Before I dive into my review, I want to point out that When I’m Dead is the third book in the Black Harbor series. It’s not clearly marketed as such, so it’s worth noting. That said, the story does read as more of a standalone. For example, I haven’t read the first two books in the series (though I will now), and other than not knowing the other “bad events” of the area, I was able to follow along without issue. When I’m Dead is split into two primary perspectives, Rowan and Axel. Through their eyes, we see two very different reactions to the same circumstance: a missing girl (their daughter). It was heartbreaking and fascinating. But there’s so much more than that, as once is a medical examiner and the other is a police officer. You can see how much nuance that adds to the story. Overall, I must say that When I’m Dead is a tense read. It’ll keep you on the edge of your seat, even while you stop and question the actions of these parents. Chain-Gang All-Stars ist eines meiner favourite Bücher die ich dieses Jahr gelesen hab. Aus irgendeinem Grund sehe ich es Häufig vermarktet als "ähnlich wie The Hunger Games (Tribute von Panem)". Und da The Hunger Games auch eine meiner favourite Buchreihen ist möchte ich diesem claim hier offiziell widersprechen. Die einzige Gemeinsamkeit die ich finden kann ist, dass beide mit Kämpfen in einer Arena zu tun haben. Und selbst diese Arena-Kämpfe sind vollkommen unterschiedlich strukturiert & haben einen komplett verschiedenen Sinn. Hunger Games ist eine YA Reihe, während Chain-Gang All-Stars ein Buch für Erwachsene ist. Das heißt natürlich nicht zwingend, dass man sie nicht vergleichen kann. Jedoch ist Chain-Gang All-Stars deutlich brutaler, und mehr Fokus auf tatsächliche Kämpfe (man vergisst wie wenig der Hunger Games Reihe tatsächlich in den Arenen stattgefunden hat). Auch das social commentary der beiden Bücher hat einen verschiedenen Fokus und wird komplett anders angegangen. Mit welchen Vergleich ich allerdings agree, ist das Chain-Gang All-Stars für Fans von der Locked Tomb Reihe, meiner all time favourite Reihe, ist. Beide Bücher scratchen den selben itch in meinem Gehirn. Beide haben einen Schreibstil auf den man sich einlassen muss aber der perfekt für mich ist. (Beide sind spahhic, I guess, aber die Beziehungen sind sehr verschieden.) Beide Bücher beschäftigen sich mit starken Frauen mit Waffen (Sword Wife). Und vor allem, beide Bücher haben dieses durchgängige Motiv der Liebe, wie man liebt und geliebt wird, das sich immer tief in meine Seele gräbt. Anyway, der schlimmste Vergleich den ich je gesehen hab war der von Babel und Harry Potter lololol. Was ist der unpassenste Bücher-Vergleich den ihr jemals gesehen habt? 👀

"ON THIN ICE" by @authorhaydenhall 🧑🏻🏒🧑🏼🏞️🏡 This series keeps getting better and this book was extremely beautiful and emotional. It was a bit different to the previous ones in the series, but I loved it nonetheless. 📚 Asher and Jordan became step brothers when they were teenagers. Asher's mom married Jordan's dad and they started a new life all together under the same roof. 📚 Asher fell in love with Jordan from the first moment he saw him and he spent years crushing on his stepbrother to the point that he even started playing ice hockey. Asher and Jordan eventually end up playing for the same team at university and they despise each other, until one summer things change radically 😃 📚 I don't even know where to start as this was a lot more emotional than I anticipated. The hatred they had for each other was only a way to disguise their pining. Oh my god, the pining was palpable and their feelings were very obvious, although not to each other 🙄 📚 Jordan was responsible, mature and stoic, but also caring and possessive. Once he found out about Asher's feelings there was no stopping him. As for Asher, it truly broke my heart to see how many years he'd spent loving someone that was so close yet so far. His feelings stayed strong and never diminished. When they finally got together it was hot and steamy, but sweet and tender too. That was true love ❤️ 📚 I disliked Asher's mom, she was selfish and self-centered. I never thought, not even once throughout the book, of Asher and Jordan as brothers as she insisted. She wanted to have a family that it had never actually existed. Jordan's father, on the other hand, was a great man. 📚 This novel was touching and beautiful because their love for each other felt eternal and inevitable, like they had been born to be together. It was such a lovely story that moved me so much.

