Here is the story… When I was 22, I found out my first boyfriend was seeing another girl at the same time. My world was turned upside down 😨💔 It was the pre-cell phone era. Since he wouldn’t talk to me, I called his mom on a public payphone with my shakey hands in the lobby of Hunter College North Building to verify, “Hi, auntie, you knew about his other girlfriend. How come you didn’t say anything?” She said, “Well, I don’t like her. I was hoping he would choose you.” 😳 Bye, mess! The next few months, I was in a deep hole 🕳️ of depression. I was eyeing the PATH train train track every morning thinking maybe not existing was not a bad idea. Summer came, I turned 23. Some awareness in me made me write this on a napkin ✍🏼 as a reminder: 23 𝘐𝘧 𝘐 𝘥𝘰𝘯’𝘵 𝘭𝘦𝘵 𝘨𝘰 𝘐 𝘢𝘮 𝘰𝘯𝘭𝘺 𝘩𝘰𝘭𝘥𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘰𝘯 𝘵𝘰 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘱𝘢𝘴𝘵 𝘐 𝘢𝘮 𝘢𝘭𝘴𝘰 𝘩𝘰𝘭𝘥𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘣𝘢𝘤𝘬 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘧𝘶𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘦 Who knew that napkin would would be a useful reminder for more than one occasion in my life! 📷. Peaceful defiance turned into brutal repression as the day at NYU’s Gould Plaza unfolded yesterday. Organizers of @nyu_sjp took over the plaza in an act of solidarity with students at @cuapartheiddivest who began an encampment on the south lawn last week that led to over 100 arrests at Columbia University. That arrest being the first time police were on campus since 1968. Both protests an act of resistance against the reported Palestinian genocide by and university’s ties with Israel. Hundreds showed up throughout the day in support of the students at NYU. Faculty members would show up and surround the encampment to protect protestors. NYU would eventually call the NYPD in to arrest faculty and students. Over 150 arrests were said to have been made. Police would violently apprehend protestors, even macing a journalist from New York University. The most violent of the NYPD being members of the Strategic Response Group unleashed by NYU. Protestors would march in to jail support outside One Police Plaze where several NYPD buses were filled with the teachers, students and more. A call for peace on college grounds was once again met with force. One has to wonder what price will we may pay if students and teachers being attacked by the police is allowed to keep happening. By the fact more encampments have now sprung up within the city and country, the use of force doesn’t appear to be working. Will leaders and representatives keep using the threat of police violence or will places like NYU finally listen to what is being said about Palestine?
