Tbh, I have trouble even writing about disappointment — that’s how much it prickles me. But I watch my students wrestle with it (especially in the season of college rejections), and I feel sort of amazed that we still try to push this one away — even more than fear, anger, and grief. A lot of times, because disappointment is not allowed, it morphs into a pesky second arrow: “I’m really not sure why I feel so bad! What is wrong with me!? It’s not that big a deal, and I didn’t want it that much anyway!” Like, you can’t ignore the feeling, but you also can’t name the feeling, so an elaborate dance of denying and making up excuses begins, and it lasts for SUCH a long time (because we all know emotions will stick around if you insist on trying to go around them rather than through them). Personally, I so rarely tell people that I’m trying or hoping to do something, because the idea of failing publicly is too much for me to bear. The secret is, the statement, “Wow, I feel really disappointed about this” is a powerful one. Once you name it, you can feel it; and once you feel it, it can release you. I hope you find people with whom it’s safe to experience this normal (if uncomfortable), human feeling, and who will hold you in it. . Onward! . Oh, and, uh, I’m just kind of playing around with bird drawings lately. To be clear, birds don’t make me disappointed, and also, it’s difficult to know what kinds of emotions animals feel. (I think they probably feel amazing, complex “emotions” that are unlike anything we humans can fathom; but it’s impossible to know.) I SORT OF apologize for all this bird content, but not REALLY. 🎬"YOU MAKE THE ENTERTAINMENT INDUSTRY LOOK SO FUN AND EASY" I was told...and that "NOT everyone books like you do" There are definitely a lot of challenges of course... But because I don't feel the "pressure to make it" and I am really just enjoying the process and doing it for fun... it seems easy and fun to me. 🎬I submit and forgot about it... if I don't hear back for an audition, I don't sweat it.. I probably don't have the right look for that role... 🎬I audition and just move on.... if I hear back, great. if I don't, I still had a lot of fun breaking down the script, building that character, keeping my brain working by memorizing the script and practicing the craft. Some might say "Because it's not your passion" .... I say "Because I'm realistic, there is only ONE role🤷" 🎬ABSOLUTELY there is a lot of work that goes into it. 📝hours and hours of script breakdown and memorization for SO MANY roles that you most likely will not even book 🎬hours and hours of self tapes auditions... (let's not even talk about the amount of unnecessary times I have to take a shower and just do my makeup for a self tape 😂😂) 🚗hours and hours of sitting in traffic for in person auditions and to get to sets 🎬hours and hours on sets until that word "action" is called. 🤱as a mom, the many hours I have to dedicate to the craft, I'm not spending that time with my kids (I do most acting related work in the morning...when my oldest son is at school, but still miss hours with my little one ) 👩⚕️I feel blessed that I only work 2 night a week and even with the acting workload, I still have a lot of time available to be with my kids. 🎬However, even being on that ONE set, booking that ONE role, meeting all the amazing artists on that ONE set and the awesome friendships that come out from that ONE set .. make all the work so worth it TO ME. 🎬Acting to me... Is all about enjoying the entire process... Rejection is a huge part of this industry...and I have made a decision to not let it effect me!
Rejection is part of the long term game. Things can’t be rosy all the time, and if it is then may be you are not taking enough risks. Everything that we try to do, jobs we perform, tasks we take on in personal and professional lives, all of them together build the life we have. And, life is a long-term game, not short. Therefore, there will be rejections and there will be successes, and we cannot take either of them very seriously. Our aim is to live, to keep moving, to learn and to have fun alongside with the people we love, to fulfil our responsibilities towards self, family and the society. We will not be always good at it, and that’s ok. Transforming a “blergh” day 🤯 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ To be honest, I had a day like this today. It got to 6pm and I hadn’t left the house. Had done approx 200 steps. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The first step to any sort of change is awareness. Just being aware of how you’re feeling gives you choice.. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I noticed how I felt, and had a choice to stay out staring at my 👩💻 or do something different. I decided to get outside, the work will be there when I return. When I feel rejection from a person or situation, I am learning to remember that whatever has caused me to feel this way may actually have nothing to do with me. My ego tells me that everything is about me, when the reality is not this way. When people are doing the wrong thing on their end, very often they will go on the attack to insult or harm someone else. This is not rejection...this is on them not me. I also know that I cannot call myself a person with empathy and compassion in my heart unless I feel those emotions for those people instead of getting angry at them. I don’t cause anyone’s feelings... I don’t have that power... Your BS is your BS, and mine is mine. It can also be said that rejection doesn’t mean I’m not good enough, it just means someone didn’t see all that I have to offer. I will take a clear rejection over a fake promise any day. Today was a beautiful day in a really simple way. I woke up and headed out to breakfast with two good friends which is always a thing to do on a Saturday. Followed by a movie at the cinema I used to work at called DENDY! I loved that job, for many reasons but am still happy for the day I decided that I wanted more from what I was doing and needed to leave. I then headed into the city to have a coffee and wander... As I was walking through the city by myself I walked past this hotel I remembered having a job interview at to be their events manager. It made me remember how much I wanted that job and the preparation I put in for that interview. It reminded me of when I didn’t get that job how upset I was... Walking by it today made me want to walk in and just have a little peak. Looking back on it I can see how God was in all the details, I’m so glad that I didn’t get that role but how I was still wanting to make sure that I prepared and put effort into making the most of that interview and every interview since then. To think 7-8 years later how happy I am that I got rejected from that position along with a few others! So hey...just a little tip... When going for interviews or stepping into new roles that you are nervous or feel uncomfortable about... You never know where you’ll be in 7-8 years but give it your best shot and rejection is ok! So to all those going into something new or sticking in a role that you really enjoy. Keep it fresh and fun and remind yourself often of why you love what you get to do and always bring your uniqueness into it. And if you are finding that your currently not able to do something you love...each day take little steps towards making that happen! We tend to keep our intimate feelings of our passion, beliefs, hopes, truth, dreams, mostly "Love" secret on the back burner in the hopes that one day we have the courage to tell the person we really care about how we feel, and how they helped change our life. I saw a set of stairs I fell in love with and out of respect, like I would do, we asked what we thought was the owner if we could take a quick photograph in front of it. Instead I got rejected and the reply was "I'm a senior photographer and I'd appreciate it if you didn't, there's some places downtown you can go to".
