A teething baby may have tender gums and want to bite and chew on everything including your nipple as they feed - ouch! There are a few things you can do to help: 💡 Give your baby something hard and cold to chew on before a feed. This might relieve their discomfort. 💡 Rub baby's gums before a feed, perhaps with an ice-cube wrapped in a soft cloth, so they are less inclined to chew on your breast. 💡 If your baby is in a lot of pain, they may not want to feed. Ask your pharmacist or health care provider about pain relief options. Breastfeeding and biting This is a concern for many breastfeeding parents. What happens when my baby gets teeth? Generally, it's not a problem. If a baby is actively feeding their tongue should cover the lower teeth and so they can't bite. Top teeth can rub a little, but they usually come through later than the bottom ones. Try a more exaggerated latch, so point the nipple to the nose, have baby look up at the breast with head back and tuck their bum and shoulders in tight to your body. This should take pressure off the top teeth and make it more comfortable. But sometimes babies do clamp down, and especially when they're teething. And if they do, it is REALLY PAINFUL! So ideally we want to prevent them from doing it. Many babies clamp down at the end of the feed when the flow has slowed and they get a bit bored. So look for signs of baby becoming distracted and take them off the breast before they do it. Some babies clamp down at the start of the feed. Either this is because they actually don't want a feed, in which case try again later. Or they are frustrated waiting for the let-down, in which case do some breast compressions to keep them interested. If your baby does clamp down, you can gently block their nose with your fingers, or bring them closer in to the breast so their nose is buried. Then they have to open their mouth to breathe. If you try to pull them off you'll just drag their teeth down your breast. Ouch! Babies don't understand that they are hurting you. In fact sometimes they find it quite amusing if you yelp and make a funny noise. This can mean they'll do the same thing again to see if they can get you to do the same funny noise again! Think of it being like playing with a squeaky toy! So try not to react if at all possible, which is easier said than done of course! If babies continue to bite, take them off every time they do it or look like they are going to do it. They will soon learn not to bite the boob that feeds them. If they want to continue the feed, offer the other breast to give a faster flow. And watch for the signs of them getting bored. The good news is that this is usually a very short phase!

People may tell you that once your baby gets teeth and bites, you will probably have to stop breastfeeding. However it's not physically possible for a baby to bite when they are breastfeeding correctly, because their tongue covers their bottom gum and teeth. 💡 If a baby isn’t actively feeding, that’s when they might bite. It usually happens at either the beginning or end of a feed if: 🦷 Your milk isn’t coming quickly enough. 🦷 You may be distracted and your baby is feeling your lack of attention. 🦷 Your baby has had enough and is playing at the breast. 🦷 Your baby is teething and has sore gums. #ABAIsHereForYou #ozbreastfeeding #ABAGladstone #teethingbaby #bitingbaby #breastfeeding #breastfeedingmum #breastfeedingsupport

Do you chew when you drink from a straw? If a baby is drinking his tongue will be extended over his bottom teeth and he will form a seal around the breast with his lips and tongue. If baby is biting, he isn’t drinking, so you can remove him from the breast and gently tell an older baby ‘no biting ’. Some babies bite as they start teething - 'chomping' can help ease discomfort, offer something cool to bite such as a frozen facewasher before feeds. Some babies bite when they become distracted or they take a nipple with them between their teeth as they turn their heads to look around (niplash!). Try breastfeeding in a quiet space and give your baby your full attention as she nurses – make eye contact, stroke your baby and encourage her to be gentle by talking quietly and telling her, ‘good girl, gentle, gentle’. Another great way to help older babies stay focussed on breastfeeding, especially when out and about, is to wear a baby safe necklace. Babies are engaged by the necklace and tend to touch and play with these during feeds instead of pulling off and on the breast to look around. If your baby seems to be biting as he ends a feed and gets tired or starts slipping off the nipple, instead of disengaging him, it can often be more effective ( and less painful to you) to try pushing him closer to the breast. As his nose pushes against the breast he will need to open his mouth wider to breath so will reposition himself at the breast and re-latch correctly. If you need support, contact a support group or an IBCLC for more personalised trouble shooting and tips to prevent or stop biting while breastfeeding. #breastfeedingmyths #weaningwithlove #breastfeedingbiting #bitingbaby #breastfeedingmums #babyteeth #babyteethers

