Lesson learned: I'm just gonna keep my tripod in my car. I went to Sedona early today for a sunrise portrait session. I got there early, got out of my car, and realized it's apparently Milky Way season. I didn't have a tripod or anything, so this is the best I could do balancing my camera on my roof rack in the parking lot. #ArcadiaWildflowerProject photos from the past couple days. I put a macro lens on my iPhone to capture huge closeups of ladybugs in the garden and some flowers. I also included a shot of the ladybug with the normal iPhone camera, it’s the size of a lupine seed! Amazingly they didn’t fly away because you almost have to be touching them to get this shot. Also got a shot at the end of my daughter and a massive poppy she picked. #ladybug #azwildflowerwatch

So tonight was a fun treat for a space nerd who lives out in the deserts of Phoenix, far away from any space program. I’ve been trying to capture this SpaceX launch from Vanderbilt Air Force Base for years but the timing never worked out. Today I was finally able to get a shot of the rocket and with the 400mm lens too! I remembered just at 7:30 pm that today was the 4th attempted launch after a scrubbed attempt Friday, Saturday and Sunday The 7:30 pm launch puts it at the most ideal time for it to be visible in our skies. So I checked X and saw that it launched 2 minutes prior. I told the kids to get their shoes on and went and grabbed my camera gear and ran outside and there it was. I fumbled around with the camera for way too long and then it moved behind trees so I had to run into the alley, but it was still enough time to capture this shot. 1/6 second exposure which was long enough that you can see the streak the SpaceX rocket makes while the bright dots are stars (and the stars are dots and not streaks too). If you haven’t heard by now, the rocket is so high up that the setting sun is able to light up the emissions from the rocket and it glows bright white for a few moments. SpaceX Launch 7:35 pm. This week I did 3 astronomy events for #grayhawkelementary in Scottsdale. Two in-class events where I showed meteorites and discussed galaxies, nebulas, our Sun and Moon, and a night event where I projected images from my telescope onto a screen for the kids to see. It's always a delight to see their interested faces and hear their questions. Wildflower photo dump. I’m taking probably 25-50+ photos a day of the #ArcadiaWildflowerProject because every hour the lightning is different. Every day the scene changes. New blooms emerge. The plants get taller. New insects come out to explore. Wild animals interact. The changes are not noticeable unless you are really paying attention. And they are fast. Here one second, gone the next. The typical poppy bloom lasts 2-3 days, then the pedals falls off and it starts its process of generating seeds to help it live to another year. That’s the beauty of this garden. It’s nature running its course. Replanting its own seeds. Choosing where the next batch of flowers will be but never around to see the next generation grow. In the deserts it can be as long as 6-7 years before we get another rain like we’ve had the last 2 years. And so the seeds wait until the timing is right and they can bloom again. Unlike the wide open deserts, in the Arcadia Wildflower Project, it can be guaranteed that every year those seeds will get the water they need to grow. #wildflowers
