⛰️The Waterberg Plateau up close is truly spectacular. Geologically, the oldest rock stratum is over 850 million years old, and there are even dinosaur tracks over 200 million years old in the area. The fauna and overwhelmingly green flora on and around the plateau is equally beautiful and somewhat out of place in the otherwise arid Namibia. Die Donauinsel – kurz auch die „Insel“ genannt – ist eine zwischen 1972 und 1988 errichtete, 21,1 km lange und bis zu 250 m breite künstliche Insel zwischen der Donau und der einige Meter tiefer liegenden Neuen Donau im Stadtgebiet von Wien und Klosterneuburg. Anfangs als Hochwasserschutz gedacht ist sie heute auch ein beliebter Freizeitort. Hier kann man baden, ganz im Norden und ganz im Süden (Lobau) auch nackt. Absolutely the BEST hostel I stayed in EVER. I love how remote it is, love that none of their door is banging* and that they have carpets on floors so you don't hear every step** *my YHA Grasmere dorm room had a sticky door and you have to forcibly bang it to shut it. Quite annoying when you are trying to sleep and people are still coming to the room past midnight. ** YHA Boggle hole had bare floor boards but I kinda understand since they are literally on the beach and they forever have to vacuum sand from their carpets. 🦜 What is there to do at NWR Waterberg Plateau Resort?? This beautiful camp is built on the shoulder of the plateau and boasts stunning views of the eastern Namibian Kalahari for kilometres. The quaint historical main building was a German police station and is to be valued as a heritage building in it’s own right. It houses the restaurant, bar and outdoor seating area under luscious trees where one can relax with an ice cold beer and birdwatch or enjoy the silence of nature. The resort also has numerous hiking and walking trails, but unfortunately self-drive game viewing is not allowed and guests can rather opt to take a guided game viewing tour in the morning or late afternoon. Birdwatching is a must, as the resort plays host to over 200 bird species with some rare birds visiting the plateau to breed during the rainy season.