Were you told by your dentist to night wean your breastfed baby for concerns of it causing cavities? Extensive research has proven that there is no link between breastfeeding (nighttime or otherwise) and cavities. Breastfed babies can get cavities, though, so good dental hygiene is still needed. What can cause cavities are nighttime bottles and not brushing teeth before bed once baby is eating solid foods. Bottles allow liquids to pool in baby’s mouth and sit on baby’s teeth for long periods of time. Breastmilk doesn’t pool in the same way because milk only flows when baby is actively sucking. When baby is latched appropriately to actually express breastmilk, it enters the baby’s mouth behind the teeth. If the baby is actively sucking then he is also swallowing, so breast milk doesn’t sit in baby’s mouth like it can with bottles. Sugars from table foods can sit on the teeth and bacteria in saliva uses these sugars to produce acid, which in turn causes tooth decay. Actively brushing baby’s teeth twice a day helps reduce these sugars from sitting on the teeth. Aly AAM, Erfan D, Abou El Fadl RK. If you haven’t been bitten, know that not all babies end up biting. If you have been bitten, the first step is to determine if baby is biting out of pain from teething, milk flow preference or boredom. Looking at the timing of when baby is biting can lead to helpful clues in figuring out the 'why.'⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣ Things to consider: when does baby bite? Start of the feed? Baby may need to chew on a teether or cold cloth to relieve sore gums before feeding. End of the feed when flow slows? Try compressions to prompt stronger flow of milk. You may have to be extra diligent in watching baby's behavior & catch them before they bite. ⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣ How do you react when bitten? Do you cry out? Some babies find it hilarious & it becomes a game. If mom doesn't react, calmly ends the feeding & sets baby down, the 'game' loses its appeal. ⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣ Keep in mind baby can’t bite while actively nursing as the tongue covers the lower teeth. Watch your little one carefully for any cues & unlatch before baby can bite down. Does baby give a little side-eye & smile before biting down? That’s your cue to unlatch. Consistently stopping it before it happens usually ends the behavior in a few days.⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣ Ideas that have helped other moms: Try using baby's name rather than saying “No.” It may attract their attention & distract long enough for you to intervene. “No" is fine too, if necessary.⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣ Have something on hand for biting on (teether, cold cloth, breastmilk popsicle etc)—biting itself isn't wrong, only biting your breast—and say, "If you want to nurse, don't bite. If you want to bite, bite this."⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣ Try changing breasts: sometimes a baby is frustrated by a slower flow but nurses properly on the other breast.⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣ Give baby a chance to reposition, paying attention to the latch like when baby was a newborn: wide mouth, tongue forward.⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣ Nurse somewhere calm & quiet for a bit. Nurse baby in a carrier or swaying side to side. Movement can really help! 📷: @‌laurenannwhite7 📷: @‌lactanciasocial #biting #bitingbaby #babybiting #breastfeeding #breastfeedingmom #breastfeedingmama #breastfeedingsupport #breastfeedingtips #breastmilk #legendairymilk

Biting is painfully common (see what we did there). But just because your baby is biting you doesn’t mean you have to wean! Babies can bite at any age, and it definitely hurts, whether baby has teeth or not. We most commonly see babies bite as they start teething, but biting can also be caused by illness, distraction or boredom (especially toward the end of a feeding) or simply wanting more milk. If your babe is biting, pay attention to any signs. The two most important things you can do to discourage biting are: 1️⃣ Avoid having a loud reaction (if possible), which could encourage your baby to bite again 2️⃣ Unlatch your baby and immediately end the nursing session. Babies are smart and will soon figure out that biting and milk don’t go together! #michianamoms #breastfeeding #suopportisbest #breastfeedingsupport #ibclc #bitingbaby #nursingmoms

