How Big is Your Vision? (by Tim Klink of Prison Discipleship Ministry) Acts 1:8 But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth. When we are children, our vision of life is very small and narrow. Everything revolves around us. As we get older, and begin to mature, our vision begins to encompass others. First are those within our family. We find that our parents not only love us, but they also have struggles in life which we become aware of. As God broadens our awareness of others, our vision begins to move from self to them. God is lovingly preparing our hearts for His vision. As we train for a career, our vision of what that may look like changes many times. My greatest ambition was to finish school and move into the work force. I had a really good job earning $1.75 per hour. Who needs school? Godβs vision included not only finishing high school, but completing many years of post-grad studies. God was equipping me with the tools needed to accomplish His vision, not mine. Just after I graduated from high school, my ambition was to travel, and see the places that my grandparents travelled to. While a time in the Navy met much of that desire, Godβs vision was for me to marry the love of my life that God had prepared just for me, to raise four amazing children, and be the grandpa to eight. God was teaching me the love and struggles within a family to be able to identify with His vision. When I stepped into my first pastorate in the Detroit area, I thought that was where God would have me serve Him for the rest of my life. After all, Detroit does seem large enough to encompass the uttermost parts of the earth. My memories of the people in the church are all good, but I wonder how they ever put up with such a Pastor as me. God was teaching me humility to accomplish His vision, not mine. This Is My Fatherβs World In Baltimore, Maryland, there is a large and unusually beautiful stained glass window that shines colored light into one of the nations most historical churches, the Brown Memorial Presbyterian Church. The window was designed by Louis Comfort Tiffany himself. It honors a man who pastored the church for 13 years. Maltbie Babcock was quite an amazing person. He had a quick and bright intellect which allowed him to excel in his studies. He was an accomplished musician and poet and, as a baseball player, he was gifted with a strong and agile body. As a speaker, he had an exquisite ability with words that made him extraordinarily popular with his congregation and his peers. He soon became known far beyond the walls of his own church. He was, in every sense of the word, a pastorβs pastor. When he lived near Lake Ontario, earlier in his ministry, he would often venture out on long walks up to an overlook where he could see the beautiful scenery, stretching out to the lake. He would tell his wife, βI am going out to see my Fatherβs World.β Tragedy struck young Maltbie on a trip to the holy land. On his return, he contracted Mediterranean Fever. He would not survive. He died in Naples, Italy, in May of 1901. His death, at the age of 42, was a shock to the nation. Reverend Babcock had become something of a national treasure. It wasnβt until after his death that his wife uncovered an unpublished poem in his private papers that would become his lasting legacy. It was a poem describing the long walks he enjoyed in those early years of his life. Once it was set to music, that poem would become one of the most popular hymns ever written. In other words, I may be a mess half the time, but at least by the grace of God, I can always say Iβm still a CHILD OF GOD πππ»ββοΈπ I may not do as well as many of my brothers and sisters, but it is still by His grace and mercy I can even be included in His family at all, and that He would call me βdaughter.β Even if I feel like a failure most of the time, I am still so very blessed that He even glanced my way and chose me. I am what I am: a broken mess, but I know He is always at work within me, sanctifying me each day, and one day I will be made completely wholeβa new creation. I am what I am, and His grace to me was not without effect. Even if Iβm one of the lowly of His servants, at the end of the day it doesnβt matter what I do, but what He does through me and in me. No matter what my life looks like, by my dying day, I will always at least be able to say, that His grace changed me. It was not without effect. He transformed me by His grace, mercy, and kindness. Remember this truth when you face trialsππΎ
Itβs the little foxes that spoil the vine and the ones we need to pay attention to. The little choices and decisions. The little bad habits and ruts. I canβt help but think about Samson when I think of little foxes. Samson was a judge of Israel. He was supposed to be consecrated ( a fancy word for dedicated) to God. Samson had to follow some unique rules: he was never supposed to touch anything dead or drink alcohol, and as a symbol of his great strength, his hair was never to be cut. He did some epic things on the battlefield, but he let his appetites drive him and ended up crossing every boundary set for himβ¦ Famously, he slept with a woman named Delilah, who was a honey pot used by his enemies to destroy him. He let his guard down and told her his secretβthat cutting his hair would make him lose his powerβwhich she told her bosses. With just a few snips he lost his strength and what I think is the saddest verse in the Bible comes next, βhe did not even know that the LORD had left him.β Thatβs part of the story that we focus on, but l see the problem beginning waayyy earlier, when he was cruising through a vineyard (Judges 14:5). What was a guy who isnβt supposed to drink doing in a vineyard?π€ He later saw a beehive in the dead carcass of a lion, and he ate some of the honey. How did he get the honey out? With His hands that were never supposed to touch something dead.