Would you believe someone's story if it kept changing? I can't put into words how much I enjoyed this book. Each page kept me reguessing every suspect and had me on the edge of my seat. It's impossible to put down. If it wasn't for work, I would have read this in one sitting. A gripping novel that had my heart breaking for some of the characters. While some characters had my heart racing in anger. Holly Jackson knows how to grip the reader and keep the story engaging. 📚 #BookReview - #TheMurderAtTheVicarage by @officialagathachristie #ReadChristie2024 - April Selection (1930s) April’s Read Christie selection kicks off the next decade, with 1930s THE MURDER AT THE VICARAGE, the first of the Marple novels. This book really is a fine example of Christie’s plotting prowess, as it’s a beautifully layered and intricate mystery with a wonderfully logical conclusion. Along the way, almost everyone becomes a suspect and it’s a fantastic example of literary misdirection and surprising plot twists (before they were the backbone of crime fiction marketing!). I throughly enjoyed trying to follow along with the suspicions and attempt to form my own theories. As always, Christie expertly veils the truth, so that the final revelation comes as a surprise and yet feels so blindingly obvious. This is a very neat mystery, which ties up all the loose ends that have come unravelled along the way. It’s resplendent with suspects - virtually everyone has something against victim, Protheroe - which allows for so many potential motives. One thing that has surprised me with the Marple mysteries I’ve read so far, is how little she appears in the novel. This is no different, as the story is told from the perspective of the local vicar, Clement. As such a key character, I always expect Marple to be more prominent. Having said that, what this does mean, is that her appearances are noteworthy and it’s clear that nobody can match her intellect or intuition in St. Mary Mead! Telling the story from the Vicar’s perspective does allow for a lot of wit to be interspersed between the mystery. Clement is a very humorous character and I enjoyed his observations and some of his slightly unchristian remarks. This blend of wit and mystery makes THE MURDER AT THE VICARAGE just as readable and enjoyable today as it was upon release in 1930!

Bonjour Booksta 🫶🏼 Je vous partage aujourd’hui une saga que j’ai beaucoup apprécié ! « Le petit monde de la passe-miroir » de Christelle Dabos qui suit de près les aventures d’Ophélie et Thorn, un couple très mal associé au premier abord mais qui va parfaitement bien ensemble au final. __ 4/5 ⭐️ J’ai apprécié chaque instant passé dans cette histoire, on y découvre de nombreuses choses très intéressantes dans un vaste monde avec ses codes complexes qui ne nous sont pas familiers. Entre illusions et réalités. Les personnages sont attachants bien que bruts, j’ai eu un coup de cœur pour Thorn quand même (et j’avoue avoir détesté Farouk dès le départ haha). La romance n’est clairement pas au premier plan dans l’histoire, elle est presque facultative : ce n’est pas si gênant mais je préférais le préciser ! Comme mentionné dans mon avis sur la publication, j’ai par contre eu énormément de mal avec la fin. Sachant qu’il n’y aura pas de suite, c’est d’autant plus frustrant. C’est difficile d’interpréter ce que cela signifie réellement. Néanmoins, cela ne change pas la qualité de cette œuvre et le plaisir que j’ai pris à la dévorer. War on mainland Europe has broken out and Gibraltarians are being evacuated, first to Morocco and then to London where Rose, her mother and other members of the community are given lodging in a hotel. The sense of London during the war years is vibrantly brought to life in the careful and thoughtful hands of this author. Rose's heritage means that she is not a shoe-in into London life, even though she is a dual national; much of the story is centred around her finding her place and skills, and understanding the 'new' culture in which she finds herself. She is a quiet and unassuming person, who is naturally drawn to books - she finds access to novels to while away the hours, especially in the bomb shelters. Once her circumstances change, she heads for a job based in Oxfordshire, where she is to work as a secretary to Major Inchbold, an archly plain speaking man who is without his sight. Here she continues to learn more about English society and how she can assimilate and grow as a young woman. This is a rich and slow-paced novel that takes its time to explore the character of Rose in her context of time and place. This book is meant to be a murder mystery set around a televised baking show however, there isn’t actually any sign of the murder until about page 220 of 300. 