Many mothers ask us, will I need to wean once my baby has teeth? The answer is no! If you are able to attach your baby well, with a full mouthful of breast tissue then you will not feel your baby’s teeth. This is because its impossible for your baby to be sucking/feeding and bite at the same time – when feeding, their tongue will be down and covering their bottom teeth and gums! How to prevent biting: 1. Biting at the beginning of the feed: If your baby is biting when beginning a feed its important you optimise his/her attachment. You may need to offer them a teething toy to bite/soothe their gums first, then try to attach them again. 2. Distracted baby: If your baby is distracted, wriggling or pushing away with their arms/legs, don’t offer the breast right away. Try to settle him/her first, remove obvious noise and distractions from your environment and try again. 3. Biting for attention: Try to focus on your baby while they are feeding. As they grow older, they will notice when you yourself are distracted, and they will sometimes bite in order to get your attention. If possible, try not to react strongly. This just further encourages them to bite for your ‘reaction’. Instead, detach them, say ‘no biting’ firmly and then allow them to try again. If they continue to bite, detach them and the feed is over. 4. Biting at the end of the feed: Babies will often bite as the feed is drawing to a close. To avoid this, monitor them closely for signs of boredom, fatigue or irritability. If you see your baby is losing interest in the feed, detach them gently before they can pull their tongue back and bite down. Additional tips: ➢ Try to use positive reinforcement as your first line defence before resorting to gentle but firm disciple. ➢ Stopping the breastfeed is a very effective way to teach your baby that biting behaviour will not be tolerated ➢ If you think their biting is related more to teething and painful gums, offer them cold teething/chew toys instead so they learn to associate this with biting, not your nipple! Baby's often bite during breastfeeding due to various reasons and we are sure that a lot of moms would relate to it. The reasons might be plenty- - Your baby might be bored or simply distracted. - Your baby might be trying to get your attention. - Your baby might be teething & hence might have sensitive and paining gums - Your baby might be unwell due to cold, etc. & hence trying to find comfort. However, this does not mean that you have to bear with it as a mom. Here are some ways to deal with it- - Give a cold chew to baby before breastfeeding in case of teething. This helps to calm their gums down a bit. - Give attention to your baby while breastfeeding. - While breastfeeding, keep your finger ready to break the bite instantly. - Observe the patterns leading to the bite & deal with them accordingly. If you have any other hacks that your fellow moms can use, share them below. Does biting sound familiar🤨please get in touch📞and we can do a full breastfeeding assessment to understand the root of the cause 🤷🏼‍♀️WHY IS BABY BITING? There are various reasons your baby may bite whilst breastfeeding from teething, distraction or even an ear infection or blocked nose as swallowing may be more difficult, understanding the reason why baby is biting is important in helping to quickly resolve the problem 😱When baby bites whilst feeding it can cause mum to be fearful to put baby back to the breast as she is psychologically scared it will happen again ⚠️WHAT TO DO IF BABY BITES? 🌟Be aware during feeding of signs that baby is about to bite and act quickly removing them from the breast 🌟Don't pull baby off the breast as this will damage your nipple, pop your index finger into baby's mouth between the gums and break the suction 🌟Try not to shout or alarm baby as this might trigger breast refusal, however baby needs to be aware that biting your nipple is not acceptable, use phrases such as "that's not nice" or "no biting" as you remove them from the breast, baby doesn't know they have hurt you and might not be happy that you have stopped feeding so comfort and cuddle them 🌟Use distraction techniques such as talking, singing and making baby laugh that may encourage them to release from the breast 🌟If baby is easily distracted try feeding in a calm and quiet environment 🌟If teething's the problem offer a teething ring or try making breast milk ice pops in silicone moulds, this can be a great way to sooth sore gums before offering the breast again, remember that breastfeeding releases pain reliving hormones that sooth baby's gums 🌟Try breast compressions, this will to stimulate baby to suck and swallow and discourage biting as baby cannot bite if actively sucking 🌟Get support to ensure baby is latching correctly 🌟If baby is unwell try upright feeding, this can help with congestion and help baby to breath more easily #ohanababy_feeding #biting #teething #bitingbabyphase #bitingbaby #baby #breastfeedingproblems #breastfeeding #teethingbaby #bitingthenipple #addlestonebreastfeedingsupport #addlestonemums #addlestonebabies