π― You see, Samson was playing with fire long before Delilah. By the time he had s3ggs with her and gave away the secret to his strength, he had already desensitized himself with a series of compromises. Most people wreck their lives slowly. Samsonβs story should send chills down your spine. Seeing someone so gifted, so talented, so strong throw it all away for so little should cause us to wake up and straighten up and take very seriously that one degree off course today could lead us to disaster eventually. Comparison is the thief of both gratitude and joy. Do you ever see people with houses that look like they come out of magazines and feel inadequate because you can't get your house to look like that? Or maybe you're trying to be a good wife and submit, but sometimes you make a mistake? Or maybe you work outside the home and you're trying to do well, but someone else gets the raise, not you? It's easy to feel like we just aren't enough, and the truth is, we aren't. None of us are enough. We all need Jesus (including the women with immaculate houses). He is enough. He is everything. Lay your burdens on Him because He cares for you. It's easy to feel burdened by perfectionism. But no one is perfect, including the people who look perfect. Some of those influencers with the perfect houses only show you certain rooms in the house because other rooms are a mess. Others hire help cleaning. The wife who always submits may have gotten there through years of struggle you didn't see. To a certain extent, it is good to look at other people's successes because it can be inspiring. But when the image you see is pure perfection, it can be disheartening for anyone. Remember that you can do all things through Christ who strengthens you, and what you see on social media isn't always real. And when it is real, know that your Father in heaven doesn't expect you to be perfect, but He can help you work toward your goals. So Iβve been pretty open about my mental health struggles lately and I had a come to Jesus talk with myself the other day. Tonight I felt this tug to bust out my youth study Bible from when I was in grade school. I opened it to a study about discouragement and grief. This study pointed me to a verse that I really took a hard look at. βFor I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is going to be revealed to us.β ββRomansβ¬ β8β¬:β18β¬ βCSBβ¬β¬ To sum it up in basic terms in the way I interpreted it: Bad things will happen sometimes; but there are much greater things to come. He has a bigger and better plan for me. It was the reminder I needed and I thought maybe you needed it tooπ€

I went from a queen in my own castle to doing anything the Lord would be willing to let me do in His church. Why would someone do that? Let me tell you. It's not because I was raised this way, because I wasn't. It's not because I read the Bible and thought, "oh this sounds nice." because at first, a lot of the Bible didn't make sense to me. &I didn't start following Jesus because everyone else was doing it! I submitted my life to Jesus because I ran into a giant so big that no doctor, pill, or therapist could conquer. In that process of getting set free, I met the most amazing Man in my life, Jesus Christ. He is the kindest, most gentle, patient, mighty, loving person I've ever laid my eyes on. He's touched my heart and healed me in places I didn't even know was broken. He will do it for you too, just come home. Love you, and I mean it! As a fixer it can be hard for me to let things be. I like to resolve, reconcile, and restore. When things are beyond reconciliation I still crave closure. Completion. A βthe endβ to wrap everything up. There are times in life when youβll hear things that involve you and sayβ¦ βhmmm, thatβs not what happened at all.β Itβs natural to feel a righteous anger, a defensiveness even. Sister, God knows. You may never get that apology. You may never get reconciliation or closure. You may never get to tell your side of the story. As hard as it is, lay it at His feet. Someone reminded me not long ago that Iβll always be the villain in someoneβs story. I desire to be at peace with everyone and that is painful to acknowledge. But itβs true. Itβs beyond your control. Lay it at His feet. He knows. This goes beyond people-pleasing. This is a lesson in surrender and allowing God to soothe your soul when youβve done all you can do. βBe Devoted To One Anotherβ I'm not sure when I first realized it, but one day I suddenly became aware of the fact that I had somehow become a "user" at my church. What do I mean? How is someone a church user? I mean that I was coming to church to get something out of it. Now, thatβs not such a bad thing. We want a church that feeds us and helps us to grow. But, there is more to it than that. I had become a taker instead of a giver. I was coming to church to get what I wanted out, but I wasn't contributing anything for others. I was using my church. I looked around me and saw that there were a few people in my church who did everything. They were keeping the church running. I, on the other hand, wasn't really that important to my church. I was just taking up a seat. It all came together for me when my Youth Pastor spoke these words, "What would your church look like if everyone were as committed as you are?" Wow! My church would close up and go away! I was doing nothing. In fact, I was ultimately a drain on my church's resources! If my church were made up of 200 people like me, my church would fail. That is not how Jesus describes His church. The people in His church are supposed to think more about others than themselves. Romans 12:10-11 "Be devoted to one another in brotherly love; give preference to one another in honor; not lagging behind in diligence, fervent in spirit, serving the Lord." True believers want to do things for others and be like Jesus. They want to make a difference in others and make their communities better places. One time, Jesus looked at Peter and told him that he wouldn't be able to follow Him where He was going. Peter responded by saying: John 13:37 βLord, why can I not follow You right now? I will lay down my life for You.β His life? Peter was willing to do anything for God. Did that describe my approach to following Jesus? No. I was far from that. I have made some major changes since that day. Jesus is my passion and my church is where I serve Him.