🍰 The book has many different POVs but I found it quite easy to follow. You learn more about the bakers back stories but there’s only really one backstory that is relevant to the book. The book also has lots of short chapters so it feels like you really make progress through the book quickly but also nothing really happens. You read all these chapters but the plot doesn’t seem to move. 🍰 To me, it felt like the book should have been written in reverse. There’s basically no suspense because the murder happens so late on and is basically immediately solved by the police. By the time the ‘twist’ was revealed, I basically didn’t care anymore and just wanted to finish the book. Der Titel alleine hat mich schon neugierig gemacht (ich hab eine kleine Schwäche für ungewöhnliche Titel 😉) und es fühlte sich die ganze Zeit an wie eine warme Kuscheldecke an einem kalten Tag! Es ist eine relativ ruhige Geschichte, die einen dennoch sofort packt und mitreißt. Ich hab mich im Nowhere House sofort wie zu Hause gefühlt, mit all den witzig verrückten Charakteren, die man einfach ins Herz schließen MUSS und der zarten Liebesgeschichte zwischen Mika und Jamie ❤ Und auch wenn das Buch leicht und fröhlich zu lesen ist, hat es doch überraschend viel Tiefgang und einige überraschende Wendungen. Mich hat sie von der Atmosphäre her auch ein wenig an T. J. Klune’s „Mr. Parnassus Heim für magisch Begabte“ erinnert, was ich auch sehr geliebt habe! Book review of «Knot Her Shot» by Ari Wright:⠀ It has been months since I have written a full book review as I’m fully immersed in my upcoming wedding preparations. Therefore, I intentionally chose not to take ARCs, except for this one that caught my eye. I really enjoyed reading it.⠀ ⠀ Hockey? Billionaires? And Omegaverse? It instantly made me apply for this ARC.⠀ ⠀ Remi is a very lonely omega with no family at all. The only friend still with her is Meg, who has recently found a pack of her own. Remi works as a barista and also longs to find a family that would accept her for who she is. Remi gets a potential high % match from a scenting company with a pack, and what a surprise it is for her when she understands that she has known these people for some time now but never noticed them in a relationship sense before.⠀ ⠀ The MMC were totally awesome:⠀ ⠀ Smith: I hated him for half the book as he was doing some very dubious stuff. However, by the end of the book, he decided to change himself for the better, to be a better version of himself for Remi. There were many adorable scenes with him after all.⠀ ⠀ Cassian: The second chance relationship was totally worth it in the end. He was protective and caring of FMC, showing her that he is worth being given a second chance.⠀ ⠀ Damon: He was the sweetest and the most protective of them all. He was team Remi from day one he met her and never regretted any decisions.⠀ ⠀ I totally liked the style of writing and the characters. “The Indifferent Stars Above,” by Daniel James Brown. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5 •••••••••• April certainly has been a good month for reading for me! This was one of the first books I purchased when I went to America last year (shout out to Barnes and Nobles in Honolulu!) and glad I found this book. I first found out about this book and the harrowing story of the Donner Party through my favourite podcast, Last Podcast on the Left, where they did a three part series on the Donner Party, and they used this book for a lot of their research and a primary source. In April 1846, Sarah Graves and a group of pioneers set off for a better life west to California from Illinois. As soon as they reach the Nevada mountains, heavy snow sets in and makes the journey incredibly hard to continue. Weeks go by and the Donner party are cold and desperate, and soon resort to the unthinkable to survive… As brutal and gut wrenching as this book can be, Brown creates an atmosphere for his readers so we understand how dangerous and difficult this journey would have been in 1846. The level of detail and description Brown goes into regarding every