UPDATE: It can be a big shock when your baby clamps down or bites during nursing. At the same time, it can scare your baby when you jump back, yell or have a big reaction from the event. When this happens and your baby refuses to nurse, it is time for a reset. Take lots of time to be skin to skin with your baby, take a bath together, nap together, wear your baby in a sling and focus on making your baby feel safe and calm at your chest and on your body. Hum or sing to your baby, gentle stroke their back or do some infant massage. All these relaxing and soothing activities can help them feel secure and calm to initiate nursing again. Babies pick up on our cues. By starting with the focus not on breastfeeding but trust and comfort, your baby picks up on your calmness and is able to be calm as well. Babies rely on you to regulate their emotions and nervous system. To help relieve the soreness from being bit, try using Legendairy Milk’s NipDip, rubbing a little expressed milk on your nipple and areola or using coconut oil to heal your skin. Before nursing, try giving your baby a teether or a rolled up frozen washcloth to soothe their sore gums just before nursing. Pay attention to when milk slows, it is a typical time your baby might clamp down. Keep your baby close to your body to be able to unlatch them quickly. — What advice would you give to this mom? UPDATE: Teething can make the baby’s gums swollen, more red and sore. When they bite down or gnaw with their gums, it brings a little relief. Before nursing sessions, offer your baby some ways to ease those sore gums. Teething toys can help massage their gums. Take a washcloth and wet it. Ring it out, roll it up and pop it in the freezer. Just before nursing, let your baby gnaw on the frozen washcloth to help numb their gums. During nursing sessions, pay close attention to when your baby is done nursing. That is the time they may chomp down and cause damage to your nipple. When you notice they have slowed down and seem to be done nursing, offer a teething toy, or a frozen breastmilk pop to soothe those sore gums. For mom, express some breast milk and let it air dry on the cut or damaged skin. Then apply some coconut oil or NipDip to protect and heal the skin. As long as your baby is latched deeply, the cut will be able to heal and no further damage should occur. —— What advice would you give to this mom? Comment below and save this post. Oouch! 🤱 Did you know that some babies might bite because they can’t wait to start feeding and your let-down is slow? If this is the case, it may help if you express a small amount of breastmilk to trigger your breastmilk just before you offer the breast. Biting is usually a passing phase. Hopefully a very short phase for Mumma as it can hurt! When that cute little baby bites!!! Ooooouuccchhhh. 😣 Boden went threw a 6 week biting streak recently and it was fu$!ing awful. I was scared to even bring my breast to his mouth in fear that he would bite and pull (as he did every single time I offered). I used these methods to keep from slapping him or screaming out in pain. I didn’t want him to be scared to come to the breast as I knew we would get past this. I will say, there were days that I wanted to just throw in the towel but deep down I knew we were not done breast-feeding. I kept offering the breast frequently throughout the day for the six weeks and sure enough one day he stopped. I know the biting stage can be very tough but use these tips to help carry-on without creating a negative association with breast-feeding. #ibclc #breastfeeding #lactationsupport #bitingbaby #breastfeedingstruggles

