One of my clients has just won a new client worth £69k ARR!!!! I don’t know who needs to hear this, but…Please, for the love of all that is good and holy, charge what you are worth. If you are virtue-signaling by under-charging, it might be time to examine your relationship with the Divine. Also consider the possibility you need to get your ego in check. The benevolent cosmic forces that positioned us to share our gifts with the world do not want us to go without. It is our ego that tells us we are not enough, not Spirit. The ego is always trying to keep us safe, and will do so by any means necessary. It is not always grandiose. The ego also also tells us that we are smaller than we are, that we should expect less. Something else finally made it on my wall. I made the "Sewer's Hourly Rate" back in May 2019 right in the midst of dealing with the absolute worst bridezilla in 20 years. The bridezilla that spit on me, brought an entourage to verbally attack me, that refused to pay for almost 40 hours of work, that my husband had to step in and act as a moderator with, and that traumatized my children. This would also be the bridezilla that made me stop accepting clients. I finished out 2019...with my soul barely in tact. My stepmom bought me the wood plaque. Both made it on the wall tonight. Knowing what to charge as a VA when you're just starting out can seem really difficult. It is tempting to start low, but here's why you shouldn't. The average cost per hour of a VA in 2021 was £27. Does your current pricing light you up? Currently, from who you are today? Your ability to be all in on what you're charging communicates much more than you realize to the market and to the client. When you charge what you're worth, you are teaching others to do the same. When you assess your offer and pricing based upon what is in alignment vs. what the market will bear, you position yourself as a leader in your space. You are leading your market on how to value themselves, get the results you promise, and you lead by example. People come into your life for a reason. Anna is one of them. I will always be grateful to her. So! 9.5 hours of work, over 2 days getting rid of artificial color on the mid shaft and ends to get her hair to a silver, grey, white blend. We also did day1 and day2 platinum card techniques. She was MASSIVELY undervaluing herself! I knew it. She knew it. But her inner critic was telling her she couldn't charge more I'm not an expect in calculating fees for this type of project, but I knew someone who was and referred her to that expert And the good news? Increasing your prices may also increase the revenue for your business. If you increase them by a few percent it is unlikely that your customers will leave for a few percentage increase. They would value the work you do form them too much. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Increasing prices means charging what you are worth. It means having a system in place that you can price every piece of work that you do. It is systemised and consistent. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ It may mean that you charge on an hourly rate or you may charge on the value that you add to your customers business. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ But the way you charge needs to have a system behind it and something that you can explain and show to your client how you charge. This is a question which so many people have when they start their own business. And the answer is — how much do you want to earn? You need to decide how much you want to earn, and then work out a way to get there (read last weeks post about factoring in your salary). It’s not necessarily about working harder, but working smarter. Can you charge by the hour, day, or project? And if you do that, have you factored in all your admin time per day? Do you know how many hours you need to charge to reach your goal? Have you thought about the different income streams that are possible for you and the industry that you are in? Can you create and sell a product along with your service for example? Can you create a couple of new services that people would really find useful, or can you turn 1 service into 2? And have you identified any ways that you can generate a passive income i.e making money while you sleep? A pre-made course, a digital product, a membership for example. Can you outsource anything, so you do less yourself but earn more? This is often something people don’t think about. Working out how much you can earn just means asking yourself lots of questions, thinking about where you want to be, working out what is acceptable to you, and what you are able and prepared to put in to get you there. Is there anything you’ve been doing that you think you could be doing smarter? (Is it smarter or more smart? If you know, please tell me as neither sound right 🤷🏻‍♀️)

VALUE: Part III- How we value the arts.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ (First, this is the interior of a Minoru Yamasaki building in Detroit, Michigan.) The past few weeks have brought up some issues that most artists face, including pricing, copyright & compensation. These topics can be deeply frustrating & discouraging. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ "We can pay you in exposure." If you're an artist, how many times have you heard some version of this? What is it about art/artists that makes exposure seem like an appropriate form of compensation? It doesn't pay the bills. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I have a very CLEAR idea why. It starts within our education system. In most cases, art is considered a 'special', but expendable subject area. I had a short career as an art teacher (long story). The way my classroom was treated, as a craft supply store, a dumping ground for students & a place to go for free work from my students & I, I can assure you this is where the problem starts. If we don't model the arts as a serious subject, why would someone grow up to accept a path in the arts as something valid or worthy? (Btw, when teachers sent their students to me for supplies, I told them to come back with a blank check. That was fun.)⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Many of us understand that the arts should hold the same importance as other 'core' subjects. In fact, there has been a movement to change 'S.T.E.M.' (Science, Technology, Engineering & Math) to 'S.T.E.A.M'. The A = Art. Art is not a supporting role. I challenge you to look around right now. VALUE: Part I ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Can we talk value? If you support artists/designers/makers, etc., there are value based issues of which to be aware. The word value is 2 fold here, monetary & belief based. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ First, the image here is a sculpture on the lawn of the Detroit Institute of Arts, called Gracehopper, by Tony Smith. Large, it's about 20' tall x 40' wide. In college, I'd sit under it, sketching, writing & thinking about the challenges of being an artist.... something from which I would not run. It felt sheltering, like being protected under an umbrella.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The past few weeks have brought up issues most artists face, including pricing, copyright & compensation. These topics can be frustrating & discouraging. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ It's important to keep these things in mind as advocates for artists. As an indie business, I've crossed paths with lots of small/indie, handmade, handcrafted, (etc.) product businesses. In my experience, a large number of them under price their work. Especially in the Midwest, where I'm located. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ This a problem. It doesn't set them up to be a financially sustainable business. It may cause overwork & overwhelm, needing to produce more in order to make ends meet. On the other hand, artists that price their work appropriately are made to appear as if they're overpricing their work and are 'expensive'. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ How can you spot this? Consider if there are mass produced versions of the product. For instance, an illustration print. How much is the business selling it for & how much do large businesses that mass produce sell something like it? Is it fair to be at a similar price point? Some say yes, the market sets the price, but these businesses are NOT in the same market. I have many examples, but not enough space here. Please share your thoughts in the comments!

I'm going to leave this right here. One of my followers sent this too me based on my post from yesterday and I explained to her that this is exactly what I try to get people to understand!! You only get what you are willing to put out. You want your business to grow...stop being afraid to invest in yourself (your brand), you want a bigger following...start following and showing love to your peers. When I started there was not a single soul out there who was willing to teach or share tips with me even if money was being offered. I was often ignored and had many doors slammed in my face. As result, I ended up spending thousands teaching myself investing in product/supplies that half of the time I didn't even know how to use. I worked a full-time job to finance my dream and also went to school. I continued to network and show love every time the opportunity knocked. Fast forward to today. I am a 6-figure earner (all facts..ask folks who know me personally), I am the owner of two LLCS, and I am in a position to support other small businesses by donating once a week. Unlike many of the ones before me I do not mind helping others. Do I charge?? Yes!! Why because I'm running a business. When you learn techniques and put your product together you will most definitely charge your customers correct?? Why?? Because you are running a business. Keep these things in mind the next time you get the urge to question someone about why they are charging for their services.