step of the Donner Party journey makes you feel like you’re there with them. This is such a well documented book and definitely one of the most memorable nonfiction works I’ve read in a while. Whilst this book may not be uplifting and bleak at times, if you are interested in American history or pioneer life, I would highly recommend this book. Maybe check the trigger warnings before reading, but this is very much a book I could not put down. The Other Boleyn Girl by Philippa Gregory Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Honestly, I enjoyed this so so much. I think as long as you remember this isn’t a word for word biographical account, it’s a really fun read with good pacing, loads of drama and brings the characters from the (in?)famous Henry viii’s court to life. I’m really into the Tudor’s atm and it felt natural to look into this kinda book alongside the fantasy books I read. I have a few more to read because I have enjoyed this one so much and I’m keen to get stuck in. [2024] 10/35 - NHẮT STUART Khi đọc câu chuyện này, mình nhớ đến mấy chuyện cổ tích hồi bé mình đọc như Cô bé tí hon, Chú bé tí hon – những câu chuyện đó sẽ có phép màu từ bà tiên còn ở cuốn sách này Nhắt Stuart đã tự nó làm nên điều phi thường. Chấp nhận, nhắt Stuart sinh ra là một con chuột nhưng bố mẹ và anh trai George vẫn yêu thương cậu hết mực. Bằng chứng là khi cậu bị mắc kẹt, người anh vẫn cố gắng tìm cách để cứu cậu (mặc dù có nhưng không đáng kể vì bản tính ham chơi hay quên) nhưng vẫn là một người tốt. Mình có xem phim về chú chuột Stuart thì đã thay đổi hình ảnh về người anh. Dù nhắt Stuart trong cuốn sách này mình cảm nhận được yêu thương và quan tâm hơn cả nhưng chẳng vì thế mà người anh trong câu chuyện có chút ghen tị. 🇹🇭🇹🇭🇹🇭 I was lucky enough to get to spend a significant chunk of the last month in Thailand, so naturally this is reflected in my reading! One of my favourite ways to learn more about a place that I’m visiting is to pick out some iconic literature from that country in advance and load up my kindle so I’ve got plenty of local stories to keep me entertained on holiday. Four Reigns was the first of my Thai reads and this sweeping historical epic was a perfect companion as I spent my days wandering through Bangkok’s royal palace and strolling along the Chao Phraya river. It tells the story of a woman named Phloi, beginning with her entering into service in the palace’s Inner Court in the 1890s and concluding with her death in the 1940s after witnessing a total transformation of her homeland. The Inner Court is a world apart, made up of the wives and daughter of King Chulalongkorn as well as the women who serve them and through Phloi’s eyes the reader is granted a glimpse of this unique world. When I heard this was the ‘national novel’ of Thailand, I was intrigued but honestly braced for it to be a little dry. Imagine my delight when Four Reigns turned out to be a warm, funny and intimate account of one woman’s life and loves and by the end of the novel Phloi and her family feel like dear old friends. Much more Austen than Tolstoy if you get my drift. The view we are granted of the royal family and the Thai aristocracy is somewhat rose-tinted but this is only to be expected given this was serialised in a national newspaper and the author went on to become Prime Minister of Thailand! In Defence of the Act by Effie Black 💊 Sharply witty 💊 Conversational first person narrator 💊 Suicide, abuse and disordered eating This book was magic. I still don’t know how the author did it but they managed to write a book about the most difficult topics (yes, plural) without passing on the emotional cost to the reader. Every chapter of this book touches on some kind of trauma but somehow, the narrator puts you so much at ease, you’re not left emotionally drained after reading. Yes, it was touching and made me cry at the end but it wasn’t heavy throughout. There was light and shade. I can’t review this book and not mention the font. At first glance it’s vile but in practice I found it really easy to read. I was hoping the publisher would include a section about why they’d used it in the back but they didn’t unfortunately so this unusual choice remains a mystery. I’m gutted this didn’t make the Women’s Prize short list; it was my top read of the long list. Tasty enough to capture a lady's heart!! I got my hands on the One Piece Cookbook back in February I guess I was