What a craptastic day. Stormy low pressure days always wreak havoc on my brain pain as well as my joints. I'm officially that old lady that can sense when a storm is a comin' just by the feeling in my knees and knuckles. (Not to mention the pressure behind my eyes - I've had that trick for years). While I ride the struggle bus on some commissions, here's a throwback to this black capped chickadee friend that is back in my posession after chilling in a bake shop for the last couple of years. Tbh, I have trouble even writing about disappointment — that’s how much it prickles me. But I watch my students wrestle with it (especially in the season of college rejections), and I feel sort of amazed that we still try to push this one away — even more than fear, anger, and grief. A lot of times, because disappointment is not allowed, it morphs into a pesky second arrow: “I’m really not sure why I feel so bad! What is wrong with me!? It’s not that big a deal, and I didn’t want it that much anyway!” Like, you can’t ignore the feeling, but you also can’t name the feeling, so an elaborate dance of denying and making up excuses begins, and it lasts for SUCH a long time (because we all know emotions will stick around if you insist on trying to go around them rather than through them). Personally, I so rarely tell people that I’m trying or hoping to do something, because the idea of failing publicly is too much for me to bear. The secret is, the statement, “Wow, I feel really disappointed about this” is a powerful one. Once you name it, you can feel it; and once you feel it, it can release you. I hope you find people with whom it’s safe to experience this normal (if uncomfortable), human feeling, and who will hold you in it. . Onward! . Oh, and, uh, I’m just kind of playing around with bird drawings lately. To be clear, birds don’t make me disappointed, and also, it’s difficult to know what kinds of emotions animals feel. (I think they probably feel amazing, complex “emotions” that are unlike anything we humans can fathom; but it’s impossible to know.) I SORT OF apologize for all this bird content, but not REALLY. When I erased his face, I could still see the eyes on the paper. So, I chose to have the chickadee’s dark feathers on their faces cover the lion’s eyes! This is a repost of a fluffy friend that I had drawn awhile ago in charcoal. A friendly black capped chickadee that looks like it sprung from the illustrated pages of a fairytale. I had recently started hanging my illustrations so that I could look at them and be reminded that each work forms the basis of a story or a moment in life. As an artist who sometimes falls into creativity blocks, I have found that it helps me keep focus better. My creativity surrounds me rather then those same illustrations being quietly and secretly hidden away within the pages of my sketchbook. Moreover, seeing those pieces acts as motivation to create more and to explore my imagination. But it also serves as a reminder that each piece needs it due. Instagram reduces 17+ hours of work into 1 minute. Which is sometimes overwhelming in trying to keep up with the rigorous pace. To get better at art, that requires time and that is something that I sometimes become abruptly reminded about, especially as I get busy with life. So I am coming to terms with the fact that art isnt a mass produced thing, which means it's okay to spend that time and not agonize over super quick turnaround times. I'm making some progress on my little Chickadee. A few more hours of work actually. Working on drafting film is quite challenging but I love the softness. My tiny little eraser pen is probably my most important tool for creating details. It works so well for making wispy feathers. #chickadeeart #artoftheday
Occasionally, it can help for someone to give you permission to stop doing something that is taking up a lot of your energy. One of the trickiest things to quit is self-berating, since your brain tricks you into believing that being mean to yourself is motivating, or is equal to pushing yourself. But actually, you can push yourself without hurting yourself! Beating yourself up to accomplish things is a little like putting a ball and chain around your ankle in order to run faster. So anyway, I give you permission to stop telling yourself how much you suck. You can rest that particular muscle. I hope you will find that you have more energy than you knew. . I’m not quite ready to share my personal reasons for writing about this at this exact moment, but I’ll say (so mysteriously): I am trying to do something that’s really hard for me. I had been employing this language: “If I tried harder, I would be more successful, but I haven’t tried hard enough, so my failure is all my fault.” Last week I shifted to: “OK, it’s not working out the way I want it to. That’s OK. I’m going to keep trying, and maybe things will improve. Maybe they won’t!
