THE DUE DATE I have to admit I was a bit disappointed by this one. I felt like there were aspects which really had little impact on the storyline and could have been taken out completely (Izzy & Max). It felt a bit like there was a try-hard element in which it was trying to give you false leads to have something big twist at the end but it just fell a little flat. The ending was a sudden rush job too I feel 🫠 The chapters were quite short and it was dual POV which I like and I think helped me to get through it quite quickly. There was this antique wooden framed mirror at my parent's who had painted it black, as well as the piano and other pieces of furniture, which was a common thing in the 70s. I wanted to get it back to its original nature, good old wood. Here I was, removing the black, when it came to me that the frame had been painted over a gilded layer, itself polished over a crimson layer. So, after removing this palimpseste, I eventually came to spot some wood, somewhat looking more like a patch of skin than chestnut. The more it was unveiled, the more it became obvious the true nature of this not so antique mirror was in fact bakelite. Or some sort of prehistoric plastic. Well, my plans had to be changed, I just could not leave this unexpected prothesis like this, it did look like anything you wouldn't want to hang on a wall. Meh. Lived with this book for a few days & I'm not impressed. I also asked out in a FB group to check if I was being uncharitable. Turns out I'm not on my own. I had a chat with myself about whether a back to basics sewing book was for me but decided to get it because, regardless of where you are on your creative journey, there is always more to learn. Plus, I have every other @britishsewingbee pattern book & am a bit of a completionist! Lol Back to Basics as a pattern book, missed the mark by a country mile. Twist tops, shirred dresses, trench coats and patchwork coats aren't exactly basic wardrobe items. To me anyway? Opinions below! From the title I was expecting actual basic garments, with a few variations to extend the use of the pattern, as a foundation to build your ideal wardrobe. Of the contents, if you bought the previous books, don't buy this one - So many of the patterns have appeared in previous books, but with little alterations to make them different 🙄. I mean, the Mondrian dress from series 4 (I think!) is here, renamed Colour Block Dress, they've disguised it by adding puffed sleeves! Other patterns that have appeared in previous GBSB books include the puff sleeved shirred dress, the maxi dress, the patchwork jacket (extended to coat length), breton top (extended to dress length), a cami & shorts set, a womens casual shirt, a linen blouse upcycled from vintage household linens. I'm pretty sure the jumpsuit and culottes have appeared before but I'm not 100% - of the culotte. They're not traditional culottes "knee length trousers, cut to look like a skirt". They're wide leg trousers & I know wide leg trews have been done before. Do better dudes! I do feel a bit like I've been mugged for £20. I'm a GBSB super fan & I'm very excited for the next series but I have felt it's gone a bit off the boil & lost it's core value. The coziness. The show is edited in such a way to show more of when things go wrong & those daft "comedy" skits - I can't speak for anyone else but I wanna see the sewers & get to know them - I love Esme, Patrick & Kiel but I tune in for the sewing, not presenters & judges 😁 #gbsb #meh #sewingbook #disappointed