When your baby bites you while you're nursing, it's likely the most shocking, unsettling, and painful experience you've ever had. What on earth can you do if your baby bites? Try to avoid a dramatic reaction - While yelling or screaming might be your first instinct when you’re bitten, it’s not helpful in this situation and can backfire. Your baby may become upset and bite you more if they’re frightened by your response Gently remove your baby from the breast - Instead, put a pinky or other finger in the corner of your baby’s mouth, which will break the seal and allow your baby to detach Offer an alternative - If your baby appears to be teething, you may want to offer them a wet washcloth or teething toy to soothe their gums. ⚙️ ℂ𝕙𝕒𝕝𝕝𝕖𝕟𝕘𝕖 𝕒𝕥 𝟞 𝕄𝕠𝕟𝕥𝕙 - from Baby's First Year Milestones by Aubrey Hargis 💬 Everything he touches goes directly to the mouth. E V E R Y T H I N G. He chews with the gums, and he feels with his tongue. That's how they are wired to learn about sensory. Sadly, latching 👶🏻L had to end earlier than I hoped for. He decided to play biting one day. While I failed to exercise calmness, I said with parentease "no do that," but honestly finding it cute. He thought it was funny so he kept doing it. Did anyone mention the pulling while biting as well? It's not cute anymore when that gets frequent. I had to stop latching entirely since 👶🏻L became very distracted at the slightest sound he heard or people talking. As much as I want to carry him in my arms for a longer time, I am already grateful for my breastfeeding journey - it'd greatly improved compared to my first. ---------- #6monthsold #babychallenge #bitingbaby

4 TERRIBLE THINGS I DID AS A 1 YEAR OLD 👉 swipe to see the proof My mom gave me the childhood memory calendar she kept for me. Here’s what I learned about my child self. 1. I would kiss my own picture and no one else. 2. I threw sand in my eye and got a corneal abrasion. I had to wear an eye patch. 3. I was not well behaved in church 4. I bit a lot. My mom. My friend. My mom in a Toys R Us. I bit myself when I was put in time out. I also learned I liked dogs ♥️, was very enthusiastic and exuberant. The past doesn’t exist and I don’t actually think anything I did was bad or wrong. Just a reflection of parenting at the time. So I’m not sure what any of this means! 🤷‍♀️ Please tell me something funny you did as a child so I’m not alone! 😂

There isn’t many studies on “what’s the best way to deal with a biting breastfed baby”. But what we know is that pressure on the gums probably feels good for your baby, which is why they want to clamp down. It’s not meant to hurt you and they don’t know it will hurt you. Managing their pain off the breast can potentially reduce their need to clamp down while on the breast. Here are some tips to manage teething pain! 👉 teethers, cold ones are great! 👉 make some breastmilk popsicles! 👉 Breastfeed! Sucking is calming and helps reduce pain. when your baby is drinking, their tongue covers the lower gums. Keeping baby actively drinking at the breast and minimizing non nutritive sucking may help. Try breast compressions near the end of a feed. Pay more attention to them as they slow their swallows. 👉If needed, pain relievers like Tylenol are an option. Follow the direction on the box. 👉Things that are marketed for teething but may actually be harmful: Numbing gels, homeopathy tabs, and teething necklaces. Ive attached a Letter of Concern written by the Canadian Paediatric Society about injury to babies wearing necklaces. What if your baby bites? This is probably the first time you may be setting boundaries around breastfeeding! Teach your baby not to bite. 👉Pull them closer to you so they can’t spin their head with your nipple clamped in their mouth. 👉unlatch with your finger to break the vacuum/ clamp. 👉 Gently explain that biting hurts you and it’s not ok. Babies can understand more language than we realize. They also can see your facial expression is not happy. 👉Try again in a new position. 👉 To treat any wound keep it clean and moist and cover with a nonstick dressing. If pain is worsening see your doc to rule out infection. Advil or Tylenol for pain is also an option. These are tips and many of you may have managed biting in your own way! Please share your tips for other parents! I’d love to hear them too! #breastfeeding #bitingbaby #teething #teethingbaby #breastfeedingmom #breastfedbaby #ibclc #familymedicine #pediatrics #baby

