Spoiler alert: your protein powder qualifies as a highly processed food. Truth: all protein powders, greens powders, pills, gummies, and other potions are "highly processed". If it requires heat, isolation, hydrolysis, pulverization, or chemical extraction...it's processed. I always recommend whole foods first, whenever possible. Science hasn't even come close to uncovering the synergistic effects of whole foods in our system. Nutrients in isolation are often poorly absorbed...or, in worst cases, can make us sick (think megadosing vitamins that your body doesn't need). But I'll be the first to tell you that I rely on certain things like protein powder and fiber supplements...more often than I'd like to admit. This morning's breakfast was protein oats: 2 scoops chocolate protein powder, 1/2 cup oats, 1/2 cup almond milk, 2 tsp fiber supplement, 5 grams creatine. I coach clients to think whole foods first. But here are a few reasons to have a good protein powder on hand: ● Low appetite. If you struggle to meet your protein target through natural foods because you just aren't hungry, a protein shake is easier to get down and digests faster. ● It's 8 PM and you haven't met your protein target for the day. A protein shake is an easy and low-cal way to fill the gap. ● People trying to eat plant-based. The human body can only extract 40 to 70% of the protein in whole plants. To get enough protein a soy isolate powder is the best option. ● No time. This is 99% of adults, and the main reason I personally rely on protein supplements. I don't have time to cook a full breakfast most mornings, so I'm usually doing some version of overnight protein oats. Hace poco, una de mis clientas hizo un viaje chamánico para preguntarle a sus espíritus ayudantes sobre la creencia de no ser “good enough” (no sentirse “suficientemente buena”). Es una creencia bastante común que se manifiesta de distintas maneras. Sus espíritus ayudantes la llevaron a la cima de una montaña donde la vista estaba completamente tapada por nubes blancas en todas las direcciones. Ella empezó a sentirse ansiosa y la invadió la sensación de que tenía que estar haciendo y “siendo” más todo el tiempo. Le dijeron que esa era la manera en que ella experimentaba esa creencia en su vida: no podía ver todo lo que estaba alrededor de ella y eso la limitaba de disfrutar la “vista”. Le dijeron que se dejara de enfocar en todo lo que no había logrado, y lograra ver todo lo que sí había logrado y todas las bendiciones que sí tenía en su vida. También le dijeron que no solamente tenía un miedo de no ser “good enough” pero también temía a sí ser “good enough” para hacer todo lo que se propone. Porque le dijeron que no solo tiene miedo a fracasar pero tiene miedo a tener éxito. Yo resueno con este mensaje y por eso se los comparto; creo que muchas personas nos sentimos igual. Nos da miedo brillar por diferentes razones. Los dejo con este mensaje textual que le dieron los espíritus ayudantes a mi clienta: “Basas tu futuro en tu pasado y asumes que tus patrones serán los mismos, pero no tienen por qué serlo. Puedes cambiar esto. GOOD ENOUGH JUST AS YOU ARE 💚 At the start of a new week, I thought I’d share some words from a blog post I wrote a while ago. I hope they might feel helpful and serve as a gentle reminder. You are enough. • Press Mute The voice in your head will always be your biggest critic. Make a decision, now, that the noise saying, “You’re not good enough”, is turned to mute. This minute. Doing this, makes listening to our surroundings so much easier. I’ve discovered all kinds of good things about myself without that din. The absence of its blaring tones creates head space to focus on everything you are good at and the wonderful qualities about you that have got you to today. • Worry Less Worrying about how you are perceived by others, whether that be friends or colleagues, is a pastime that’s futile, albeit one in which I’ve invested a lot of time. I’ve learned it achieves nothing and is a major contributor to the not good enough feeling. Being a worrier is tiresome. I know this, but still need regular help to remind me just how tiresome. Excessive worrying removes the fun from life and is a growth factor for the joyless feelings of, “I’m not good enough”. Over the years, I’ve spent so much time worrying about fitting in and being liked, a habit that started as a child and stayed with me throughout much of my adult life. When I eventually get round to writing a letter to my younger self, it’ll definitely begin with, “Do not worry so much”, and will end with, “Do not worry so much”, because my younger self will go on to learn it will make everything else in life so much easier. • Like Your Reflection Take a few moments, every morning when you look in the mirror, to remind yourself that the person looking back is a reflection of you. Treat that reflection with care. Truly, there is only one like it in the world. Finally, remember this: today will come and it will go. Whatever you are facing today, may courage be your partner and may it start and finish with these words of comfort, “Good enough just as I am”. YOU are unique, you ARE loved, you are good ENOUGH already. #MindfulMonday #goodenough #selfkindness #selfcompassion #mondaymotivation #mind

On perfectionism: I went to a painting class with my mom and sister the other night, and I'll be honest: I do NOT like my painting. Five-year-ago me would have thrown it in the trash immediately upon returning home because anything that isn't perfect is trash, right? Five-year-ago me would have felt ashamed that my painting wasn't better than everyone else's in the classroom because if I'm not the best, I'm not worthy, right? Five-year-ago me would decide never to participate in another class because if I'm not perfect, I might as well give up, right? This simple, silly little painting would have created so much shame for that version of me. And how silly would that be to let my lack of practiced skill ruin a fun night? We had dinner together, we painted, we laughed, we sang, we even danced in our seats. It was one of the best evenings I've had in awhile, and five-year-ago me would have let the entire night be ruined, just because my painting isn't perfect. Perfectionism tells us that we have to be perfect in order to be loved. Or so that we won't be judged or ridiculed. It's a conditioned belief, and it just isn't true. No one deserving to be in your life will ever judge you for not being perfect. Five-year-ago me would have hidden this painting from everyone in the class — a class of people with as little practice as me. A class of people who were there for fun, and cared not one bit about anyone's talent. Instead, I showed my flawed painting with pride, and we all, friend and stranger alike, complimented and laughed and enjoyed one another. So, now I'm showing my flawed painting with all of you, because it isn't about the art at all. It's about the memory, the fun, and the fact that I went out and had a great night, and I didn't let perfectionism or anxiety or even my dumb stomach ruin it. Perfectionism is NOT a virtue. Let that shit go.
