Chasing the egg rainbow takes patience. I thought I’d have some dark, rich, chocolate colored eggs by this spring. All 3 of the Black Copper Marans I hatched last year turned out to be Roosters!!! (See second slide🤦🏻♀️) I am, however, pleased with my Olive layers from @chickps_creek & @open_gate_farm, as well as my Ameraucana layer from Open Gate Farm. I should share more about my chicken breeding here, but the truth is, I often don’t know where to start because it’s hard for me to break things into small parts - I’ve been breeding chickens for… I don’t know how many years now. Quite a few years ago I started with chickens as many of you did - I wanted some chickens for the eggs so I got some brown hens off Kijiji and my husband built me a coop big enough for 12 chickens 😂 It seemed like a good idea at the time, but neither of us factored in #chickenmath or the world of naturally coloured eggs. I was just excited to get eggs that weren’t white at the time. I started venturing into finding some barnyard mix chicks that would lay coloured eggs… but most of them laid kind of muddy, pale greens. Which is pretty - but how could I get an egg rainbow?! Many hours of research, dollars, and hundreds of miles driving across the province later (and a steep incubator learning curve) I hatched out a myriad of chicks. Unfortunately… some of the chicks hatched out mixed breed, even when promised that they were pure. Hatches from shipped eggs were mostly dismal: once I hatched out only one chicks from 2 dozen very expensive eggs… and it turned out to be a cockerel. Some eggs I received were very porous and super tiny for the breed. Some chicks I hatched out were sickly. Some chicks grew well, but were really stupid as adults, or had chronic health issues like constant sour crops (only the pullets from that specific batch of eggs). I was cranky. And tired of spending money on subpar chickens, even when promised good quality. I felt used and abused by people claiming to have excellent birds. I’ll share more another day of how I got from there to here - but I have not added any new genetics this year and I finally feel like I won’t have to any more for a long time. My birds lay beautiful eggs, don’t get sick, are winter hardy, friendly, good at evading predators, and I’m damn proud of them. #chickenbreeding #chasingtheeggrainbow

Let lockdown commence!! The eggs have been candled again, divided out by darkness, and set for lockdown. Lockdown starts 2-3 days before hatch. We take the eggs out of the automatic turners, and we separate them into bags based on egg darkness and Standards of Perfection. We also increase the humidity of the incubator for ideal hatching conditions. Then… we wait! Ever crossed paths with a broody hen? Our French Black Copper Marans ladies are pretty mild-mannered when it comes to their broodiness. At most they’ll fuss at you, fluff up, and you may get an occasional half-hearted peck but that is very seldom. Their docile behavior is just another reason why we enjoy this breed so much. I am so excited about how wonderful and effortless the egg painting was this year...we did hot eggs and eggs that sat in ice water and the color stayed the same ...we used 4-5 different egg colors from Easter eggers to olive eggers to various shares of cream and brown ...just like the ones in the natural colored bowl and all turned out great...never buying another store egg again... Each hen lays her own unique signature egg. Who knew? I discovered this after not collecting eggs for a few days and placing them side by side. When I introduce my coop to visitors I’m able to grab an egg then point to the hen that laid it. They’re amazed but it’s nbd I’m just familiar with the egg shape and color.
