Spring is here 🌸🌷 I’ve always loved this time of year. For lots of reasons, but definitely because it signaled the end of the school year. Ive spent most of my life either as a student or a teacher and the vibe just shifts in late April/early May. There’s not so much to quantify, anymore. State testing is usually over, seniors are on the way out, and there’s some respite waiting in the soon to be summer vacation. It’s interesting, as much as I love that open feeling, I think I was attracted to teaching for the opposite. I think I have traveled to every state and nearly every national park for, at least in part, the opposite feeling. You see, the truest me loves to quantify. I love to have a specific goal to measure myself against. I need to tell myself that the goal is to have ___% of my students reaching ___ level by ___ day. I like to tell myself that I will visit all 63 major US National Parks by the time I’m 40 in 2025. Without that, I feel like an imposter. I feel like I’m not good enough at anything, really. Just going through the motions. And I don’t think I’m wrong for feeling that, necessarily. But what I have been thinking is that I want to bring more of this spring feeling into my life. Whether the calendar reflects it or not. I want to be comfortable and even joyful and in awe of these in betweens. The hard or even impossible to quantify. The ones that just feel… right.

Time for a lil #vanlife! The Frenchman and I rented a campervan in Seville and headed for the hills! We spent a couple of days doing some short hikes (because one can never *not* hike if Piu is around!) and explored an amazing cave, Cueva del Hundidero near Ronda in the Sierras de Grazalema. The wildflowers along the way were absolutely spectacular - carpets of royal red poppies, purple flowering sage and spiky thistle, sparkling white rosehip and sunshine yellow Scotch broom and buttercups (thanks, #Pl@ntNet!) Another afternoon, we hiked near the Camino del Rey through a gorgeous canyon - loved the chalky blue-green waters of the Conde de Guadalhorce reservoir and the bluebird skies! Piu found wonderful and peaceful spots to park overnight overlooking the sea, in the quiet forest and in the shadow of the mountains. Summited Acatenango at night…not my best summit picture…but one of my most challenging moments as of yet. So many summits…but hiking this terrain was a pain in the a$$. For every step I took I was sinking and sliding back. The weather didn’t allow any views, literally walking in a cloud at night. Jerash was another place we have been wanting to go. It wouldn't be worth a trip on its own but if you are in Jordan it is worth the hour drive from Amman. A spralling area built by the Romans, my favorite area was the theater. It was quite steep and the seats uncomfortable! 😆 [pics 1-3] They even had earthquake prevention tactics when building their pillars. Jordan was a welcome change to Egypt. You could walk the streets and markets without getting harrassed, enjoy a local meal at a restaurant, get fresh squeezed juice and we even saw Overlanding vehicles! Another difference is their currency, the Dinar is stronger than the USD. So it was actually expensive to go out. They also rarely will take USD. So make sure you have their currency. They still have some of the original nomad tribes here. The Bedouin. They raise sheep and goats, living in tents as they roam where their herd needs to be. Camels [pic 4 with babies!] are well taken care of as they are worth a lot for their milk and babies. They are not hired for rides of any sort. Our tour guide asked us to not ride any animals while in Jordan. She said it would be more civilized to never ride. I love the translation discrpencies sometimes but it worked perfectly here. The view from the top of Crowders Mountain, NC 💚 Crowders Mountain is a monadnock, an isolated mountain in an essentially level area. It means that even though it isn’t really high, it offers a breathtaking view on the surrounding area. Crowders Mountain is situated not too far from Charlotte, making this a fairly busy trail, but for us, it was the perfect quick hike before heading to South Carolina, just a few miles further south! / La vue depuis le sommet de Crowders Mountain en Caroline du Nord 💚 Le mont Crowders est un inselberg, c’est-à-dire un mont isolé dans une plaine. Ce qui signifie que même si la montagne n’est pas très haute, elle offre une superbe vue sur la région environnante. It’s been raining. The trail was muddy. There were mushrooms. Some flowers didn’t even want to open. I found a rather large pile of fresh-ish scat. There’s a new (new to me) parking lot for this trailhead. I went outside because I wanted to. I was also hoping that some movement would remedy some annoying lower back pain (thank you monthly cycle). It didn’t. It was more discomfort than I was willing to hike in today. So, a half mile into trail I turned around. From 19 miles away I took my gracious Vegas hosts @chefvivica & geoff on a 4.6-mile bluebird Sunday afternoon hike of Turtlehead Peak, a 6,017 ft. Peak on the Northwestern mountain skyline of Vegas in the @redrockcanyonlv. With 2,000 ft. of elevation gain this was no walk in the park, but spring was alive on a mild 70 degree day in the mountains. Family Friendly Hike with Gorgeous Views LESS then an hour from Denver 📍Pulpit Rock Trail is a popular hiking trail in Colorado Springs, Colorado. It is a 2 mile out and back trail that offers scenic views of the city and the surrounding mountains. The trail is relatively easy, with some steep and rocky sections, but it is well-maintained and easy to follow. The main attraction of the Pulpit Rock Trail is the panoramic view from the top of Pulpit Rock. Hello friends! Happy Sunday! Recently, we were able to hike the Twin Falls trail in Tennessee! Swipe to see all the pics! Twin Falls is a cascade waterfall that spills down from a cavern. This waterfall was created by the Great Falls Dam, which caused the Collins River to rise. So essentially, Twin Falls is man made! It's a very popular destination for both locals and tourists for hiking and kayaking! It was still chilly out when we were there, but that didn't stop the kayakers! It's a great day to treat your pet for a hike. If your buddy is fit enough and well trained, a walk can make a dog very happy. They love to check out the sights and smells and will really look forward to spending time with you. It's a great way to build a bond with your fur baby. Some things to remember: 1. Some trails allow pets but want them to be on a leash. Always make sure to look up trail information first to be sure. 2. Bag your pet's waste. It wasn't there before you arrived, it doesn't need to be there after. Leaving behind waste could damage trails. 3. Bring pet essentials. This includes plenty of water and snacks. It may also include footwear, sunscreen, insect repellent, a pet first aid kit, or goggles for your buddy. 4. Respect wildlife. You can give your pet training, like Rattlesnake training so they can smell a Rattlesnake and retreat from them.