Breastfeeding & Biting 😬🦈 Swipe right for my top tips when it comes to biting. Please note #1 is the latch. Often when this is addressed the biting stops. A baby with a deep latch cannot physically bite whilst actively feeding. Many parents worry about this in advance unnecessarily. It is important to know that it not a given that all babies will bite. Did/does your baby bite when breastfeeding? What age did it happen? Please share your top tips of how to stop this occuring. It’s been a few days of trialling this @littlegnashers teething necklace (not an ad they were just recommended by a trusted friend!) and I’m pleased to say it’s working! He really seems to be struggling with his top two teeth and has been for a while so he is absolutely loving having something to chop down on! I give it to him before he feeds to make sure he’s not tempted to bite and then he plays with it while he’s feeding sometimes to help with his distractedness! If you’re also having issues with biting / distractedness I’d say they’re definitely worth a try! #breastfeeding #teethingnecklace #breastfeedingsupport #breastfeedingmama #nursingfashion #breastfeedingnecklace #breastfeedingfashion #breastfeedingbiting #biting #bitingbaby

One of the biggest fears of breastfeeding parents is the arrival of teeth. Will they bite me? *Fact: babies can’t actually bite while effectively sucking at the breast as their tongue is in the way* However, babies (particularly around the 3-4 month mark) can start to become distracted whilst breastfeeding. After a session of good feeding they will begin to start looking around and latching on and off. This is often the time some babies decide to nibble particularly when teething. Another common reason for biting is a slow milk flow or a fast milk flow. ⏩Swipe for more reason your baby may bite and what you can do to prevent it #teething #teethingbaby #bitingbaby #breastfeedingeducation #lactationsupport #lactationconsultant #ibclc #parentingstruggles #ouch #bitingwhilebreastfeeding #bitingwhilenursing #parentsofsydney #mumsofsydney

🚩Is your baby (or toddler) a biter? Biting is very common in older babies and toddlers and can often lead parents to feel frustrated, guilty and worried that they are doing something wrong. 📢 You aren't! Biting happens for many reasons and is never because your child is being 'naughty' or doesn't care for others. The most common reasons for biting babies/toddlers? ⭐Teething! Babies often 'gum' us when they are first teething but as soon as they get teeth, it hurts! They still have the same need as before though - relief from that teething pain. Don't react to the bite, just gently move your body part away and replace with a teether. ⭐Sensory seeking behaviour. This basically means that your little one likes the feeling of biting something and wants to do it again and again! Again, keep calm, don't give a reaction and replace with a teether or similar. ⭐Big feelings. It's really hard for little ones to process big feelings and they can get easily overwhelmed. This is the case for excitement, anger, frustration, joy... The important thing to remember is that in these moments, it isn't the logical part of our child's brain that's in control, it's the primal reptilian brain that's in charge and reacting on impulse. ❗"But ignoring the behaviour isn't helping!" If you find that ignoring the biting isn't working, you can start to add in some verbal validation too (this works better for older babies, toddlers and preschoolers). Identify the feeling for them: Say "You're feeling...(sad, angry, excited etc.)" Acknowledge that the feeling is ok, and then simply say "But it's not ok to bite" and distract/move onto another activity. If the biting occurs when your child is with other children, apologise to the child who has been bitten and check they are ok but continue to keep the response calm and neutral for your own child. Remember, they aren't doing it on purpose! It's that impulsive repitilian brain that's ruling the roost! Biting is a phase like any other and your child WILL stop in time. In the meantime, try not to stress because YOU are doing a brilliant job. ❤

What to do when your baby starts biting. It is bound to happen at some stage. At tummies full of love – we love each bite given. But the parents of biting toddlers do not share the same sentiment. With a red face and an embarrassed heart we as parents often do not understand this behaviour and it can cause feelings of despair and powerlessness. Breastfeeding and biting This is a concern for many breastfeeding parents. What happens when my baby gets teeth? Generally, its not a problem. If a baby is actively feeding their tongue should cover the lower teeth and so they cannot bite. And if they do it is REALLY PAINFUL! So ideally we want to prevent them from doing it. Many babies clamp down at the end of the feed when the flow has slowed and they get a bit bored. So look for signs of baby becoming distracted and take them off the breast before they do it. Some babies clamp down at the start of the feed. Either this is because they actually don't want a feed,in which case try again later. Or they are frustrated waiting for the let-down, in which case some breast compressions to keep them interested. If your baby does clamp down, the easiest way to get them to let go is to bring them closer in to the breast so nose is buried and they have to open their mouth to breathe. If you try to just pull them off you'll just drag their teeth down your breast. Ouch! Babies don't understand that they are hurting you. In fact sometimes they find it quite amusing if you yelp and make a funny noise when they do it. Sometimes this means they'll do the same thing again to see if they can get you to do the same funny noise again! The good news is that this is usually a very temporary phase!

