We have chicks again! 🐥 Went into Peavey Mart today intending to pre-order chicks. To my surprise, they had 2 day old chicks in the store for sale, so we got to bring some home today! 🐥 IDK what breed they are because even the sales person in the store told me the advertising was bs and the breed names were just made up, lol. I feel like I am bursting with excitement and apprehension at what I am about to type.... . Rainbow eggs 🥚🐔🐓🤍💚🩵🧡 Eventually I want to add Chocolate brown eggs to our rainbow (like what you get from Maran breed chickens, shown in 2nd picture) and pinks. Would be a nice bonus to have another blue layer and a layer to produce an even greener green (picture #3 is an example of what I am after, although rare, but that's partly why it is a goal I will strive to achieve. Keeping in mind my camera sucks, but I remember this haul, and my eye has gotten used to who's is who's . See the 3 green eggs. If you truly look closely there is the obvious mint green, but then the 2 lighter green eggs on top, the left one has the same warmer toned, minty hue still and actually the one on the right is a tiny bit lighter and has a "cooler" (aka bluey) undertone hue. That is because the 2 green eggs on the left are both Snowbird. The LIGHTEST green egg (cooler undertoned one) was McNugget. The stunning blue is Carole Bawkskin. **side note - YES both the chocolate coloured and deep green eggs in pictures 2 & 3 are real eggs, from real chickens, no they aren't filtered pictures. Nice egg haul last week 🥚🥚💚🩵🤍As you can see yes our eggs can sometimes get dirty. Not always! Just depends what these little dinosaurs are doing. My sister & I grew up on a hobby farm in the boonies, my parents & grandparents did things differently than I do now but I still learnt the most important fundamental things from them. Best way to keep your eggs clean: For one, you do want your chickens to have SEPERATE SPACES for laying than where they roost. If they roost where they lay they will get in the habit of popping on or near eggs in the coop. Also other hens walk around in there so aside from poop, mud can get on them, other hens can steal the eggs, they can even accidentally get stepped on and crushed You can clean the coop and laying boxes very regularly. Growing up our chickens DID NOT poop in the laying boxes at all , we could go huge periods of time not having to change the bedding in the laying boxes because of this....the barn and their covered run however was another story, but that was fine that's where we expected them to be pooping My partner and I have a different set up, our girls have also gotten bigger and increased laying since we first got them so of course we do plan on expanding and changing set up. For NOW they lay and roost in their coop same place. Every day when we grab the eggs out we scoop out any poop that might be in there or yucky bedding, keeping it as clean as possible, and weekly we do change everything out. Once we expand and have an actual laying area separate from their roosting sleeping area, we won't have to change things so much What do we do with the eggs when they are this dirty? You have options. I'm OLD SCHOOL - if you can't simply wipe the mess off with a dry cloth, and you HAVE to wash them, WATER AND LIGHT FINGER POWER ONLY! I have a thin dish scrub pad that I will lightly scrub them with if need be. IF YOU WASH THE EGGS THEY HAVE TO GO IN THE FRIDGE AFTER! Reason you can leave fresh unwashed eggs on your counter is because chicken eggs are coated in a special substance called the bloom. This goes on the eggs right before the egg leaves her vent. It seals the pores of the egg so air and bacteria stay out

Went out hunting for mushrooms but ended up on an Easter egg hunt! 🍄👀➡️🪺💙 No (edible) mushrooms today, but I found these beautiful blue eggs instead. They were sort of nestled inside a stump, quite low to the ground. I took a picture and then left, in case the parents were closeby (some birds will abandon their nests out of fear).
