This lady and I recall the days of acting reels on VHS tapes. Back in my days of casting with Bernie Telsey I recall my favorite lunch hour activity. I’d pull out the box of VHS Actor Reels that had been mailed with stamps to our office. I’d drag up a TV monitor, open up my lunch, and start popping in the VHS tapes. One after another. How many can I get through in an hour…and GO!! On VHS tape you can’t easily skip ahead or even rewatch. You have to start from the beginning and if it captures your interest, you keep playing it. If not, press stop and pop that baby out. Then I’d sort the tapes into piles of interest (yes, no, maybe). It was tedious! But. So fun to meet so many new faces. And even more exciting to potentially meet the actor in an audition right for them. (Casting is matchmaking.) I loved watching those VHS tapes. Watching you acting is a treat for everyone. We look forward to getting a glimpse of your work when we can. Share it! Make those Portfolio Channels that I love to blog about and to teach in class. Create work that shows off your skills, talents, and tell the stories you care about. Develop your artistry in every self tape. It’s such a treat to see you grow. Now that I’ve educated myself further, I also won’t be speaking about projects that I might be excited to see any longer, as these companies certainly don’t need free promotion while refusing to pay the artists who make these works a reality. I am so blessed to be able to announce that I have been chosen as a member of LOVE ALL, a new play by @annadeaveresmith at @lajollaplayhouse . Not only am I part of a fantastic cast…I get to play Arthur Ashe! We started rehearsals last week, and things have been moving so fast, I’ve only JUST had a chance to share the news. This ambitious, powerful and educational story is one that is truly requiring all of my focus as I learn more about the legacy’s of Billie Jean King, Arthur Ashe, Althea Gibson, and other tennis legends who fought for equality and civil rights. It is an honor to soak in the depth of knowledge and creativity flowing in these rehearsal rooms. I can’t wait to share it with all of you! In the midst of a writers strike, I can’t help but think of all the wonderful opportunities (including this one) I’ve had to work with writers on new productions. It’s an honor to be in the room with Anna Deveare Smith as this play evolves right before my eyes. Writers everywhere are invaluable to actors and the arts. They deserve fair pay for stage, film and television work. Period. I thank God not just for the opportunity to return to the stage after a long break; but, also for the escape to San Diego. As I have been on a journey of renewal this year, I’m doing my best to continue to find artistic and spiritual growth during this time away. To see the West Coast for the first time and experience more of this beautiful earth God has created, is priceless. I am filled with so much gratitude for this chapter of my life. Chris Farely's parents helped me get to the next level! Let me explain... #throwbackthursdayyy I took this photo on my first day at @thesecondcity. I have a superstition. If I get a piece of info from at least 3 different sources, I follow up. Second City was suggested me three times. 1. A coworker told me what it was. 2. A month later a fellow actor I met on set mentioned it. 3. 4 months later Chris Farley's parents became my regulars at Outback Steakhouse. I had just done w commercial and they told me they saw it. Then his mother told me "You should check out Second City. Our son Chris was already talented but things really hit it for him when he went there. I enrolled that night! I was actually supposed to be in the episode before this. My very first audition was for background, but I got promoted to day player! You couldn't tell me nothing. I expected to be called by phone for my details. No call. They emailed. I missed my day.