💗 Be kind to yourself – breast refusal can be really challenging to deal with, bringing up unjust feelings of helplessness, failure and/or rejection. 💗 It’s hard, but be patient - breast refusal is usually temporary and often resolves before you are even able to pinpoint the exact cause. 💗 Use your supports – reach out to family, friends, your midwife or IBCLC- If the breast refusal is ongoing, it’s a good idea to get bub checked out with your GP or paediatrician to ensure they aren’t sick. Biting can be a reason mothers may choose to end their breastfeeding journey, but it doesn't have to be!  Find out why your baby is biting first so you can try to resolve that issue, and save your nips!😁 👄Teething? Try offering them plenty of things to chew on or alleviate their soreness from teething pain. Ideas include: Frozen washcloths or teething rings, rubber toys, ice or frozen fruit in a mesh feeder, cold pieces of fruits or veggies if they are 6 months and already eating solids. 🐵Playful? Set aside play time with your baby so they get their special solo time with mama, and will understand the difference between this and nursing for eating. If they are play biting, calmly say no and end the nusing session, as they are probably no longer hungry. 💤Sleepy? If your baby bites right before they doze off to sleep, end the feeding, as they are most likely just nursing for comfort. If this causes distress, try to ensure they stay away during feeding and then offer something else that brings them comfort: a blanket, toy, pacifier, rocking, reading, etc. 😾Frustrated? If they show signs of frustration, it could be that your flow of milk (or letdown) is either too slow/taking too long OR too fast. If it's the first, you could try some hand expression before or while they are nursing to help increase the flow of milk. What else worked for your biting babies??

9/13/2021, 10:17:06 PM

If you haven’t been bitten, know that not all babies end up biting. If you have been bitten, the first step is often to determine if baby is biting out of pain from teething or if baby is biting because of milk flow preference (or boredom). Often, looking at the timing of when baby is biting can lead to helpful clues in figuring out why baby is biting.⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣ Some things to consider: when does baby bite? Beginning of the feed? Baby may need to chew on a teether or cold washcloth to relieve sore gums before a feeding. End of the feed when flow slows? Try doing compressions to prompt a stronger flow of milk. You may have to be extra diligent in watching baby's behavior and catch them before they bite. ⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣ How do you react when you get bitten? Are you crying out? Some babies find it hilarious and it becomes a game. If mom doesn't react, calmly ends the feeding and sets baby down, the 'game' loses its appeal. ⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣ Also keep in mind that your baby can’t bite while actively nursing as the tongue covers the lower teeth. Watch your little one carefully for any cues and unlatch before baby can bite down. Does baby give a little side-eye and smile right before biting down? That’s your cue to unlatch. Consistently stopping it before it happens usually ends the behavior in a few days.⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣ Here are some ideas that have helped other moms: • Try calling baby's name rather than saying “No.” It may attract his/her attention and distract baby long enough for you to intervene. “No" is fine too, if necessary.⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣ • Have something to hand for biting on (teether, cold washcloth, breastmilk popsicle etc)—biting itself isn't wrong, only biting your breast—and say, "If you want to nurse, don't bite. If you want to bite, bite this."⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣ • Try changing breasts: sometimes a baby is frustrated by a slower flow but nurses properly on the other breast.⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣ • Give baby a chance to reposition, paying attention to the latch as you did when baby was a newborn: wide mouth, tongue forward, chin into the breast. • Nurse somewhere calm and quiet for a bit. Nurse baby in a carrier or swaying side to side. Movement can really help! 📷: @sanai_corri
