Dev Patel begins his directorial debut by placing himself as the leading actor in this one man army revenge story in the mould of film characters such as ‘John Wick’. However, despite taking a different cultural approach and a more harrowing backstory, ‘Monkey Man’ fails to match the levels of similar lone wolf predecessors. Unlike ‘John Wick’ and similar films where the context of the plot is laid to us before the action kicks in, here the story is allowed to run without any knowledge of why Kid (Dev Patel) is seeking such revenge. Eventually throughout the story it becomes uncovered as to why through snippets of flashbacks that reveal more and more that ultimately justify the pain you can see administered through the well performed Patel’s eyes. Nonetheless, I found this was detrimental to the movie, it’s always good to see something different but here I found it hard to root for the protagonist in the first act. The context of the revenge is so powerful that if revealed earlier would have had me zoned in way more than I was. Also the film had a strange tone at times as naturally it has dark and gritty moments but also thanks in part to Alphonso (Pitabhash Tripathi) there was plenty of comedy, while the comedy was quite entertaining it created a confusing overall tone at times. On the flip side of this Dev Patel offers a committed performance while also directing a film that offers something slightly different to the genre it lies in, strong fight sequences and good editing. Overall, this film was not for me but it's not a bad film by any imagination. Despite a well rounded performance from Patel in acting and directing I was unable to invest in the story as much as the alternative army of one movie characters partly due to the slow release of the contextual background here. Dev Patel's directorial debut is an action-packed, violent revenge film, which is incredibly well choreographed, but leaves something to be desired in it's camera-work. This film's heavy use of shakey-cam in the first half really takes away from what was clearly some extremely impressive stunt-work, but I just could not see what was going on at times. Fortunately, in the second half the camera movement really smooths out once the character has an epiphany, which I'm grateful for because the final sequence is incredible. This film definitely gets props for some incredibly original ideas and sequences, and the soundtrack was really great too. Dev Patel also showed off his chops as an action star, and honestly, killed it. What can't he do? Ever wanted to see Gary Busey (Point Break) smear vaseline on a stick of dynamite and shove it up a biker's arse? No, nor me. But here we are, with Action April movie #25 - Eye Of The Tiger (1986) from director Richard Sarafian (Vanishing Point). "Doing that time in there didn't do a damn thing for you, did it? You were an asshole then and you're a 'bigger' asshole now!" This is pure nonsense. Nothing is properly explained about the plot. From what I could gather, Busey is released early from prison alongside a white-suited Tony Montana knockoff, who later provides him with a special modified van when his wife is murdered and daughter kidnapped by a 'biker gang'. "You made a big mistake. Never scratch dry shit!" There are zero motives for anyone's actions and Yaphet Kotto (Alien) seems rightfully embarrassed to be here. One of the worst films I've ever seen. Lately it seems as if Guy Ritchie is releasing movies like his life depends on it. His latest film here highlights some of the ways his trademark style can breathe energy into a story, but also how his scripts can sometimes overwrite themselves. When this movie acts as a historical drama, it’s merely serviceable. The fundamental plot points are clear but some of the details can get blurred into a convoluted mess. When this movie embraces itself as a mindless action flick, however, it is a ton of fun. Ritchie’s witty dialogue compliments the unapologetic violence perfectly. The entire cast delivers in their respective performances. Henry Cavill is obviously the most notable as the leading character, but Eiza González is deserving of recognition for stealing scenes with an effortless charm. I do think this is a solid movie that’s on par for Guy Ritchie’s brand, but unfortunately I don’t think there’s much that makes this stand out as special from the director’s already deep filmography. It’s one of those movies where if you’re interested, you should see it.
