Do you chew when you drink from a straw? If a baby is drinking his tongue will be extended over his bottom teeth and he will form a seal around the breast with his lips and tongue. If baby is biting, he isn’t drinking, so you can remove him from the breast and gently tell an older baby ‘no biting ’. Some babies bite as they start teething - 'chomping' can help ease discomfort, offer something cool to bite such as a frozen facewasher before feeds. Some babies bite when they become distracted or they take a nipple with them between their teeth as they turn their heads to look around (niplash!). Try breastfeeding in a quiet space and give your baby your full attention as she nurses – make eye contact, stroke your baby and encourage her to be gentle by talking quietly and telling her, ‘good girl, gentle, gentle’. Another great way to help older babies stay focussed on breastfeeding, especially when out and about, is to wear a baby safe necklace. Babies are engaged by the necklace and tend to touch and play with these during feeds instead of pulling off and on the breast to look around. If your baby seems to be biting as he ends a feed and gets tired or starts slipping off the nipple, instead of disengaging him, it can often be more effective ( and less painful to you) to try pushing him closer to the breast. As his nose pushes against the breast he will need to open his mouth wider to breath so will reposition himself at the breast and re-latch correctly. If you need support, contact a support group or an IBCLC for more personalised trouble shooting and tips to prevent or stop biting while breastfeeding. #breastfeedingmyths #weaningwithlove #breastfeedingbiting #bitingbaby #breastfeedingmums #babyteeth #babyteethers

It’s been a few days of trialling this @littlegnashers teething necklace (not an ad they were just recommended by a trusted friend!) and I’m pleased to say it’s working! He really seems to be struggling with his top two teeth and has been for a while so he is absolutely loving having something to chop down on! I give it to him before he feeds to make sure he’s not tempted to bite and then he plays with it while he’s feeding sometimes to help with his distractedness! If you’re also having issues with biting / distractedness I’d say they’re definitely worth a try! #breastfeeding #teethingnecklace #breastfeedingsupport #breastfeedingmama #nursingfashion #breastfeedingnecklace #breastfeedingfashion #breastfeedingbiting #biting #bitingbaby

I've been meaning to write about this for a while now, and this time, I've had to use all of these tips myself as my son is teething and bit me during a feed two days ago. Here it goes: 👩‍⚕️ Speak to your doctor The first time my son bit me, I was worried I was getting an infection. I had a lot of inflammation and yellow gooey fluid was appearing at the cut. I was confused as to how to heal it, do I keep it moist like cracked nipples in the early days of breastfeeding or was it a dry type where you wait for scab to form. My doctor advised that I dry heal it and let it dry, and so far this has worked every time. I noticed the longer the cut remained moist, the longer it took to heal. I was prescribed antibiotics for 10 days and kept rinsing my wound with salt water and let it air dry (try to keep breast pads only during feeds if you need them) 🤕 Give yourself time to heal It's a real wound and painful at that, breastfeeding was excruciating for me, so I really limited feeding from that side and pumped to relieve the milk. Altnough my son refused to drink the milk, I tired putting it in his food and with cereal. He never ate massive volumes but he had some. 🍼 If your baby refuses a bottle Try to feed on the "good" side and if you feel you need to give ur baby milk from the sore breast, make sure your baby is fast asleep to minimise any more pain and damage. I rocked my son to sleep and fed him after I put him down, this minimised further biting (since he was teething) and also allowed me more control over the latch as he wasn't moving around. 🛌 Take it easy Erase any tiring chores like vaccuming or heavy lifting while recovering from the bite, it can be very painful and emotionally draining as most likely your little one will notice something is different and he/she is not getting as much milk as normal. They are probably in a bad mood since they could be teething (reason for bite) so play more and spend time on the sofa!!! #breastfeeding #babybites #breastfeedingstruggles #breastfeedingbiting #teethingbites #toddlerlife #nursingtosleep #breastfeedingtoddler #feedingtosleep #nursingbites

It's been a very long day but I love baby cuddles ❤️ think Robyn is struggling a lot with her teeth and general busy brain with new things to learn. Breastfeeding + biting 😫 be glad to get some sleep and hopefully we'll have a better day tomorrow. This is my new favourite picture of us. It's so simple and raw ❤️ . . #breastfeeding #breastfeedingbiting #baby #babygirl #momsofinstagram #mumsofinstagram #mumlife #motherhood

What is a nursing strike? Is your baby going through a nursing strike? Suddenly refusing to breastfeed, and before they were nursing happily without troubles? How do you get through a nursing strike? Do you use your breast pump? Do you feed your baby something else during the nursing strike? How long does a nursing strike last? What can bring on a nursing strike? #nursingstrike #breastfeeding #lactation #lactavist #lactationconsultant #summerfriedmann #donenaturally #everydropcounts #bitingnipple #breastfeedingbiting #breastmilk #nursingmom #workingmom #sahm #breastfeedingsupport #breastrefusal #rebirthing #backtobreast #IBCLC #empoweringwomen #newmom #newbaby #newborn #returntowork #postpartumperiod #motherhood #pregnancy #maternityleave #exclusivepumping
