Hello Gardening Friends, What a busy weekend. It feels so good to be out in the cool weather working all day long. It reminds me of my time spent working golf courses. This weekend, I partially paid for math tutoring by spring cleaning a front yard, installed bolt and locks on the greenhouse doors, potted up bok choy, lettuces, kale and spinach, managed to tidy up the garage and seeded 6 cucumbers for the greenhouse, a dozen fennel and 4 dozen corn for my first crops in the garden. My year of experimenting had me covering the rhubarb to try forcing. The bin will sit over the rhubarb for 8 weeks, making the stems sweeter. This technique is hard on plant, so much so, that it will need a season or two to recover. I am looking forward to some rhubarb crisp (and gin). I will keep you posted on how it turns out. Mulch has many benefits for your ornamental garden: Mulch absorbs water, slowly releasing moisture as it dries out Mulch slows down the passage of water Mulch reduces evaporation and slows the rate of evaporation Acts as a protective layer over the soil, especially in the colder months Suppresses weeds for a while and it’s easier to remove weeds from mulched areas Supports improvement of clay soil over time Gives a tidy appearance, refreshes an area very easily Things to bear in mind: Apply a good layer, to 5cm deep Avoid the black mulch which is dyed and offers little nutritional value. Black mulch also attracts heat, drying out the top layer of soil quicker Avoid mulch resting against the trunk/stems of your plants

The genus Piper produces crystoliths by expelling calcium oxalate to regulate excess calcium and (to a lesser degree) heavy metals buildup within the plant. These crystals also have oxalic acid that helps deter herbivore pests. These crystals are are expelled through pores and eventually oxideizes and turns black over time. Here’s some additional information about deadheading and cut flower care: ✂️ Deadheading encourages more flowering and toward the end of the bloom cycle, leave the old flowers to produce seed pods to allow them to self sow or sow purchased seeds in the fall to yield a fresh crop next spring. For cut flowers, harvest the buds just as they are cracking and showing a little colour.