so excited so let me write a quick review about the book Book I love that it has hard cover it really feels like a quality cookbook And I actually vibe with the fonts (typefaces?) as well, I think they actually make a good pairing with the arts inside, even tho there are many typos in it sadly Illustrations Basically it's a Sanji artbook haha He's on almost every page along with a tip or a silly cute note hehe And it does look like an artbook cuz every page is full with pictures which I don't mind at all And since they forcused on the manga rather than the anime, it only has art from the manga which artstyle I love sm Ahahah sadly some of the arts are so badly cut out or low quality I am so sad about it aaaaa. I'm not saying I could have done it better since I am not that good in photoshop..yet! But still aaa Plus every meal has a 'manga moment' part where they write down the exact chapter where that meal appeared. And I find it actually useful The photos about the meals are beautiful too, they make me feel loke I can easily make that food too haha...which is the whole point of the book Meals The concept of the book is that even begginer cooks could creat amazing and tasty meals too Yes, they all look delicious Most of the meals contain some foreign ingredients and they even have a note on this on the first page of the book that we can switch those to something we have in our 'world' (country). My Opinion Of course the title of this book is a spoiler, but knowing that Tilda was going to do something selfless instantly made me connect with her. However Milo was a character that I struggled with at first - it was very easy to see why Tilda was so cautious around him when we first meet him but he very quickly grew on me. Samantha Tonge is one of those authors that I will always read - whilst vastly different each book is always enjoyable. For me Tonge writes in such a lovely way that I am instantly hooked on the story. I struggled with the first chapter of this book - there was a lot going on around me so I put the book down. As soon as I was in a quieter environment I restarted the book and I am so glad that I did, I had missed a lot the first time around. This was one of those books that I wanted to read in one sitting but unfortunately I had plans that couldn't be changed. Jamais du genre à trop s’attarder (ou à attendre grand-chose d’un homme), Aurora s’éclipse avant même que Russ ait l’occasion de lui demander son nom complet. Quelle n’est pas leur surprise de se croiser dès le premier jour du camp d’été où ils sont tous deux moniteurs, alors qu’ils cherchent à fuir leurs vies familiales compliquées. Russ espère que s’éloigner suffisamment de Maple Hills lui permette d’éviter de gérer les conséquences de l’addiction au jeu de son père, tandis qu’Aurora, lassée de constamment chercher l’attention des autres, aspire à retrouver un endroit où elle se sent vraiment à sa place. Russ sait que s’il enfreint la règle stricte du camp interdisant toute relation entre le personnel, il pourrait être renvoyé à Maple Hills avant la fin de l’été. Mais malheureusement pour lui, Aurora n’a jamais vraiment pris les règles au sérieux… Avis : J’étais vraiment ravie de retrouver l’ambiance de Maple Hills. J’apprécie la manière dont Hannah GRACE développe ses romances, offrant une fois de plus une relation saine et émouvante à découvrir. Les deux protagonistes m’ont profondément touché, malgré leurs cicatrices, ils s’efforcent de les surmonter pour se comprendre. Les moments partagés entre les membres du personnel du camp m’ont vraiment amusé, me donnant simplement l’envie de rejoindre leur groupe. J’aurais souhaité que l’intrigue globale soit plus riche, ce livre se concentre principalement sur l’aspect romance. Mais ça ne m’a pas empêché d’apprécier ma lecture. The Bookaholics’ Insight The Lost Apothecary by Sarah Penner Reviewed by @theglowingcorner_ A story that unfolds in two different timelines n eras & how their paths cross. Very interesting read & a lot of strong women characters of different ages, & even stronger spirits. And how wonderful researching history can be if one is inclined towards it . I loved the way the author kept oscillating between the two different timelines & kept the story connected. As I read the book I kept visualising it all that is the USP of the author that she can bring alive the story & it was really interesting right up to the very end.
