry, how to wash wool, how to dye wool with easter egg dye, and how needle felting turns wool and roving into our gorgeous products! For our raw fleeces we featured different percentages of valais, our teeswater rams fleece, a lincoln fleece, and Savannah brought border leicester fleeces and a babydoll southdown fleece! Q. What am I looking at, Tara? A. What you see here is history - and controversy. In the 19th century, in places like Prince Edward Island and Nova Scotia, Border Leicester shepherds were intentionally breeding naturally-coloured Border Leicesters - like that gorgeous face on the right. Collectively, these world-famous, fibre-focused flocks were known as the "Black Beauties" and they were highly sought after and prized for their incredible fleeces, along with all the usual wonderful BL traits. (All sheep have some natural coloured genes and the Border Leicester is no exception. Although it's recessive, you can see evidence for this in the freckled ears or noses that many of the sheep have - these are not considered "faults" on the breed standard. The Canadian Sheep Breeders Association recognizes that these genes are present and accepts that this is simply another twist to the DNA story. . . Of course, that's not all.) With the advent of industrial textile manufacturing, white fleeces gradually became preferred - mostly due to ease for dyeing processes - and by 2002, less than 20 of the Black Beauties were left, tucked away in remote homesteads and farms in the Annapolis Valley. Fortunately for us, American Border Leicester breeders had purchased some of these stunning sheep in the 1970s and took them back to their farms where naturally-coloured lambs were born. Gradually, these genetics have spread across the U.S. and they are now a key part of the Border Leicester population stateside. I want to bring the legacy of the Black Beauties home. Very sad to share that Patrickās ewe Daisy died unexpectedly last week. She had to have a vet assisted birth but overall it went well and she seemed to recover quickly. Two nights later she had a massive prolapse in the middle of the night and was found dead in the morning. Itās a sad end for a sweet sheep. Now we have the bittersweet task of raising her twins without her. I had intended to post a photo daily when I started this account last year, as a way of keeping an open diary of my fibre art. And then I got worried that photos of the same project day after day would get boring and annoying for others, forgetting that it's kind of more important to me that these photos from each day plus a few words can often be a gentle and oblique memory jogger of other things that were going on that day/week/month should i feel like doing a deep dive into my feed in a year from now. So this is a potentially boring photo of my Border Leicester spin. I feel like this particular project has been jinxed from the start - when I went to start drumcarding it, I discovered it still had heaps of sticky tacky lanolin leftover from my surprisingly poor job of scouring it, so I had to re-scour it. Now every time I sit down to spin on this, the phone rings or one of my kids starts wailing through the house like a banshee or a visitor pulls up in the driveway and so on. Headed over to Drop Bear Brewery for some spent grains for the animals. I met them through Gratitude Brewery as theyāve been using Gratitudeās space to brew. They are just getting started with brewing small batches at the Drop Bear location at 27th/Willamette. Had to bring the new bottle lamb Zoro over for introductions as heād been struggling with his transition to us. The brewery group had so much fun meeting the baby.
